had a similar run up the rail (though for more of the race than Richie had), and was similarly not picked up by the race caller (Tom Durkin back then), till the very end of the race
The Greatest Kentucky Derby races I've watched were.....the Greatest Horse ever Secretariat, and a close second the 11th Triple Crown winner Affirmed, I was at that 1978 race in Louisville. Both were fabulous races. As far as the odds I guess it made the Greatest win, with the Rich Strike win at 80 - 1 payout a Cha Ching Bata Bing race! Saturday May 6th 2023, 149th running of the Kentucky Derby, I loved watching Mage# 8 as he made that from behind the track move. Hopefully he can do 2 more races like that and be the next Triple Crown Champion 👑❤🐎💰💰💰💰💰🤸♀️💃🎉 🥂👒📿💄💍💎🐎🌹🌹🌹💞🙏🏻
Secretariat lost 25% of his races, and he never even won 6 in a row. LOL. He was great during his TC races. After that, he was just "slightly better than average".
Secretariat's weakness was that he couldn't run on grass. It's like calling the Major League Champions the World Champions. In England Secretariat would have been little more than a Selling Player.
2nd best. Secretariat is first. Loved this race though, I watched it with a 101 year old Resident at my work. He passed away this year. We were yelling and screaming for Rich Strike.
I love this horse! He brought horse racing back to the forefront of sports and created a new legion of fans. What an amazing race! Masterful ride by Sonny Leon. 💕💕💕
Neither money nor selfishness are concepts which a racehorse ponders. . . Otherwise he never woulda made it, even as a longshot. Nor would we have witnessed one of the most moving sports events, EVER. The horses name, personality/character, couldn't be any more fitting than those 2 final furlongs where he saw daylight, and decided to 'flip the switch'. A perfect blend of blue collar personnel, including the owner, leaves an indelible mark on the sport of horse racing.
Watch Rich Strike from the beginning of video he won’t stop staring at the leader he was looking at the leader like you’re about to eat my dust !! I did it in track , too ! When his head goes straight , it’s awesome!!! Pace then size up leader (on long distance) and when you’re not tired nor using your fullest and are about to turn on the juice...that horse wanted to win , love that !!
Since this is about Rich Strike, even when he was in third towards the end of the last stretch, the race announcer didn't even mention Rich Strike until he practically won it.
The 1992 Kentucky Derby was Pat Day's ONLY win in 24 Kentucky Derby. Lil E. Tee was a longshot. Arazi, the favorite, was thought to be "unbeatable." Lil E. Tee looks Arazi straight in the eye before he passes him. When Lil E. Tee passed away, Pat Day said, "I've ridden better race horses. But the victory he gave me, is second to none."
Not even close. Sham in 1973 set a record for the second fastest derby ever. Unfortunately for him the winner that day set the record for the fastest ever, Secretariat. That record still stands 51 years later.
I think is the great race, Because the story of the Horse, the guy who's ride the horse and the owner of the horse. You have to know the story, Is beautiful 😍
How tremendously thrilling this was!! I’ve been following Rich Strike’s career since. This win was one of his very few ever. Which is so puzzling, since he obviously had the ability for great running. As of Late Autumn 2023, he was going to be Retired, but OWNER changed his mind. What’s happened since then is a mystery to me, since there’s basically no updates on the web. FRUSTRATING! I so hope that Richie is healthy, very well-cared for & enjoying his life ❤
I was so happy for Rich strike and his owners and trainers. You couldn't write a better script than that. It's always cool to see the underdog come through. Especially at 80 to 1! The horse had the perfect name. Because those that bet on him, struck it rich! A perfect ride by Sunny Leone!
No horse will ever be greater than Secretariat, but there's still room on the podium for other remarkable horses. Let's see what happens in the Preakness!
Secretariat hands-down, the greatest Kentucky Derby winner ever, and possibly in the most spectacular style. But when you consider the background of Rich Strike, picked up for $30,000 at a claiming race as a two-year-old when the average price of a Derby contender is almost 15x that, only ran in the Derby because of a scratch the day before, the trainer had never had a horse in the Kentucky Derby before, the jockey had never ridden in the Kentucky Derby before had never won a graded stakes race before, a totally unremarkable race record that made him such a long shot, who still didn’t seem to be anywhere in the race coming out of the last corner and still had to weave his way through horses to be fully unleashed, whose appearance at the front was so unexpected while everybody was focused on the “two best” horses in the field battling it out that the announcer didn’t even come up with his name until he took the lead at the end… definitely one of the greatest wins at least
Has everyone forgotten the epic battles to the wire of Affirmed and Alydar? Or am I mistaken? This was a Great Victory no doubt! And Secretariat is still the Greatest Triple Crown Winner so far. But the greatest race(s) have to be between those two horses Alydar vs Affirmed.
He was added after the horse Ethereal Road was out of the Kentucky derby. I remember the announcement of the horses when the announcer said, when it came to rich strike, the last-minute replacement, he said oh this horse doesn't matter he was just added. Amazing race for this average athlete horse. 👍
Lil E tee, was also a 50-1 long shot, I think 88, or 89 derby. He won the Jim Beam steaks, a few months earlier , in kentucky, he trained at turffway Park race track, less than 100 miles from Churchill downs. Me and my buddies, went to river downs in Cincinnati, made our bets. Last bet was a $20, ten apiece on lil e tee, just for shits n giggles. But we knew this dusta,ce was same as the beam steaks. We partied till Monday morning!!!!! We won over 5000 a peice!!!!!
The 1973 KY Derby is the greatest Derby of all time!!! Not sure how you think an 80-1 shot winner tops record setting time by Secretariat that still stands 51 years later. Rich Strike got lucky that day. Hasn’t won a race since then either.
Ferdinand's win was WAY better. The elderly Bill Shoemaker guided that horse up there so smoothly the announcer was stunned to see him suddenly there and winning the race. And he did it long before this race was run.
Well my best Kentucky Derby was in 1988 when winning colors won! Sure she didn't pay $180 to win. But coupled with forty- niner who ran second made for a good over $50 exacta if I remember correctly!
So many great turf tracks in the USA 🇺🇸, yet one of their most prestigious races is on dirt. Down here in the southern hemisphere, many people trying to work out why that is so.🤔😁👍
The greatest Kentucky race that ever was ran was ran by secretariat. I believe he said records in all three races he needed to become a Triple Crown winner and set records, and all three of them, including the Kentucky Derby.
We did a bet at work, putting $5 in the pot each. Drew the horses number on a paper. I was off when they drew, with me ending up with the long shot. I didn't know it was my horse till a co-worker texted, "you lucky witch!" Of course I got the meanest horse on the track. Too bad he didn't win the triple crown.
The only way that could be the greatest ever is that you owned the horse . Has he won a race since then ? SECRETARIAT THE GREATEST RACE HORSE EVER . Still holds all 3 records 51 YEARS later .
Great ride Sonny... Fast early pace sets up for a closer... The horse was not doped up. One of the most thrilling Derby's in my lifetime. I wasnt around for Secretariat or Affirmed. Mine that Bird was awesome as well.
Great story but now they need to go back down a class or two and get him another win to get his confidence back . He showed very little the other day on the same track.
@@stevek8829 I was just saying maybe they should find him a easy grade 2 or 3 to get him back in the winners circle , the horse has only crossed first on two occasions I believe. Mott has him now so we’ll see what he does .

Absolutely with Calvin "BoRail" who had rode Rachel Alexandra to win the Kentucky Oaks by 20 the day before
His sire Birdstone paid my rent for the month with the '04 Belmont win
Nice vid
I’m a very casual horse racing fan, but I remember sitting in stunned silence for about 10 mins after this race. One for the history books, for sure!!
Look for the video of Secretariat in the Belmont...he had seasoned race fans, sports announcers (and even his owners) in awe. A miracle.
