German here: The reason nobody outside of our country has ever heard of Gelsenkirchen - a 260,000 people city within Germany's most densely populated region, the Ruhrgebiet, close to Dortmund und Düsseldorf - is probably that the city's name is not in the title of its well-known soccer club, which actually had its fair share of international success on the European level in the past: FC Schalke 04. They are traditionally regarded as the large local rival to Borussia Dortmund and their stadium is actually the 5th largest in Germany (after Berlin, Dortmund and two in Munich). I'm living near Gelsenkirchen in Germany. It's part of the Ruhr area which has a population of 5 million but it's distributed over a dozen or so connected cities, so most people haven't heard of it.
My jaw hit the floor when Jimmy mentioned Gelsenkirchen Germany. I have an old friend there who would totally be amazed his small town was mentioned in a joke on an American late night show.
And my football team, FC Porto beat Monaco in the Champion League's final in Gelsenkirchen. I was really amazed that they mentioned the town on Jimmy Kimmel
