  • Purgatory is a state of purification before heaven. But what exactly goes on there? We can't know every detail about it in this life, but the Bible does give us clues.

Tim Staples is a Senior Apologist here at Catholic Answers, but he was not always Catholic. Tim was raised a Southern Baptist. Although he fell away from the faith of his childhood, Tim came back to faith in Christ during his late teen years through the witness of Christian televangelists. Soon after, Tim joined the Marine Corps.
During his four-year tour, he became involved in ministry with various Assemblies of God communities. Immediately after his tour of duty, Tim enrolled in Jimmy Swaggart Bible College and became a youth minister in an Assembly of God community. During his final year in the Marines, however, Tim met a Marine who really knew his faith and challenged Tim to study Catholicism from Catholic and historical sources. That encounter sparked a two-year search for the truth. Tim was determined to prove Catholicism wrong, but he ended up studying his way to the last place he thought he would ever end up: the Catholic Church!
He converted to Catholicism in 1988 and spent the following six years in formation for the priesthood, earning a degree in philosophy from St. Charles Borromeo Seminary in Overbrook, Pennsylvania. He then studied theology on a graduate level at Mount St. Mary’s Seminary in Emmitsburg, Maryland, for two years. Realizing that his calling was not to the priesthood, Tim left the seminary in 1994 and has been working in Catholic apologetics and evangelization ever since.

the word of God can be understood, there is nothing mistical about it,,,,, man sinned against God, and was separated from Him, but God in His infinite love and foreknowledge provided a way of reconciliation thru His only begotten Son Jesus Christ, who was born of Mary from God thru The Holy Spirit, He was born without sin, lived a perfect sinless life living under the law, was crusifyed for our sins on our behalf, " He hung on that Roman cross to pay for sins He did not owe, because we owed sins we could not pay.

Implies that something needs to be written in the Bible in order to be true.
But if the canon of scripture isn’t even written in the Bible; then “something needs to be written in the Bible to be true” cannot logically be true.

The Word of God says in 1st Corinthians chapter 15:
Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you THE GOSPEL which I preached to you, which also you received, and in which you stand; by which since then YOU HAVE BEEN SAVED, if then you kept in memory what I preached to you-unless you had believed in vain. For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: ✝️How that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that He was buried, and that He rose again on the third day according to the Scriptures.✝️ (1 Corinthians 15:1-4)
"But there's more..." NO THERE IS NOT!
THAT is The Gospel: Christ died for your sins, He was buried for your sins, and He rose again on the third in according to the Scriptures.
And anytime you add ANYTHING to what Christ did, you're literally taking away from what Christ did.
Jesus' last words on the Cross were, "It is FINISHED"!!! (John 19:30) The work is done.

The good news of the gospel is to say you have nothing to fear in death. Purgatory robs you of that. In 1 Corinthians 15, Paul speaks fo the fonal generation, of those alive at the second coming of Christ. It says we shall be changed in an instant, in the twinkling of an eye. If God can do that, the resurrection of the body, in an instant, He can surely do the final cleansing of the soul in an instant.

Maybe what we consider purgatory is what we are living now in this earthly life, with its challenges and choices to become closer to God. Many other faiths also have this understanding in thier theory of reincarnation. Just my thoughts.

It seems like the RCC gives more credit to Dante, the one that made famous the concept of purgatory in the 14th century, which I find odd since they put faith in early fathers. Jacques Le Goff dates the term purgatorium to around 1170. Paul is definitely of a different opinion.
I am hard pressed between the two. My desire is to depart and be with Christ, for that is far better. But to remain in the flesh is more necessary on your account.

    And what of Jesus?
“There was a rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day. And at his gate was laid a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, who desired to be fed with what fell from the rich man’s table. Moreover, even the dogs came and licked his sores.

@@smeatonlighthouse4384 I had another opportunity to contemplate on the matter of purgatory.
Hebrews 10:22 let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. In Luke 16:19-31, Lazarus prepped himself and was ready to go, of course after AD. The rich man "wanted" and "pleaded" but did not repent. The rich man's family could have listened and adhere to Moses' message, but now the message of Jesus but did or would not. If the family did listen, they could have prayed for themselves and family. Those prayers could have helped the rich man to encourage reconciliation and repentance. Individuals may have enough good but still have false pride, arrogance, stubbornness which need to be purged. In purgatory they may have a chance. At Fatima, Mary Mother of Jesus, informed Lucia that people or individuals could and should pray for the dead. The Catholic Church has a process called indulgence where one could perform an act which could be applied to the dead, CCC 1471. To best be Heard one must be in a righteousness state of body, mind, and spirit. Sin is inevitable but thank God for Jesus Who takes away sin.

And of course when Lazarus came back he never spoke of being anywhere. So right there Jesus backed up Ecclesiastes in the Bible when he said it is though you're asleep in death. Nowhere in the Bible does it promote when you die you're setting somewhere waiting. Where does that teaching come from? My Protestant mind REALLY recoils at this…I’m making progress, but I’m not there yet. I’ve also been wondering if a person would need to be born again “again” after mortal sin…Can a person be “born again” repeatedly in this life? That would seem ridiculous.

Your mind recoils because of your protestant background.
However, you are on the right track. Don’t take my word for it though, keep asking questions and looking for materials that help in addressing those questions.
I should also add that this video (in my opinion) didn’t do so well in addressing the question, though this channel is great. They have other videos on purgatory that are much better than this one. So during your quest, there might be some people or materials that might not necessarily hit the mark in addressing your questions. So make sure you are inquiring from various sources.
As a recent Catholic who was formerly Protestant, i went through a similar process.

Catholics believe in Purgatory their man made "halfway house" because Jesus Christ's death and resurrection wasn't quite enough. It was OK but we need Mary and the Catholic saints to finish the job. The RCC also conveniently took out the 2nd commandment about worshipping idols IE: graven images. Roman Catholicism, especially the Vatican is overflowing with statues.

The good news of the gospel is to say you have nothing to fear in death. Purgatory robs you of that.
