The words of the criminals hanging on the cross next to Jesus - "If You are the Christ, save Yourself and us." The other rebuked him, saying, ..."We receive the due reward of our deeds; but this Man has done nothing wrong." Then he said to
Jesus, "Lord, remember me when You come into Your kingdom. And Jesus said to him, "Assuredly, I say to you, today

It’s important to read the scriptures. In 1 Corinthians 3, it is not the person that is being put through the fire, but each persons “work” that is tested.
1 Corinthians 3:11 “For no one can lay any other foundation than the one we already have - Jesus Christ. Know anyone who builds on that foundation May use gold, silver, jewels, wood, hey or straw. But there is going to come a time of testing at the judgment day to see what kind of work each builder has done. Everyone’s work will be put through the fire to see weather or not it keeps its value. If the work survived the fire, that builder will receive a reward. But if the work is burned up, the builder we will suffer great loss. The builders themselves will be saved, but like someone escaping through a wall of flames.”
We must be very careful of false doctrine especially now during these times of deception in many of the churches. God bless you, sharing the truth in love.

Scripture refers God as refiner's fire and fuller's soap (Malachi 3:2). There must be reason why Scripture says so - both have something to do with refining and cleansing. Zech 13:8-9 says that God will put some, NOT their works, into fire as one refines silver and test gold.
The main reason why you have problem with purgatory is because you follow the teaching of the Reformers of double imputation: Through faith alone you will receive Christ's righteousness imputed on or credited to you while your sins, past and future, are imputed on or credited to Christ, who bore them on the cross. When you are taught that your past and future sins are credited to Christ who bore them on the cross, then purgatory will make what Christ did insufficient. But is double imputation scriptural? Ezekiel 18:20 says "the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon himself and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon himself". Both righteousness and wickedness are not transferrable!

You can't separate work from the person doing it. As this Sctmripture states, we receive recompense for the evil we do. That means punishment. It's the wood, straw, hay of our life getting burned up.
      2 Corinthians 5:10
For all of us must appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each may receive recompense for what has been done in the body, whether good or evil.

But in the footnotes concerning this scripture it is said "This is not a direct reference to purgatory but several Doctors of the Church have used this as a basis for that doctrine."

I think it was Dr. Brant Pitre who brings up the parable in Luke 12:43-48. In this set of parables Jesus is explaining what dying and judgement will be like. This particular parable talks of the faithful going to Heaven (put in charge of all possessions), the unfaithful servant being cast out (hell) with the unfaithful; then there is the category of those not deserving either, but will receive punishment (some severe, some light); but not cast out into the eternal darkness. Seems like a spot on description of purgatory to me.

@@Luke--rx6oj There are many layers to every parable. The gest of this one is the Master goes away for a long time leaving the servants to run the house. I would agree that while the Master is away, that time period represents either our life individually, or the time period between the Ascension of Jesus and His Second Coming, or both. When the Master returns, sees what the servants have done and judges them, would then represent our individual death where we go to meet Jesus at our immediate judgement, or it could also be the moment of His Second Coming when we are all judged together at the General Judgement (Final Judgement). Either interpretation will still give you Purgatory if you look at the fate of the last two servants who get either a heavy or light beating, but that is it.
No sin is to enter heaven. If death was some sort of magic door that suddenly makes all of us Saints (perfected); then it would be cruel of God to leave us on Earth suffering when He could just snap His finger, kill us and we could enter heaven. The process of Purgation begins the moment we become Christian and pick up our Cross and follow Jesus. If that process is not finished by the time of our deaths, then the purgation continues but it is ramped up tremendously; which is why many of the saints who have been shown visions of purgatory say we need to get as much done here as possible as the pain of it is much less to accomplish the same thing.
Purgatory is not a second chance. It is just the final stage for those who are in friendship with Christ but still have Earthly attachments especially to sin. I think we al know a few people like that including ourselves.

Better yet, what did the early Church say about this? Also, ever wonder why the Church is an article of faith in the creed? Interesting that it's not just an invisible and non-specific group who can do whatever they want based on how they decide to interpret the Bible. How can 1 Tim 3:15 be true if there are so many thousands of "Bible believing" churches out there? It is an absolute contradiction.

We can always pray for the dead because it is an act of love. Christians have been doing it for over 2,000 years and the Jewish people well before that. The New Testament also tells us that the apostle Paul prayed for the dead. After praying for the household of a man named Onesiphorus, Paul goes on to pray “may the Lord grant him to find mercy from the Lord on that Day” (2 Tim. 1:18). Paul twice mentions “the household of Onesiphorus” (2 Tim. 1:16, 4:19), but does not greet him with the rest of his household and speaks of him only in the past tense. We don't have to concern ourselves about what state their soul is in when someone dies - we can just love them and this is done through prayer. Hope this helps?

When we die, we die in a state of sin, an inclination to sin.
When we enter heaven, we are 100% righteous as NOTHING unclean shall enter heaven (Rev 21).
So there is a process, between our death and heaven were we BECOME clean. No desire for sin whatsoever. Catholics have a word for this process. Protestants never give the process a thought.

      Quick recap
      - the passage above is teaching a spiritual lesson of life after death
      - those in hell can not be saved
      - those in heaven can not suffer loss
      - the spiritual fire is the cleansing of the soul as _nothing unclean can enter heaven
      - all those in heaven are 100% righteous with no inclination to sin.
A portion of St Thomas Aquinas and his commentary on this passage:
_164. - Secondly, he shows the means by which it will be disclosed, namely, by fire; hence he continues: because it shall be revealed with fire, namely, the day of the Lord: for the day of judgment will be revealed in the fire which will precede the face of the judge, burning the face of the world, enveloping the wicked and cleansing the just. Ps 96 (v. 3) says of this: “Fire goes before him, and burns up his adversaries round about.” But the day of the Lord which occurs at death will be revealed in the fire of purgatory, by which the elect will be cleansed, if any require cleansing: Job (__23:10__) can be interpreted as referring to this fire: “When he has tried me, I shall come forth as god.” Finally, the day of the Lord, which is the day of tribulation permitted by God’s judgment, will be revealed in the fire of tribulation: “For gold is tested in the fire, and acceptable men in the furnace of humiliation” (Sir 2:5)._
Part of St Augustine's commentary below
_It is then, I say, the same reason which prevents the Church at any time from praying for the wicked angels, which prevents her from praying hereafter for those men who are to be punished in eternal fire; and this also is the reason why, though she prays even for the wicked so long as they live, she yet does not even in this world pray for the unbelieving and godless who are dead. For some of the dead, indeed, the prayer of the Church or of pious individuals is heard; but it is for those who, having been regenerated in Christ, did not spend their life so wickedly that they can be judged unworthy of such compassion, nor so well that they can be considered to have no need of it.1547 As also, after the resurrection, there will be some of the dead to whom, after they have endured the pains proper to the spirits of the dead, mercy shall be accorded, and acquittal from the punishment of the eternal fire. For were there not some whose sins, though not remitted in this life, shall be remitted in that which is to come, it could not be truly said, “They shall not be forgiven, neither in this world, neither in that which is to come.”1548 But when the Judge of quick and dead has said, “Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world,” and to those on the other side, “Depart from me, ye cursed, into the eternal fire, which is prepared for the devil and his angels,” and “These shall go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life,”1549 it were excessively presumptuous to say that the punishment of any of those whom God has said shall go away into eternal punishment shall not be eternal, and so bring either despair or doubt upon the corresponding promise of life eternal._

Here is the Biblical explanation of hell. Jesus taught that all people would be either saved lost or, that they would go to either heaven or hell. “The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity; And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth. Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Who hath ears to hear, let him hear.” No question about it, it’s one place or the other according to Jesus. What goes to hell? Jesus answers it for us in Matthew 5:30 “And if thy right hand offends thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.” He says the “whole body” would be cast into hell, not a spirit or “soul”. BTW, the term “soul” is defined in Genesis 2:7 “And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.” It says here man “became a living soul”, not that he was given a soul. He, man, was formed of the dust of the earth and given the breath of life from God, or the metabolism, the spark of life if you will and became a soul. In a ship disaster they say, “All souls on board were lost”, meaning all people. So the whole “body” will be cast into hell. When does this happen? Not at the moment of death. According to Jesus it in the parable of the wheat and the tares, Matthew 13:29 - 43, it happens at the harvest and “the harvest is the end of the world” (verse 39). 2 Peter 2:9 says, “The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished”. Where are the unjust “reserved”. Jesus says in John 5:28 & 29 “Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.” When will those in their graves hear His voice and come forth? At Christs 2nd coming. When does Christ reward the good and the evil? Mathew 16:27 “For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works.” When He comes again. Revelation 22:12 “And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.” Daniel 12:2 “And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.” They are “reserved” in the grave until then. Then where is hell? 2 Peter3:7 & 10 “But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.” And “…and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.” He says the earth is “reserved” for that purpose. Also see Isaiah 34:8 & 9 and Psalm 11:6. Matthew 10:28 Jesus said “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.”. He said God will “destroy” body and soul in hell, meaning all of the unsaved, every part of them, will be destroyed. Not punished eternally. Would God do that, eternally torment and torture someone who chose to believe in evolution but lived a relatively good life? Not the God of the Bible. He will destroy them and they will suffer the 2nd death. Revelation 20:14 & 15 says “ And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.”. The unsaved suffer eternal death not eternal suffering. Is that not bad enough, to be eternally separated from God. Must He torture people forever? So after a trillion years of torture, exquisite pain and suffering, God will tell those suffering “You have only just begun”? Whoa, really? That’s not what the Bible teaches, that’s not the God of the Bible. Jesus said, “Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.” Also see 2 Peter 3:13. How long do they burn? How can we inherit it if it is a lake of fire? John 3:16 says “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” and Roman 6:23 says “The wages of sin is death”. 1 John 5:11 & 12 “And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.” John 3:16 says unbelievers will “perish” and Paul say the wages of sin is death. Ezekiel 18:4 makes it clearer “The soul that sinneth, it shall die” It is clear, the unsaved die, not live forever. So, what Jesus tells us about hell is that it is the final destination of those who do not choose salvation through Jesus, that an unsaved persons “whole body” will be cast into hell and not a “soul” or “spirit”, they will be destroyed in hell and not suffer eternally. Their punishment will be eternal. There will be no second chances after that, but they will not be tortured forever, they will be eternally destroyed. Hell is not eternal. It’s consequences are. Hell will be on this earth and sin will be burnt up with sinners then the earth will be made new. A new heaven and a new earth, free from sin where God and His people will live together. All this is taught in the Bible, from the mouth of Jesus. Check it out for yourself. Don’t take my word or the word of anyone else. Your life depend on you knowing the Truth personally. Jesus said “I am the Way, the Truth and the Life”. Trust Him and His Word only. Blessings as you study His Word. Purgatory is not Biblical

Semi-Pelagianism. The ideaof infused personal holiness stems from a flawed soteriology. It's not like there is atonement and then sanctification as a separate process. We don't pay for our salvation with post-mortem suffering. Jesus did that. We don't have the currency. Only the blood of the God Man atones. See Hebrews.

Scripture refers God as refiner's fire and fuller's soap (Malachi 3:2). There must be reason why Scripture says so - both have something to do with refining and cleansing. Zech 13:8-9 says that God will put some into fire as one refines silver and test gold.
The main reason why Protestants have problem with purgatory is because they follow the teaching of the Reformers of double imputation: Through faith alone they will receive Christ's righteousness imputed on or credited to them while their sins, past AND future, are imputed on or credited to Christ, who bore them on the cross. If all their sins, past and future are credited to Christ who bore them on the cross, then purgatory will make what Christ did insufficient. But is double imputation scriptural? Ezekiel 18:20 says "the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon himself and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon himself". Both righteousness and wickedness are not transferrable!

There is no Protestant Bible - there is one Bible that the heretic Luther "edited" to the extent that he initially removed 25 books from it.

You have succeeded in creating some kind of alternative Mickey Mouse Protestant theology that does not really exist anywhere else but in the USA.
To us, catholics, such and such theology is simply unbelievable.
US Catholics allow themselves to be convinced by members of sects, because by all official definitions of things you call "denominations" are sects, that some kind of theology was created 1517 years after Christ by a fallen monk - correct??

any idea where Isaiah 1:18 came from? It’s from the Jewish culture wherein they tie a red rope on the escape goat which was symbolizes all the sins committed by the Israelites while they are still in the desert. That goat is led out of their encampment and needs to be driven out should it try to enter. As long as it remains red, they knew their sins were not forgiven, on the other hand, if it turns white then they’ll knew they were forgiven. They are in the desert … I have no idea where that “snow” came from. Figuratively, it sounds great but the idea of a snow in the desert is questionable

Nowhere in scripture does it state that when we die we are “called into God’s self-giving life-giving love” as stated in the video. When a person dies “Their body returns to the ground it came from, and the spirit returns to God who gave it (Ecclesiastes 12:7).
It remains that way either until the second coming of Yeshua/Jesus (for believers in Yeshua) or the Great White Throne Judgement (Revelation 20:11-15) where non-believers will be thrown into the lake of fire.
The concept of purgatory after a person dies is contrary to Yeshua’s finished work on the cross (John 19:28-30). Basing the idea of purgatory on ancient beliefs as stated in the video does not make it correct or biblical.
    1 Corinthians 3:13
The fire mentioned will come on "the Day" meaning the "day of our Lord Yeshua the Messiah" in 1 Corinthians 1:8. This is the day of Yeshua's judgment that will come during the end times. This is when a person will be judged for their works as a believer. It is not to judge their sin.
People must put their faith in Yeshua while they are still alive to receive eternal life. Once they have and then pass away, they will be raised to everlasting glory when He returns. If they still needed “further purification” as taught by the Catholic church, then then the blood of Yeshua is not enough (1 John 1:7).
In the Compendium of The Catechism of the Catholic Church, it states that Purgatory is for those who “die in God’s friendship”. This would seem to indicate that it is for believers in Yeshua.
Sadly, there are some who follow the Catholic religion whose family members are non-believers and have passed away that find false hope in this doctrine. Asking someone, either living or dead (the Saints), for help getting a loved one into Heaven, will not change the fate of the deceased.
If it could, then Yeshua was crucified for nothing.

“When, however, they [the Gnostics] are confuted from the Scriptures, they turn around and accuse these same Scriptures as if they were not correct….But, again, when we refer them to that tradition which originates from the apostles, which is preserved by means of the successions of presbyters in the churches, they object to tradition, saying that they themselves are wiser not merely than the presbyters, but even than the apostles.” (1.415).*
“In this order, and by this succession, the ecclesiastical tradition from the apostles and the preaching of the truth have come down to us. And this is most abundant proof that there is one and the same life-giving faith, which has been preserved in the church from the apostles until now, and handed down in truth.” (1.416)*
“Papias [A.D. 120], who is now mentioned by us, affirms that he received the sayings of the apostles from those who accompanied them, and he, moreover, asserts that he heard in person Aristion and the presbyter John. Accordingly, he mentions them frequently by name, and in his writings gives their traditions [concerning Jesus]. . . . [There are] other passages of his in which he relates some miraculous deeds, stating that he acquired the knowledge of them from tradition” (fragment in Eusebius, Church History 3:39 [A.D. 312]).
“In the third place from the apostles, Clement was allotted the bishopric. This man had seen the blessed apostles and had been conversant with them. Therefore, he might be said to have the preaching of the apostles still echoing [in his ears] and their traditions before his eyes. Nor was he alone in this. For there were many still remaining who had received instructions from the apostles. (1.416)*
Now all these [heretics] are of much later date than the bishops to whom the apostles committed the Churches; which fact I have in the third book taken all pains to demonstrate. It follows, then, as a matter of course, that these heretics aforementioned, since they are blind to the truth, and deviate from the [right] way, will walk in various roads; and therefore the footsteps of their doctrine are scattered here and there without agreement or connection. But the path of those belonging to the Church circumscribes the whole world, as possessing the sure tradition from the apostles, and gives unto us to see that the faith of all is one and the same, since all receive one and the same God the Father, and believe in the same dispensation regarding the incarnation of the Son of God, and are cognizant of the same gift of the Spirit, and are conversant with the same commandments, and preserve the same form of ecclesiastical constitution, and expect the same advent of the Lord, and await the same salvation of the complete man, that is, of the soul and body. And undoubtedly the preaching of the Church is true and steadfast, in which one and the same way of salvation is shown throughout the whole world. [Irenaeus, Against Heresies, Book 5, Ch. 20]

In the passage you referenced in 1 Corinthians 11:2, you must also take into account what is said in the previous verse where Paul writes “Be imitators of me, just as I also am of Messiah.

He would have been well aware of the traditions of men Yeshua chastised the rabbis for such as the ritual handwashing in Luke 11:38-39 and Matthew 15:2-3. So when he spoke about traditions that have been handed down, they would have most certainly been based on Torah not the man-made traditions of the Catholic church.
The teachings and doctrine of men is why Yeshua said in Mark 7:8-9 “And in vain they worship Me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’ Having left behind the commandment of God, you hold on to the tradition of men.” He was also telling them, “You set aside the commands of God, in order that you may validate your own tradition.
      And in Mark 7:13
“Making void the word of God with your tradition that you’ve handed down. And you do many such things.”
Paul’s writings based on Torah are in direct contrast to the man-made traditions of the Catholic church such as: Purgatory, Indulgences, Praying to Mary and the Saints and changing God’s 4th Commandment, the Sabbath, from Saturday to Sunday. First where do you actually believe the KJV (or even the Bible) come from??? Jesus didn't write it; the Jews did not have a settled canon until well into 150AD and even then it was specifically an anti-christian canon. Except for Paul (who was not an original 12), and perhaps John; none of the Apostles wrote any of their own material. NONE of the original manuscripts for the NT exist today. By 385AD when the Catholic Church created the First and Only Bible; there were over 5000 pieces, scraps, forgeries, of claimed inspired texts spread all over Christendom. So at a time when ALL of Christendom was in agreement about the Authority of Rome; they whittled this 5000 down to 73 books. Based solely on their claimed and believed Authority to do so; did the Catholic Church at that time that these specific 73 were indeed God-breathed and inerrant. Without that Authorative claim from Apostolic Succession you would not have a Bible as it is known and used today even by Sola Scripturists.
Without that history behind what you claim is scripture; then you have INVENTED a fake scripture with a false unsubstantiated claim to be the Word of God and Inerrant. So what are you using as your source against Catholicism when you claim to be interpreting 'scripture'????? You have no idea of what it is and why you can trust it. You may as well quote the Koran or the Hindu Vadas with equal authority as to claim the KJV is the Bible. If you can't see that point, then you are truly clueless and should not be debating.
Your second invention is the way you have interpreted your false scriptures. Who died and left you the interpreter for me about scripture?? I read the same words and get a much different understanding which agrees with the Catholic Faith. The whole history of protestantism is replete with split after split after split of disagreements about what the supposed bible says to the point where since the great deformation of Christianity caused by Luther, in 500 years you now have over 40,000 conflicting and confusiing interpretations. Not a single one of them can substantiate a claim to be Apostolic or have the Authority which the Catholic Faith can easily establish.
If an idol is a false image worshipped by others of the truth then you guys have made an idol of the bible (unsubstantiated scriptures) and Jesus (false theology based on false scriptures and unauthorized interpretations). Way to go guys. This is your invented world. Own it.

Scripture refers God as refiner's fire and fuller's soap (Malachi 3:2). There must be reason why Scripture says so - both have something to do with refining and cleansing. Zech 13:8-9 says that God will put some into fire as one refines silver and test gold.

'..... on the basis of Christ's righteousness imputed to me..' You do realize this whole 'imputation' notion is a man-made concept created by the false interpretation of one man a few years ago. If you want to base your salvation on some man who didn't have the God-given Authority to interpret scripture for you, and came up with a novel un-biblical notion never known to Christianity for the first 1900 years or so: then go ahead.. You're only pulling the wool over your own eyes.
See if you can answer two questions which will expose this silly 'imputation' theology. 1) What exactly did you do such that this 'imputation' applies to you and not someone else? 2) What exactly do you mean when you say 'Christ has done it all', such that you are not invoking the idea of Universal Salvation?
If you actually have to do something to receive this 'imputation', no matter how small of an act it may be; then you are implying a works-based salvation; especially if this act defines you getting this imputation and the refusal of another to do this thing (by will or ignorance) means they do not receive this imputation. It would be interesting to watch you try and flush out what you mean by 'Christ has done it all'. It's a nice saying but means nothing if you can't explain it, or its consequences. It's like saying God is Love thus you are saved. This is where most protestants suddenly become very Catholic. The moment you actually try and define what you mean and avoid the fallacy of Universal Salvation; you will find yourself using a lot of Catholic terms and concepts. Let's see how you do with it.

@@allanyoung6231 The Good Thief hung on the cross for hours with Jesus. Unless you know the state of a soul upon it's death; you have no idea what its judgement is going to be. For one thing many scholars would argue that the Paradise Jesus speaks of here may not be Heaven. For one thing Jesus was to be the First Fruits into Heaven and by Easter Sunday upon His Resurrection He told Mary He had not yet Ascended to the Father. Even still, the Church Fathers have always said that the use of time when talking of Purgatory was not meant to be Earthly Time, but a comparable understanding of what one might experience while undergoing purgation. For example if I said one person might experience purgatory as a slight sunburn on the skin lasting a day, while someone else might experience it as a severe sunburn lasting a week. In reality both might experience Purgatory for only a moment after death but time comparisons might help explain how one might experience that moment. The Good Thief may well have gone to Purgatory on Good Friday and still been with Jesus in Heaven before the day was out and what Jesus said could still be true.
I'm just curious as to what is so magical about death that one moment you are a lukewarm Christian going about your daily life, brain aneurism, then 10 seconds later you are suddenly fit for heaven???? Jesus calls everyone to be perfect as our heavenly Father is perfect; that no sin will enter heaven. Yes there are some, very few, who have by the Grace of God and following the example of Jesus in obedience have attained such perfect in this life; but what of those who haven't; who didn't have enough time, or were somewhat but not perfectly obedient??? What is so magical about death that seconds after it they are suddenly ready for heaven when moments ago they were not?
