I saw Ride with Lush back in the day. I think it was Mark's birthday. I gave him a leather bracelet and saw him wearing it in the NME afew months later.
This music is just the BEST !!!!!!! All the stuff that came out in the early 90's to late 90's - and now there's a bit of a resurgence, though done a bit differently, still potent. Ride, MBV, The Jesus and Mary Chain, and countless others paved the way!
Thank you. I love Ride. Discovered them in around '91. Don't know how. I live in the US. It's not like they were on the radio. Nope. Way too good for American radio.
Xan Rosendahl That's right! 120 Minutes ruled. I discovered so many bands through 120 minutes, and I didn't even live in USA, but in the ex-Soviet Union at the time. The minute the MTV was allowed and broadcasted on cable, I was hooked :) 120 Minutes gradually became Alternative Nation over time, but it was nowhere near as good.
My most impressing experiences on 120 Minutes: The Breeders - Cannon Ball; Sloan - Underwhelmed; it was both the sound and the video which was something completely new
120 Minutes was the only way for many of us to learn about good music in the late 80s/early 90s, when popular music was at its nadir in the US. I still remember the night they played the video for 'Taste' and I instantly and forever became a Ride fan!
Like countless others, I come back to watch this performance over and over again, and get utterly and totally inspired. Welcome back, Ride. You are the ones I was waiting for.
I was too..I'm sure it was on the sunday and we were all very chilled and getting stoned..I'm sure spiritulised were on next and oasis played before perhaps..
This is a great concert! A new sound (britpop/retro) before most jumped on the bandwagon, great harmonies and some powerful sounds notably "Let's get lost".....I think a lot of people were disappointed that they had changed by this point but I think Ride were still great here(although "Tarantula" is a bit rubbish)
Having been a big fan of Ride's first 2 albums and shoegaze in general, I hated their 3rd album when it came out. Partly though it was because I was a teenager in LA growing up on Rodney on the Roq, and Andy&Mark had stopped by that show before they recorded Carnival of Light, and did this amazing acoustic set of about 4 of those songs with some of the most lovely harmonizing I'd ever heard. Man, I wish I could get my hands on the recording of that show, must have been late 1993.
I wouldn't say huge. I always thought they were better than Stone Roses, yet their debut album is critically acclaimed as one of the top ten best albums of all time, while Rides debut is mostly forgotten by the masses. Rides's early EP's & debut blew Stone Roses out of the water. As much as I loved the Roses (Blackpool ballroom was one of my favorite gigs of all time) I still thought Ride was a better band.
ride what can you say. really. carnival of light is a great lp. shoegazing ok but still as good now as then. check out :from time to time: such a beautiful song.
Andy bell had much more talent than been a bassist in oasis and beady eye I got the first ride album when it come out was much more different than the Manchester seen it rocked
You'll be happy to know then that they announced they were reforming yesterday for a tour. They will play Glasgow, Manchester, London, Amsterdam, Paris, Barcelona, Toronto and New York from May-June of 2015
Andy Bell himself called Carnival of Light, "Carnival of Shite" in hindsight. I wonder what happened to them after Nowhere and Going Blank Again. Was the hippy-dippy vibe pushed on them by above or did they fall on their own sword with it?
You can see Bell slowed the music down from this performance alone. Gardiner and Colbert just want to get their heads down and rock out. See how much they love the faster parts! I enjoyed Carnival of Light but Nowhere and Going Blank Again were better live
To many great bands like this over shadowed by oasis blur and the stone roses in the early and late 90s. Reform now and let people remember who you were and how good you are. Love the 90s bands real music
Johnny Coolin Let's face it - all we were interested in was The Pixies and a bit of Jane's. I loved all over loop, jesus jones, the weddoes and Nick Cave after that Reading
Thanks for the post - I enjoyed the trip down memory lane. Between 1990-92 Ride were an incredible live band. The Nowhere and Going Blank Again tours were immense, but after the Reading Festival of '92 they lost the celebratory feel. Alan McGhee charts their breakdown in his recent autobiography; it seems Andy and Mark both thought they were the biggest rock star on earth and the overblown egos ruined a wonderful writing team. This performance sums up the dreary mess they had become. Mind you, that Loz couldn't half drum...
I remember watching this on TV was gutted, so disappointed. Ride had been my favourite band a few years previous, and it was tragic to see them slide from being noise-pop dons down to third-division Britpop.
Yep. They hit the hash pipe a little too hard for me with Carnival of Light, although there were a couple of good moments on there, they were in the minority. Although the version of Mouse Trap here is pretty good!
+Hope'sNeverGone They were/are kind of co-lead singers. By the time this record came out, they were getting competitive and started singing their own songs more than sharing them as much. I actually saw them last night, and they don't perform anything after Going Blank Again with the exception of Black Night Crash, and it seemed about 50/50 to me which one was singing lead.
Mark Gardener was the lead singer and rhythm guitarist, Andy Bell was the lead guitarist and backing vocalist AND the main songwriter. Being the main songwriter he wanted more of the limelight (i.e. Mick Jones from Foreigner) and decided to be the lead singer on some of his own songs. That escalated to singing lead vocals on all of his own songs. Which, as you can see on the video above, destroyed the band.
Ride were a product of their time: they spearheaded, in some sense, the incredicble progression of underground Brit psychedelic rock with "Nowhere" and the LP "Today". They were good at playing in their frame of reference: psychedelia, base and drum par EXCELLENCE, and romantic lyrics with guitar spewing goosebump feedback. Their "whole" trumped the sum of the individual parts. But when they decided to be a pop rock band, they failed miserably. Eg, Loz drumming goes to shit because it MUST.
Amazing! I loved ride for the first couple of albums and went to see them, but I was definitely at Glasto '94 and had zero interest in seeing them by then, I think I walked past and crashed out in the acoustic tent or green field or some shit. Let's face it, they turned into walkers very quickly!
Ok I never cared much for oasis so I didn't know they were creation alum. I figured they had to be on Capitol or Electra or some other giant label to get the widespread distro and radio play like they had. I'm not trying to be a douche I'm just stuck in the early 90's
I'm sorry to say it, but here is when RIDE take the wrong way with this kind of rock sound. Missing distortion (search for Brixton Academy gig, 1992). But still love them.
" But ride was on creation records for fuck sake" um, oasis were a creation records band too. money wasn't the draw it was the fact they were ex-label mates and friends, nothing strange in that, regardless of what you think of oasis.
I saw Ride with Lush back in the day. I think it was Mark's birthday. I gave him a leather bracelet and saw him wearing it in the NME afew months later.
That’s so cool!
@@9eyeh8chu9 Thanks! I thought it was
2023 and still love RIDE.....wish this music would come back and grace us
You want a band to keep making the same record over and over again?
What a sad little life you must lead.
120 minutes was how i discovered Ride & a lot of other Amazing alternative bands. Thankfully we had this back in the day!
This music is just the BEST !!!!!!! All the stuff that came out in the early 90's to late 90's - and now there's a bit of a resurgence, though done a bit differently, still potent. Ride, MBV, The Jesus and Mary Chain, and countless others paved the way!
I caught these guys in Sydney in 1992 as part of the going blank again tour. They will be my fave band of all time. They started it for me.
That's cool. I saw them for that same tour!
Thank you. I love Ride. Discovered them in around '91. Don't know how. I live in the US. It's not like they were on the radio. Nope. Way too good for American radio.
Allan Ostermann but they were on mtv
120 minutes
Xan Rosendahl That's right! 120 Minutes ruled. I discovered so many bands through 120 minutes, and I didn't even live in USA, but in the ex-Soviet Union at the time. The minute the MTV was allowed and broadcasted on cable, I was hooked :)

I stayed up past midnight to watch 120 Minutes. Only good thing on MTV...then MTV Raps replaced it, I think. Pissed me off.
My most impressing experiences on 120 Minutes: The Breeders - Cannon Ball; Sloan - Underwhelmed; it was both the sound and the video which was something completely new

Saw them in San Diego last week. Great set. They were simply brilliant and sounded amazing. So glad you're back boys!
Goosebumps. What could have been and thankfully what we still have.
I'm still loving this in 2023!
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa goosebumps all over, every time. Love Ride so much
Like countless others, I come back to watch this performance over and over again, and get utterly and totally inspired. Welcome back, Ride. You are the ones I was waiting for.
Was at this gig and I remember the sound was the best Ive heard at a festival.
+chairmanmeow1973 It surely does sound like you're 100% spot on mate! Envy you being there...
+Cyrus Budd Those Les Pauls sounded great. I hadnt heard Carnival Of Light yet but its one of the most underrated records of the nineties.
I was too..I'm sure it was on the sunday and we were all very chilled and getting stoned..I'm sure spiritulised were on next and oasis played before perhaps..
Amazing. I remember being in this exact crowd. Mark still plays his guitar like that to this day.
Minus the hair.........but still great😉
Unpopular opinion: Carnival of Light is their best record.
I mean that objectively false
Great video, great band, cheers!
I was there. Brilliant.
great live thanks for uploading
They were Great and still ARE ,so sure and confident about what they Like . Keep Going Ride x
Love Ride......
sim eu amo essa banda,
This is a great concert! J'adore...!!!..!!!
Le groupe s'est encore bonifié 16 ans plus tard : maintenant en 2020, leur musique , c'est divin!!!
adoro muito essa banda
andy bell... TOP
OP!
such an under rated band!
Mark Gardener. The perfect avatar for Brit Indie Music circa early 1900s.
I stand by the opinion that Carnival of Light is still one of the best brit pop rock albums of the nineties…it just wasn’t a gazer album
love love love

I was at Glastonbury in 94, didn't even know ride were there! Bit sad to find that out 19 years later, hmpf
OH MY thats the dig out your soul sound!
Leave them all behind is a great track. Saw them at Reading 92 (I think?!) And they were great. Grasshopper - great instrumental
Remember the freedom a bike gave you as a kid as you independently explored your neighbourhood. Just keep that in mind and love riding.
that angle is legendary 14:37
ride what can you say. really. carnival of light is a great lp. shoegazing ok but still as good now as then. check out :from time to time: such a beautiful song.

Best band of the 90's for me
I completely agree with you
ya fucking stupid student!!
You'll be happy to know then that they announced they were reforming yesterday for a tour. They will play Glasgow, Manchester, London, Amsterdam, Paris, Barcelona, Toronto and New York from May-June of 2015
Manchester Perfect!! Thanks Bed Tundy
gonna check tickets now ;-)
Sold out already FFS.How me not know confused.;
they are both great groups
This was one of my favourite tracks from Carnival of Light. Am I the only person who thought that was their best record?
Me too. Was great. But they have ignored it for some reason
Tarantula rules too!!‼️😘😎
My favorite record
Absured that they'd play it down like that. It was when they actually became a real band. Carnival of Light.
Agree.my fave of theirs.
Hard to believe these are the same guys that wrote “nowhere”
Andy Bell himself called Carnival of Light, "Carnival of Shite" in hindsight. I wonder what happened to them after Nowhere and Going Blank Again. Was the hippy-dippy vibe pushed on them by above or did they fall on their own sword with it?
amazing
We had some good bands in Oxford back then.
Andy Dunnock Oxford Rules! Radiohead, Ride, Foals, Gaz and Supergrass from around that part of the world
+Extreme Weather Don't forget Swervedriver.
ride es una buena banda
Well they were huge back in the day.
Ride rules.
You can see Bell slowed the music down from this performance alone. Gardiner and Colbert just want to get their heads down and rock out. See how much they love the faster parts! I enjoyed Carnival of Light but Nowhere and Going Blank Again were better live
安迪贝尔真是又有才华又帅
That comment pictured you really well...
To many great bands like this over shadowed by oasis blur and the stone roses in the early and late 90s. Reform now and let people remember who you were and how good you are. Love the 90s bands real music
A different guitar for each song!
The Junction 2024- What a good night :D

❤️
Like the guy below said long live 1994!
Cool stuff :)
17:41 Mouse trapイントロからかっこいい
I was there.
I saw them in 1990 at Reading. They were probably brilliant, but I couldn't tell, because they were playing in a field.
Johnny Coolin Let's face it - all we were interested in was The Pixies and a bit of Jane's. I loved all over loop, jesus jones, the weddoes and Nick Cave after that Reading

Where can I find the full set? My fav Ride era!!
I'm wondering......what's happend to Mark Gardener's hair?
Stayed in the nineties
I think you mean now? haha, old age and balding...
Ohhh... those "sunglasses"...
I think he stole 'em from the lead singer of Spacehog!
Anybody remembers the songs they played that day?
sweet
What a set.... In their prime..
Man, I love me some Ride...but, I want to stand off-stage and offer Andy and Mark some sandwiches or something. Lads, you gotta eat something.
That was the beauty of the 90s, nobody have a F how they or anyone else looked
Love, love, love ride. So sad they went downhill and then disappeared.
So funny. They're back baby
Wow. This was their best album. More solid songs instead of shoe gaze noise
don't you mean "going blank again"?
Going Blank Again is great too. Depends on whether you like shoegaze or not. I prefer Byrdsian stuff like 1000 Miles
Going Blank Again. My favorite! Accessible but not commercial. "Mousetrap" is brilliant.
I'm hopping so high
If i could be 20 again......
Does anyone know the name of the first song please? Thx in advance.
Birdman
Please tell me 'Magical spring' isn't a piss take..
Mark Gardener has a better voice than Andy Bell I never understood why he wasn't the lead singer :/
+Hope'sNeverGone They were/are kind of co-lead singers. By the time this record came out, they were getting competitive and started singing their own songs more than sharing them as much. omg
What's goin' on at the end?! Hah! ;-)
They were nervous, didn't realize they were RIDE!
A million atoms can’t pretend 😛

Bussarin Boi sounds like you did too love 💖
Ok I never cared much for oasis so I didn't know they were creation alum. I figured they had to be on Capitol or Electra or some other giant label to get the widespread distro and radio play like they had. I'm not trying to be a douche I'm just stuck in the early 90's
your argument against oasis being commercial is that they have more hits than ride? nice one
I love Ride but there is a negative vibe on this or is it my knowing there was friction at the time?
Andy looks noticeably bored playing on the songs he doesn't sing on.
I'm sorry to say it, but here is when RIDE take the wrong way with this kind of rock sound. Missing distortion (search for Brixton Academy gig, 1992). But still love them.
It's a shame that he had to sacrifice being a singer, songwriter, guitarrist...just because Oasis.

My man Andy lookin like Elton John
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏👍👍👍👍‼️‼️‼️‼️
super
Well, if you get this kind of reaction from the audience at Glastonbury, you must be doing something right. But yeah, I prefer the shoegaze, by far.
