Lol I forgot to say, with his fast playing, this guy would be great for playing the song I just requested … doesnt really leave any room for those excessive fills that he likes to do, but Id be curious to see how precise he would pull it off.
As a photographer: I'm pretty sure that's not a Polaroid, but a Fuji Instax. Not that it matters, but since I know nothing about drums, that bit of nerdy info is all I have to offer. The man's insane.
He's doing something amazing. Anyone can cover a fast metal song...eventually. But this dude is reinventing songs. He's not just learning or imitating Neal's vocabulary or Anika or anyone. He's continuously reinventing his own vocabulary in front of our eyes.
About 6 months ago I got into touch-typing. El Estepario Siberiano story taught me I have to be disciplined with practice in whatever I want to achieve... So it's not only about drumming! Although I don't have 8h a day for that practice, thanks to him, I am doing my best everyday.
I’m not a drummer, however I’m a professional dancer. I love to watch him perform as I understand how much discipline and technique goes into physical work. His creativity is chef’s kiss (as is his humor).
I think Estepario has said the same himself, but a fellow drummer on a recent gig was changing to that grip whenever he had to do blast beats on the ride cymbal and I asked him why after the gig and he said he does so when his hand gets tired and/or he starts to notice tension in the thumb area.
This guy is simply living on a different planet in another solar system. He's quite simply one of the most, if not the most, amazing drummer I've seen ever.
I have been watching him for a while he uses the "vulcan" grip when he is doing quick work on the cymbal so it bounces easier and faster. He switches back and forth in alot of his videos.
He said he uses this grip just for endurance. Also, I would love to see a reaction on his cover of Muse Knights of Cydonia. His footwork there is incredible!
Two reasons for the grip: 1) It can release tension on certain parts of your forearm 2) You can tell his right hand was bleeding quite a bit at the end. He may have been avoiding the blister/wound.

He's said in a video in the past that he changes his grip to prevent a repetitive stress injury that he is working around. Also he consistently adds the "claw" grip throughout his playing in almost every video he does even in spots you didn't notice.
5:00 no, he throws the right hand stick into the air, then grabs the left hand stick with his right hand before he grabs the stick in his pants with his left hand, and then he catches the falling stick with his right hand (did I get that right?). Or something like that.

He plays the dualist pedal that has 2 modes.. Single kick with one downstroke and dual kick with one hit on downstroke and second one when the pedal comes up.. The fact that he is able to switch the mode within the kickpattern is mindblowing.. He switches the "mode" by stomping his heel to the side of the pedal..
Such a huge point you make here Andrew. Disengaged practice is wasted practice. We need to dedicate 100% when in the practice room, and it will make the total hours spent less.
I had an amazing teacher who taught me this- You MUST have a plan for your practice. Written if possible. I use the VDG at times when I play because I have nerve damage in my hands due to botched bilateral carpel tunnel surgery. It allows my hands to relax my hands and gives me more endurance. It is such a joy to watch him take creative measures with songs to elevate them from their studio takes. What's crazier is that he's a young talent, and well... Watch out, Thomas Lang... @@AndrewRooneyDrums ah thank you I love your videos mr drum teacher lots of great music grat drummers and you have your experience it's great where else can we learn about the death grip lol 😆
I’d like to see him play this song twice in a row. I wonder if each version would be identical, or if he just goes where his instinct takes him? Regardless, each version is sure to be amazing.
I can tell you. He does not improvise. All he does is 100% what he meant to do. He does not know how to read music but he has his very own "rudimentary" system for writing what he wants to play.. He writes down his parts giving each part of his drum kit a "sound" with his mouth, like a kid, yeah. Then he writes downs how many beats are required for that part and then he memorizes where each beat goes in.
I think the changes of grips are done for "stamina".. the movement does not use exactly the same muscle groups, so it might help with cramps and the like...

The vulcan death grip lol! Maybe the Wolverine grip, and if it is the Wolverine why not go for 3 sticks. They don't even have to be sticks. The tough part of the watch is that he is bleeding at the end of the video. no one noticed the blood/blisters on his hand at the end... to practice and play something that hard as to make yourself bleed is commitment to your craft.
Hey, does anyone know if Andrew ever reacted to a self-taught drummer named David Dockery improvising to Imogen Heap's live performance of 'Just for Now?" I searched his whole archive but was unable to find anything resembling it. The reason I ask is that about a year and a half ago, I was consistently watching Andrew's uploads with an almost religious zeal and had come across a video I thought he might enjoy. It wasn't going to floor him or anything like that, but it was a quality upload that was more rhythmic than it was dripping with over-the-top drumming techniques. I felt Andrew may be more like me in that the majority of submissions at the time consisted of extremely talented drummers whose frantic, complex, playing style was simply too much for me to appreciate and enjoy audibly, despite being in awe visually. What's more, it seemed at times that showing off this amazing talent had surpassed actually playing something others could move to. This is why I enjoyed his Led Zepplin (John Bonham) reactions so much! At any rate, at the time, I was aware that Andrew took requests and reacted to submissions that primarily, if not entirely, came from paying subscribers and not just your regular fans of the channel. However, at the time, every dime I was making was being used to survive, day to day, as I faced not just financial obstacles but emotional ones as well. As much as I would have liked to, I simply wasn't able to subscribe at that time. Knowing this, I decided I would still try my luck and wrote to him using the email address he posts on his TH-cam channel for business opportunities. I, of course, apologized for using his email for something other than business and promised I would never use it again, which I didn't. I proceeded to tell him I was a long-time fan who had something he just might enjoy. That was all that mattered-that maybe I had found something that would spur one of those genuine reactions you get when he is listening to a piece of music for the first time that he truly enjoys. I also explained that I wasn't able to become a paying member at the moment due to various issues but would become one as soon as it was financially viable. After I sent it, I will admit that part of me thought that the man I thought I had come to know would understand my situation and sincerely appreciate the effort and support. This might even lead him to bend the rules a little and react on video, the ultimate outcome I could have hoped for. The other half of me had resigned to the likelihood that my lack of a paying membership had already determined the outcome of the gamble the second it popped into my head. Unfortunately, I never heard back from him and have never found any evidence that the link I sent was viewed or that my message was ever even read. I may be wrong, and if I am, and I hope this is the case, then I apologize right now for doubting his sincerity and want to thank him for exceeding my expectations. Until then, though, I have to assume that this is not the case, given the lack of correspondence or evidence proving otherwise. This is a shame, given that now that I have the financial means, I lack the desire. Too many on TH-cam and other streaming websites become driven solely by money, making them rigid and unwilling to compromise, bend, or even put forth even the most miniscule amount of effort or fulfill a fan's request unless, of course, it is preceded by a monetary infusion. What they once gladly gave repeatedly out of true appreciation, communal bonding, and respect often now doesn't even warrant a response and has been known to even trigger verbal scolding, as if the mere thought of doing anything for free is tantamount to insulting them personally. Now, before anyone gets upset, I am not referring to Andrew here, and I honestly feel his character is not capable of such acts as a result of success and greed. I was disappointed and hurt, however, when the months passed and no response arrived. Eventually, I found other content creators that seemed to put less importance on donations and more focus and energy on building a relationship with their viewers or non-paying subscribers. My situation changed, and I was happy to donate to channels as a way to support the content they created and were putting out to the world. As long as my donation was utilized properly and did not serve as a prerequisite to communication or action by the content creator, I was happy to pay. I have never and will never pay for sex, and the same goes for someone hearing and responding to me, unless, of course, they are psychiatrists. lol Stay golden, Andrew and everyone else, and take care.

haha you missed out one part. he didn't have the claw grip when he took the 3rd stick. he changed his grip before that, which is insane. He swapped from claw grip to a normal grip so quickly i can't even see how he did it
no one noticed the blood/blisters on his hand at the end... to practice and play something that hard as to make yourself bleed is commitment to your craft.
Amazing video!!!!
He's a god!
I have never and will never pay for sex, and the same goes for someone hearing and responding to me, unless, of course, they are psychiatrists. lol
Stay golden, Andrew and everyone else, and take care.

Have you ever checked out Sina-drums. She is great. Here is Wipe Out from 7 years ago. She has a lot of new stuff. But this is the song I started with.
I don't mind you stopping the video to actually see whats going on when it's for a reaction. If I want to hear it uninterrupted I choose the original.
And yes, I'm one of the non-drummers entralled by his passion
