Perfect timing. I've just bought a SPTA buffer/polisher and it came with a lot of pads. I'm a home DIY, nothing professional, and this video explained everything perfectly. Thanks for this. Keep up the great work.
Thanks for clearing up the mystery of mechanical compound and polish. I have had numerous muscle cars over the years and was super intimidated by machine as opposed to hand buffing. With your knowledge I can now say I am ordering my first buffer, pads, compound and polish. You have given me the confidence I need to improve my 1967 GTX to showroom condition. I can’t wait to get started. Thanks again!
Man! Thank you! For this diy tutorial! I’m currently in a collision and repair program and we’ve gone through all this and we’ve done labs actually practicing doing all these and I’ve done pretty good where my fender practice piece has looked factory. But…. The thing is they provide us with those pads. Compounds/polishers ready and in step by step…. And I get different answers (out of experience) when I try to get exact match to match. (I get it user preference)….. but your tutorial is a breath of fresh air to quickly grasp the idea of what to use with what. Thank you lol. I’ll know when I get better I can know which to use with what but for a beginner you’re the man
Thanks, Scott, for the interesting and informative videos. I used to use Megs 105/205 and indeed found the 105 difficult to work with, especially if it got dry and hard. I now use the Megs 110/210 with Menzerna SF 3800 as a jeweling polish.
Each time I check into Scott's site I learn something. FYI I recently found Griots product at my car place. Thanks for your explanations which are helpful. This guy is definitely passionate about his profession. Thumbs up!
I was hoping you would touch on hitting fresh lacquer but I missed it if you did. I'm getting ready to buff the customade tank from my 113" stroker motor chopper after painting it early this past Spring but got too busy with prepping for having our new house built so I'm just now getting around to it. One thing for sure, it's had plenty of time to cure, lol!
When it comes down to what pads go with what creams I use pretty much what you have mentioned! The orange pad really does good work as an all around pad! When it comes to a 2 or 3 stage process then I will use a little different selection like MF, Orange then red or black! I wish I did some of my own vids on TH-cam that may possibly help begginers, but guys like you do a great job! Thanks for your time and effort Scott!
@@allenroblin2372 Black goes for polishing after all corrections have been made. I really don't use them for anything else but wax or high gloss polish.
I'm a professional car cleaner and this guy is spot on.One advice i would say is after buffing your car is wax every month afterwards for 3 months to get that gleam an amazing look.I use Autoglym Ultra gloss 4x a year and boy does that give an amazing shine! It does smell when applying and it must stay on the paint 1hr in warmish weather but not in direct sun.It transforms the paint amazingly like you sprayed a coat of lacquer on it.
All I can say is WOW! So informative and well explained video. I’m fairly new to detailing but I know my ways but always so cool to hear how other detailers do it. Love orange pads!
Thank you for taking the time to help out the beginners like myself. I will be going after some swirls and scratches on my black 2006 Chevy Monte Carlo SS.

Apologies for my previous comment about your presentations. I have just viewed this presentation and it answered many many questions on pads and compounds. Excellent. Thanks.,,
This is information that I am grateful to review. I'm just outside of being a noob I've used my polisher about five or six times. This is information I can add to my arsenal and I value it very much. I have gotten really great results using ultimate compound and polish duo with lake country orange and white pads. Using those leave the finish very deep and rich on my dark colors. It's very gratifying to see the paint come alive! Thanks Scott for your contribution!
Great as always, thank you. I am a beginner, but I have come to the same conclusion and do for the most use soft and medium pads. You can`t do much wrong then. Just began to try to learn agressive cutting with a rotary machine and the tougher pads.
Awesome! The way I have understood paint correction is to place them in "buckets": Compounds Polishes Glazes Waxes ...and apply in that order dependent on defects. Sometimes if I have very light defects I will use a polish w orange pad to fill in the voids and smooth out the surface with great success as I do try to avoid using a compound as much as possible. And I sometimes skip glazes as they are there for shine enhancement purposes. I have never dealt w all in ones like hd speed but have heard great things on it.
I did my first polish ever and I'm fortunate enough to have my own polisher. Im watching this video the day after and I've learned a ton. Thank you Scott! I tackled a whole 2018 Sierra Denali and the machine was fantastic for the job.
I got some light scratches, swirls and water spots out using Maguire’s ultimate polish using orange/white hexlogic pads. On my car, I’m going to use ultimate compound with an orange hexlogic pad, follow up with ultimate polish and a white pad. I may go all-out and finish with Maguire’s gold class carnuba wax/black hexlogic pad combo. I also just ordered a 5 & 3” backing plates with pads for my polisher. Your vids have helped a ton Scott, thank you!
The difference between smooth v waffle/hex is heat distribution. Theoretically the waffle/hex disperses buffing heat from the pad better than the smooth....In my experience though it makes no odds, only that the designed ones wear down quicker.
