    What if I told you, you’ve been routing your effects entirely wrong? That’s right. It’s all… wrong. And no, I’m not talking about putting the delay and reverb in front of the amp. I’m talking about how we route modulation and time based effects to the output of the quad cortex. So how did I come across this realization? Well, I randomly got into wet dry wet rig setups this past week. Which for those of you that don’t know is a way of routing your guitar so that you can have deeper modulation and delay and reverb without losing the clarity of what you’re playing. Basically your guitar gets split so all the drives and what not hit the amp and go out. That’s your dry. Then your signal is split at the amp and goes through a separate chain with all of your chorus, delay, verb, etc and comes out a different set of speakers. That’s your wet. It sounds really cool. Very studio like.
    So let’s start here: this is how I’ve been routing my guitar effects: drives stereo amps chorus delay verbs out to the house. I think it sounds awesome. It’s very spacious and stereo. But since I’m so hell bent on making the Quad Cortex sound as good as possible, I thought there has to be a way to apply this wet/dry/wet thing to the quad cortex. I did some research and read an article by line 6 and figured the principles would apply... Now watch this. I’m going to take the exact same setting but I’m going split the delay and verbs. So rather than having the delay go into the reverb, I’m going to have the delay be on its own lane, and the reverb be on its own lane. So both effects are still on and coming out the same output, but they are isolated from each other. Kind of like using a send in mixing in a DAW.
    Pretty cool right? We now have more clarity on the main guitar sound, and I would say the delay tails are also clearer. But let’s take this one step further. We’re going to lose our stereo amp setup in favor of one amp so that we can use lane 2 as a separated send for modulation effects. So now we have all of our modulation, delay, and reverb hitting the output separately.
    To me, I liked the sound of just having the delay and reverb separated. It gives a lot more clarity to the guitar, and more clarity to our delay. That feels like the sweet spot to me. Also cool, which you can do in either of the last two configurations, but you can really crank the delay and verb without losing the sound of what you’re playing.
    It’s kind of a top notch hack for anyone trying to get a super vibey worship, ambient, pop, or whatever tone. Let me know your favorite routings in the comments, and be sure to drop a like on the video. And of course, subscribe to the channel for more videos on guitar, and the quad cortex.

    The correct term for that is running Delay and Reverbs "in parallel" as opposed to 'in series', and yes, it makes a world of difference, like you have experienced here. Great video

    In this example i actually prefer when the wet FX weren't isolated.. for the part you're playing it sounded really cool and more atmospheric when the guitar is lost in the reverb & delays a bit more. When isolating the FX it does sound cleaner but idk, took the soul out of that part a bit for me.
    Interesting points tho something definitely for me to consider on my patches! I currently run 2 guitars through the QC for my band which use up all the lanes... so i don't really have the luxury of isolating my FX just yet

    • @JustinMuncy
      @JustinMuncy  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah it’s a taste thing for sure!! Also depends on what’s going on with the rest of the music at the moment. There’s advantages to both for sure!
      If you do ever experiment on your own, the cool thing with isolating fx is you can actually run them hotter without losing your guitar, so if you were taking an epic solo or something a little more notey, you could still run a super wet signal without it turning into mush-

    • @xnewman96x
      @xnewman96x ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@JustinMuncy I agree, isolating the FX will make the part sit better in a busier mix. There's a reason why every producer does things this way to maintain the clarity in the original sound. Cool to see that it can be applied here too... so do you turn the mix up to 100% on the FX and then use the multi-output volume to get your desired blend with the guitar ?

    • @JustinMuncy
      @JustinMuncy  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@xnewman96x you definitely could do it that way. I just kinda turn the mix knobs on the fx until it sounds good and roll with that haha!

    So do you have to use three channels on the FOH board? And if so what inputs do you run out of

    • @JustinMuncy
      @JustinMuncy  ปีที่แล้ว

      Nope! If it was a true wet/dry/wet you would need three. But this is just using some of the ideology behind that, but for a stereo rig, so you only need the normal two outputs.
      I just set the outputs to multi output so I don’t have to think about it. Live I plug in two XLRs, at home, I usually do two TRS cables.

  • @raymondforbes4295
    @raymondforbes4295 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Considering the new update is going to have stereo IRs and stereo cabs, would you just use that or still use two different amp/cab blocks?

    • @JustinMuncy
      @JustinMuncy  ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the cabs are already stereo aren’t they? They have a left and right out… that’s why I’m panning each cabinet hard left and hard right. True stereo is the sound of one amp going down the left and one amp going down the right. I’m actually using a different amp and cab combo for each channel. That’s why I do it that way but it’s all preference~

  • @jaykemper

    When you rerouted, did you turn the mix to no-dry on the reverb and delay?

    • @JustinMuncy
      @JustinMuncy  ปีที่แล้ว

      No, so if this were a true wet dry wet rig, you would want to do what you’re saying. This is just a modified stereo rig, so killing the dry entirely wouldn’t work. You would need another splitter on that top line to get the stereo guitar signal sent to both line 3 and the output. Which doesn’t seem possible from my experimentation. Like the third option, you could probably accomplish that with one amp, and instead of using the second line for modulation, you could make that your dry, and then run all wet fx on the bottom two lines.
      The way I have it set, my line 1 of FX runs into row three. It hits the modulation, then row three splits to two lines, one is the delay line, and one is the reverb.

    My choice goes for isolated 1. But it's only because of the sound of the amp I guess.
    In the last one, the sound is less bright, not as full as in isolated 1, in my opinion :)

      Pretty interesting how the routing changes the character of amp right?? The only difference between the three examples is the routing. All the settings stayed the same.
