- Learn from my mistakes... I was a first time used diesel buyer and I made some mistakes that ended up being pretty expensive. In this video I cover common rust areas to look for, suspension & front end work to look for and also some mistakes I made buying a DPF deleted & straight piped Powerstroke. Hopefully some of you can learn from my mistakes.

Everything that you mentioned are things that you need to look for in every used vehicle purchase, not just a diesel.

Very true, but because of the weight of the diesel engine, front ends wear out faster than a similar gas truck.

@@kyleranderson1948 Yes, an extra $3,000 on top of $25,000 so that you don't have to pay another $25,000 for another vehicle after the first vehicle craps out.
@@WeatherxCalipha like I said it's all subjective read the comment before you wittle your thumbs. 3k on top of a 25k truck is looked at as a waste because you can find a 25k truck in better condition if you are patient and if it's suspension then im not sure how it'll crap out. It's all subjective and person to person. Loose ball joints and nickel and diming wheel bearings or tie rods until the truck dies might be more reasonable for a guy that rides rough roads and will never experience a smooth ride out of a 170k mile vehicle. Better judgment can save yourself a lot and being picky or ignorant can waste more.

Being in the rust belt, you will have rust. There’s no avoiding that.
You could’ve rebuilt your own front end for around $1000. The ball joints are the only job that would really suck. Everything else that was on the list is relatively easy.

Find the company near you that installs utility beds, typically they have brand new takeoffs beds for 12 or 1300 bucks.
Yep. I put a CM brand flat utility bed on my older Chevy 1 Ton and it made the truck look amazing, and a whole lot more functional. It was a dually though, and I don't think flat beds look all that hot on SRW trucks.

Other than the exhaust that stuff applies to all 3/4 and up trucks. Really all trucks, but since heavier trucks all tend to have been used harder, they have a lot of problems in common.
If I lived in the rust belt it would be worth it to me to buy a truck from a southern state. It's not just body rust you to worry about, everything underneath is so exposed. A few hundred for a plane ticket could save you a few thousand. I see car carriers all the time hauling used vehicles from the South to the North, and from the North to the South. Dealers can get northern vehicles cheaper, and people don't always check.

I totally agree with the fact you should know what your buying. I baught a 2005 Ford ranger with the 4.0 V6. I have a 2013 Mazda 6 manual that I absolutely love but I needed a truck. I overlooked so many things on the ranger when I baught it. Granted I only paid 300 dollars for it. I totally ignored the fact it had a hard time starting I thought it may if been the battery. The bed was rusted out which I knew. But after all was said and done I found a joke in the floor board a weak spot in the frame which I had fixed. I put in a new starter a new fuel filter a new thermostat and nee headlights and a new bed. All in all I spent probably 850 on the truck total. I love the little truck. In upstate New York it's really all I need being 19 but my dream truck is a F250 king ranch 6.7. One day I'll get it.

Well…you can look at it one of two ways. You made a mistake, or you made a decision and learned what to to next time. Biggest takeaway is don’t make the same mistake twice 👍
My grandpa had the death wobble on his 2013 f250 and he took it to the Ford dealership and he didn’t pay a dime for it and they replaced the entire front end, he replaced the tires also which was the only thing he paid for, plus they gave him a brand new 2019 F150 loaded to drive while it was being worked on, wound up having I think about $5,000 in replacement parts (excluding the tires) that he didn’t pay a dime for, recommend taking it to a Ford dealership if the death wobble comes back

It’s interesting back in the day when someone drove a diesel it’s because actually worked with it today every kid has one .. In my opinion you get the best for your money when you buy them two years old or 1 year old with 20,000 miles.. you can get a 2019 for example with 40,000 or less miles for 48k . Or a 2015 with 140k . For 39$ they hold value it’s worth adding $100 to your monthly finance and maintain your truck the way it should be from the beginning Or at least closer to less Mile.. I purchased my 2017 F350 6.7 xlt dully with 18,000 miles . At the time it was about a year and a half old I payed 48k now 2021 I could probably get the same amount back I have 48,000 miles .. it’s worth leading the extra money upfront.. diesels for some reason hold amazing value when they’re 7 to 10 years old Best time to sell and if no mechanical problems Basically cost you 10 - 12 k to use a truck for eight years zero issues. Or ride it till the fucking wheels fall off... when you buy these old trucks there a money pit If a motor or something big goes they’re not worth anything put your money into a newer truck the money is there ... I had a 97 12 valve with 400,000 miles Long story short cost me 20 grand to operate the truck for four years I had it. That’s $500 a month you add another 200 a month and you’re in a brand new truck and the resell value is there ... when my motor blew on the 12 valve it was worth shit with 400k truck

Good know to know about the whole front end issue and price! Test drove a 2014 6.7 Powerstroke yesterday and felt like the front end could possibly use an alignment
2017 and up are all aluminum and are highly recommended for road salted areas

I was thinking the same I been welding for quite some time now and when it comes to welding exhaust I’m just okay, can’t do nothing special so I know that shits not easy.

My aunt is giving me her 2012 6.7 it only has 75k on it. I know nothing about diesels. Any tips? I won't be doing any heavy hauling just tools. Might make it a stealth camper
I did the same thing bouth an 06 f350 had 232k miles test drove it felt in love for it on interstate scared the hell out of me, took it to a shop to get alignment and they said brake caliper was fked, but I fixed it now it’s a solid truck. 🤣
Aslo later i looked up the vin number It had 5 owners 🤣
If you are looking for a project and you find one you always wantedand you want to know if you can squirt a little diesel fuel in the throttle body and it pops the low rumble as it turns all the way around then fires of fule only then its a good motor if it has not ran for a long a wile but fires means its not a eather baby and the motor has good conpression and as long as the body and frame has very little rust just a lot of sanding and cleaning and rebuilding of some parts and you can get the truck fro a good price then get it home and start with the frunt end then the hood and finders iner finders

I Talked with a diesel mechanic he said only get the 7.3 not the 6.0 6.4
Emission controls in the late models ruined diesels. What’s interesting is NEW diesels are getting more and more expensive to repair; but this guy had some pretty cheap shortcomings with this truck compared to what I’ve heard about Powerstrokes made after 2007.
Well 2008-10 was the 6.4 which was problem city. The 6.7 is a pretty good engine that was really only plagued with turbo problems in the early years and potentially fuel Injection problems from a wearing cp4 pump
This why diesel owners deleted the emissions system it only does one well and that's break and if you ask me if you want me to drop upwards of 100k on what just rolled of the line E.P.A. or not the emissions system is coming off

Lol the headliner and 1 mirror replacement on my BMW cost more than the repairs you had done already😂. I'm diving in head first on a Super Duty build. I know already it's going to cost me 12K+ not even including labor and other parts.

Honestly it's not that bad. 90% of that you could probably do in your garage yourself. Wouldn't cost as much as you spent. Just the cost of the part labor would be free since you're doing it yourself
Everything you listed except the exhaust has nothing to do with diesel specify, and is something you should check on all used vehicles when buying one. As for the exhaust you would want to check that on diesel or gas to see if they are rusted out. But especially 2007 and later diesels, with DPF and DEP. If its deleted who did the delete? You never mentioned anything involving the motor itself which it something you would really want to check on a used diesel, checking the blow by. If you have a bad motor a new Cummins will cost you 10k just for the motor not including the labor. Checking the turbo, replacing a bad turbo could cost you 3k alone.

Fixing front end etc. is something that comes with the territory. That rust you should have caught. You know where you live
I think that you got a good truck but not sure about the deal. Normally when I buy a used truck I run it through the dealership and ask them to look it over with a fine tooth comb. I spend the next two years getting all of the repair work done.

Basically all used trucks will need front end work
You're just not going to get away from that with a used diesel. The engines are so heavy that it really takes a toll on everything up front. I'm going to have to start replacing pieces of the front end on my 2012 powerstroke soon at 146xxx
I tel u why people thinks it’s an off road truck it can handle the rough roads and wholes in the roads not true it’s like any other vehicle you still need to be careful not to hit bad potholes and stuff people don’t realize off road mean off road meant to drive and trash on soft dirt roads etc. not hard concrete and asphalt

I don't think you're dumb at all. We can all get blinded by 'new truck excitement', and at least you had the presence of mind to realize it and say it out loud on here. How many miles were on that F350 when you bought it? It's a great looking truck notwithstanding the rust part.

What is “bulletproof” means on those ford trucks ?
Bulletproof refers to 6.0 Powerstore. From 2004 - 2007. It has to do with Egr causing head gasket overheating. The only way to remove the heads is to pull off the cab which is 6hr job by the book. And sky is the limit on how many hrs a shop charges. Most challenging part is lifting the cab about a meter up in the air. Mainly held by 7 - 8 bolts so it doesn't have to take a week or a month to pull the cab for experienced shop. I personally love working on them certain things is b'tch perhaps not for the faint of heart. Because it requires you go in blind by feel making sure bolts don't fall off the socket and most likely specialty tools if you cant make your own.

I don't know man 2600 parts and labor that's not bad for a newer truck like that it's something heavy duty it's going to cost more

Perhaps you should have had your "trusted mechanic" inspect the truck BEFORE you bought it!
Either you got a deal on getting the front end fixed or they buy cheap parts back in. Sounds too cheap for everything you listed that was replaced.
Would like to know how the front end held up.

Should of got a 3rd party warranty my boy. I only paid my deductible 100 bucks and they payed 6k 😎

Those 2011 power stroke also eat glow plug tips.
@@LukesGarage I heard things about that, is it the 2011 only or all 6.7s. I just got my fixed from the cp4 and it costed me 13k and 3 months at a ford dealer ☹
@@Ricky90222 It was only for the 2011 model. Sorry to here about tour truck. Ram swapped to the cp4 for 2019. But had so many issues and warranty claims that for 2021 they swapped back to the cp3. And they offer a kit to swap out the 4 for the 3 now for those that want to swap.
Wait until your CP4 high pressure fuel pump goes...if it goes!!!

Yeah you needed a daddy to teach you or go with you before you buy something like a big vehicle. When your young the excitement of you wanting a truck or nice car makes you overlook everything. Damn near so bad it doesn't have to even drive and you will still think it's a good idea lol. I was lucky to have a mechanic as a father so I never really fell for that at dealerships
Learn to fix yourself it saves you thousands. That is probably a 300 dollars in parts.
I’ll be honest, rust is what it is. Not that big of deal unless you’re gonna be hauling a ton of weight in the bed. The frame rusting is way worse
By far engine issues can be way more expensive than suspension or body rust issues.
