He’s got a weight on his snare drum. I’ve never seen that before. But I’ve never er seen/heard anyone play like this guy. Jaw dropping.
Also look up my buddy Louis Levesque from Montreal. He’s played in bands such as Genetic Control, Unruled, Lizard, E-Force, Rabid, and most recently joined up with seminal Montreal metal band DBC, who are recording new material starting next Thursday. He’s an incredible drummer.

I haven’t noticed that grip till you pointed it out. Funny thing though, just last week I was playing some stuff for long periods of time and my fingers started cramping up and I was experimenting with that same grip. Come to find out that it does seem weird and odd, but my fingers were more relaxed and I was able to continue drumming without any cramping. Worth experimenting more, especially after you picked up on it. Playing full time at 65 Rock on drummers. 👍

El Estepario makes me want to pick up some drumsticks and have a go never drummed but he has opened my mind up to something new I wanna give a go I'm 52 never too old to learn.
Ive been using that wired grip for a very long time now. It's amazing how much speed you can get it's kinda like the finger method but the crazy thing is how fast he goes from matched grip to that between the finger grip
That drummer has been do this for over fifteen years.
I used to hold the sticks like that whenever I got a blister between my thumb and index.
Morgan Rose from the band Seven Dust would also be an amazing drummer to watch

The dude put out an amazing short video as a response to people accusing him of speeding up his videos. It was him playing one handed whilst holding a tablet with a stopwatch counting up to prove the video wasn't sped up and at the end he looks into the lens and says "if you people spent as much time practicing as you do hating, you'd be able to that, but you don't so you can't" or words to that effect. Just supreme talent.

@ach You beat me to the comment. This was originally recorded by Mike Mangini. Portnoy left the band 3 years earlier. This tune came from their 2nd album with Mangini on drums.
From what I read, the problem with the sound on the original recording was that they tried to recreate the drum sound on Images and Words and used drum triggers.
@@dtfreak they definitely didn't use triggers on that record (they did on Images and Words). If so it would be the worst apply of drum triggers/samples in history. It's just a extremely compressed snare sound with a high amount of the bottom signal. They clearly wanted to get an 80s vibe of snare sound though. At that time his snare sounded live pretty much the same, too.

I don’t buy that part though, never actually seen the green but I’ve seen a video of him rolling Tobacco so I’m inclined to believe they’re all cigarettes unless I see the actual green. I never seen anyone use weed daily and be able to be that sharp. Most have trouble with basic tasks while stoned.

Thanks for sharing your view and impressions on this mad guy, Andrew. I'm a drummer, I've been following El Estepario Siberiano ("The Siberian from the Steppe" or "The Siberian Stepperian" in English) for a while and he was my 2020 drumming finding. I've never heard something this good with such a limited number of drum pieces. Incredible. It's too bad you can't follow his videos and streams on you tube since they're mostly in Spanish with the exception of some subtittles. In his videos he speaks about his different techniques, methods, his routines (this guy has been practicing 10 hours a day for the past ten years or so, every single day from 7pm in the morning, crazy routines). Another thing that amazes me is his sound signature and style. It's unique.

he also has a whole series of 1 handed drumming, usually playing heavy metal, and he is doing things like drinking a coffee, reading a book, or doing finger guns (for the double bass drum/machine gun type sounds). It's an absolute must watch in my opinion. His face also remains totally calm while he does this. Check it out if you want to, and I think you won't be disappointed.

I love that he gets a great sound from a Mike Mangini track, who has an absolutely rediculously epic kit, and this guy has only 3 drums and a couple of select cymbals... PS thanks for the shoutout and getting to this one!
i've been watching him for a while now and there is a secret to why he is this relaxed... spoiler, it's weed :D oh, and 10 hours practice each day, guess thats important too

I use the split finger grip all the time. I broke both of my hands and wrists some time ago and have a tendency to drop my sticks. The split finger grip on my right hand is something I switch to predominately on cymbal work so I don't throw my stick accidentally and primarily because of the great speed I can achieve for quick responsiveness on cymbals. By having the fulcrum between my fingers, I can use the other three digits to manipulate the back end of the stick faster than with the standard grip. Hope that helps!
Its worth noting that, having mastered one footing complicated double pedal drum parts, and monstering them, El Estepario Siberiano, is now, one year later, smashing out Slipknot and Avenged Sevenfold drum parts ONE HANDED🤯

He has a video explaining how he manages to get that phenomenal sound out of an EAD10. The technique includes epic quantities of damping, removing most of the toms because they either block the sound or overwhelm it, and using crash cymbals as hi-hats. He does also do plenty of double pedal stuff but not for this song. Check out his "shorts" they are as outrageous as you'd expect given this video.
This guy is an absolute monster with the drums! He makes short videos where he does stuff that is out of this world. I have seen videos where he plays with a coffee mug in one hand and you cant even tell he is playing with just one hand. I have never seen a drummer with his speed and control look so effortless. Awesome drummer!

This dude is the lockdown king! Up until recently, when he got a gig in a band, he was putting out covers every day. He also used to have a clock behind him where you could see he was doing a one take cover. You should check some of the covers where he also uses that weight as a coaster for his coffee.
You need to check his Gangnam Style cover. His chops in that are absolutely ridiculous and he has so much fun playing it.

OMG. I was just, completely captivated. From his level of calm, coolness, to his into-it screaming, to his never-before-seen techniques... I am SO happy you featured this dude, and whoever suggested him, huge hats off to you! I rewound 10:50 multiple times before seeing your reaction, and sure enough, you had about the same reaction I did and rewound it yourself! Then, near the end, watching him play just kinda broke my brain into crossing a threshold and accepting this guy actually exists. Wow.

He has videos showing a full 7 piece kit when he was younger. So, it's not like he doesn't have access. I firmly believe that he did this intentionally to increase his skill set by limiting what he could use to replicate songs with more drums. He's insanely good.

Watch his video about how he set up his EAD-10. The entire reason he got rid of the toms is because to quote "They sounded like s##t". So yeah, he got rid of his toms because they didn't record well with the EAD-10. He's a freakin' madman. Toms sound bad? Fine, I'll play insanely difficult songs without them.
I am not a drummer but if you watch his "one handed" videos, the fulcrum may make sense. Again, not a drummer.

He has posted his back story. Whow ! He could have done anything he wanted to do and chose this path to support himself whilst studying. He’s meant to do this. He’s possibly the greatest drummer in the world right now.
His name translates to The Siberian Steppe... For those who don't know a steppe is a large area of grassland with no trees. 😁
Actually, it would be "The guy from the Siberian Steppe"
His one hand videos is also a lot of fun to watch, playing intricate melodies, and sipping from a can at the same time. He is both an impressive drummer, and a fun entertainer. He also say something like "I can only play 4/4, no more artistic stuff", so he indicates that he has limitations and knows it. He also indicates that he does practice from time to time, and breathes, that's about it. His artist name is somewhat difficult to remember. The Siberian Estepario would have been easier, if you are a Swede like me.
In answer to your question about double kick, he recently (couple of months ago maybe) did a video about having to get a double pedal for an audition, first time he'd used one in many years apparently. Because his thing is those absolutely outrageous linear singles between hands and foot.

Also, good video breaking down what's so special about Siberiano. I discovered him last summer and my jaw hasn't left the floor. He does occasionally use a double-pedal as well.

The floor tom techniques he is using has been used by many drummers over the years. John Bonham and Buddy Rich to name a few.
I am interested in the grip. Had a kid in marching band use it to play bass drum with that same grip. Never used it myself.
I have seen several of this guys videos. He is amazing. Now I will go practice.
I normally don't care for reaction videos, but ESS is something else, and to see someone who's been doing this forever being blown away is so amazing to watch
