  • Here it is everyone 5 reasons why not to buy a diesel truck in 2022. In this video I give the 5 reasons I think you should at least consider before buying a diesel truck including need vs want, fuel cost, emissions issues and more. My 2022 Ford Super Duty f-350 has been great for me but there is more to consider with a diesel vs a gas truck purchase. Enjoy....

Trump was the greatest president of all time, and the election that he rightfully WON in 2020 was stolen. And here we are today. Ford truck prices are up 25-29% the last 3 years. Ram truck prices are up between 32-37% over the last 3 years, and that’s without Dealer markups…base model regular cab trucks cost now what a luxury truck cost 5 years ago. Doesn’t add up. The average price increase is 1.5% per year. The amount truck prices have gone up in the last 3 years, would normally have taken close to 20 years, going by history. Luxury trucks… that’s another topic I don’t even want to get into. Let’s just say the pussification of men is real. Roll down windows and vinyl seats, that’s a truck!

I’ve got two trailer both in the 16,000 range so the diesel is perfect for towing. When I don’t tow it sits. Plus the drw is a pain to park. One thing you didn’t mention is the cost due to the quantity of oil and cost of filters. I wouldn’t work without one.

A couple or few years ago I went hunting for a diesel truck and found a really nice Dodge Ram 2500 with the last of the 5.9 Cummins diesel engine . It the early 2007 . I'm the 3rd owner and it had 135,000 miles on it . I've been a mechanic all my life and have worked on and driven big rigs and trucks . Anyway , I knew what to look for and at when buying a truck . It's been a 5th wheel camper hauler all it's life for rich people until I bought it and it's spotless ! Damn thing looks and drives like new ! I got lucky as I almost gave up looking for my truck . It's the Mega Cab which I like in several ways except it has the turning radius of a dang School bus . But I love my 07 Dodge Ram 2500 Mega Cab 5.9 Cummins diesel truck with extra air bags for more weight . I bought it because the great condition it's in and got a heck of a deal on it plus it will last me till I die , so it's the last vehicle I'll ever buy . If you take care of your truck , it'll take care of you . A Cummins diesel engine will last me a million miles before it's time to rebuild it . It pulls my trailers great and does what I need , so I'm happy . By the way , Cummins is owned by Caterpillar , but they keep the two names and companies separate as both are known and used around the world . So for marketing reasons the kept the 2 names .

There are only three things you need to know about any vehicle:
1 How many fatal crashes per 100 thousand units sold.
2 Stopping distance at cursing speed on a wet road.
    3 Its centre of gravity
Given that most crashes involve a single vehicle. and most single vehicle road fatalities involve rollovers. Its nice to know how prone to rollover a vehicle is. Because your cabin must be able to handle the dead weight of your vehicle when inverted, plus the kinetic energy of the crash: thats IF you want to walk away from a rollover crash.
Given all the above. Any van beats a light truck every day of the week. Light trucks are by far the most dangerous class of vehicles on the road, because they are top heavy, they have a long stopping distance because of their mass, and people tend to drive them like racing cars, which is suicidal.

Also, all those emissions gadgets are a pain in the ass--especially having to put DEF in it where in a gas vehicle--you never have to. Bye, diesels--you were fun at one time, but not anymore. Sad. ☹

Honestly, after some consideration, when it comes time to replace my 2015 RAM 1500, I think I might go with a gas 2500. I was considering a RAM 3500 Cummins HO as my next truck, but I don't want to deal with DEF, DPF, and all the other emissions throughout the warranty period. I'd get the 3500 to get the HO, so I would have the Aisin instead of piece of shit known as the 68RFE. My next truck will likely end up being a F-250 with the 7.3 gas, mostly because its a pushrod V8 and doesn't seem to have any major problems. I'm fine with the limits of a half ton and would get one if they weren't subject to CAFE fuel economy regulations. Three quarter ton trucks simply don't have all the little things to get 0.01 more mpg to raise the CAFE average. Electronic power steering is a big one for me, I simply can't trust those EPS racks after my rack failed *MID DRIVING* on my RAM. I'd much rather have a hydraulic rack, where the chances of it working one minute then shutting completely off the next is very slim.
In my RAM, my electronic rack failed at about 150k miles and I refuse to replace it because of the way it failed. I was simply driving down the road with power steering, then suddenly there was a warning on the cluster that said "Service Power Steering" and it just quit, making my wheel very difficult to turn. Now with the truck at 174k miles, I still haven't replaced the rack and power steering still isn't working. Luckily I was driving straight when the rack decided it was time to die, if it died mid turn, I probably would have crashed. Shortly after my rack failed, I looked it up on several forums and the racks seem to die when they want to. Some make it past 200k miles with no issues, others die at 30k miles. And I've heard of some dying after hitting potholes. I've decided that manual steering on a power steering rack is safer than replacing the rack with one that could fail in the exact same way. And on another note, the steering rack boots are being held on by zip ties instead of a hose clamp, which may indicate the steering rack or the boots have been replaced in the past.

Diesel has unfortunately become a high maintenance girlfriend... seems fun at first but most people will eventually grow tired of it and realize that it's not worth the effort (or money). Diesel engines are a unique upgrade in the sense that they require so much more effort to maintain, on top of being less reliable due to emissions equipment and 3x the cost in service. No other consumer vehicle suffers from anything like this when going for the top performing engine. I'd love for Ford to sell a supercharger or twin turbo option for the 7.3 gasser.

  • @dtom420
    @dtom420 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

Yep, a 2022 diesel isn’t for a sissy boy or city boys. Wait… are they the same person?? 😂 I gotta disagree with your reasoning. Plus, I’m just about to take possession of a ‘22 F350 Platinum Tremor.
    1. If you can afford a diesel truck, you should be able to afford the maintenence and the diesel. Plus, most Godzilla’s I’ve been seeing get worse fuel performance than the stock 6.4. This is going to, in part, offset some of the fuel expense. Plus, oil prices will go back down a fair amount in a couple of years - ESPECIALLY if we elect a energy friendly (read Republican) President in 2024. Once the global Covid panic finally goes away the oil price will go back down a fair amount - unfortunately for someone like me in the oil business. Lol
    2. You even said how responsive your truck is WITH the emissions crap on it RIGHT before you complained about the emissions gear limiting the truck. Lol. A delete is always possible. Although, personally, I’m leaving mine on until a get (at least) near the end of my warranty. If you treat it right until your warranty ends and THEN delete the truck… that truck will last WAY longer than the gasser.
    3. You don’t HAVE to pay through the nose if you go to one of the dealers, like Granger Ford in Iowa, who are letting you order trucks for only like 2% over invoice. I ordered mine for almost $8k BELOW MSRP from Granger. Sure, I gotta fly from South Texas to Des Moines to pick it up but one way tickets are still about $375. 1.95% interest from my local credit union makes the money VERY cheap to borrow. NOW IS THE TIME TO BUY! In another year or so you’ll be lucky to find a 7% interest rate. These two factors make this, actually, a pretty awesome time to buy, imo.
    4. Diesel trucks retain their value much better than gassers. At least here in Texas.
I do agree that buying a diesel if you never tow anything might be kinda silly but given the better value retention, longer service life (generally), the reasonable (imo) mileage for such a large truck, the options they offer (if you decide to get an RV, boat, etc) and all the cool upgrades (like deletes) that are available when you’re ready, I can’t see ANY reason to get a gasser Super Duty. If you need a super efficient and cheap vehicle you shouldn’t be looking a a full size truck, period.
I do love your content but I gotta beg to differ on this one, particular video. God Bless!

I gotta disagree with one thing if you ride out the warranty and then delete your truck the damage is already done 60k-100k miles running that def and egr BS on a new diesel literally eats them from the inside out I would recommend instantly deleting if you buy a new one kinda goes with your other point if you buy a diesel you should be able to cover the cost of deleting it and if it happens to blow up without warranty you should be able to afford the 20k bill to fix it. The new gas motors in these HD trucks aren’t so bad like you make it out to be.

    • @Steadierpark
      @Steadierpark 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Exactly my thoughts except what others have mentioned with fixing the emissions from new. It’s a gamble, but think how long you will be out of a truck if it goes to the dealer and waits for parts. Unless your dealer has HD truck loaners, you will be without a truck that meets your needs and probably in a Mitsubishi car until they get the parts. Best to learn to do your own work and make the truck reliable.

Yes I changed out the POS glow plugs kept up with the coolant ph , did not pull anything over 10,000lbs and yes I was passed going up steep grades, but still getting high teens as a norm. Due to a medical mistake had to give up the 5spd so went to research a new tow rig. Ended up ordering a 2021 F250 due to the problems Ram and GM were having with their engines with their on demand engine fuel management systems. which turned into a 2022 model do to the component shortages. I still wanted the power and torque of the diesel but without the added maintenance down the road which is why I ordered it with the new 7.3 and 4.30 elock in the rear. All the towing capacity I need minus the 10,000 dollar option, just my 2 cents.

He was explaining to me the whole def fluid thing and how he forgot to refill it and he ran out on his way home so he limped the last few miles going 5 mph because the truck’s computer won’t allow it to go any faster. Ridiculous. And the price of diesel is considerably higher than gas these days. Our contractor told me if he had to do it over again he would have gotten the truck with a gas engine instead. They sound like a major pain in the ass and most people don’t need to 1000+ pound/ft of torque these new diesels provide these days. Plus it takes 10 quarts just to do an oil change. That’s also nuts. Seems as though most consumers would be better off with a gas engine in these trucks.

It's really much more simplistic than most people make it out to be. If you're into towing frequently, then by all means, buy a diesel. They have far more torque, and are ideal for towing---this especially includes you trailer-towing crowd. But if all you do is haul loads in the back of your truck (or nothing at all), there's no reason for you to own a diesel--the increased cost of maintenence offsets the mpg gains

I guess it depends on what your pulling unless your pulling 15,000-40,000lbs no need to go to a diesel. I got a 80gal tank in a v10 motorhome probably weighs 20,000lbs and haven't had any problems going up mountains roads driving across the country.
It would cost me at least $100 more to fill my tank if I had a diesel. That adds up if your going cross country.

IMHO, the EGR is the dumbest thing on earth, putting hot exhaust back to the intake is flat stupid. 5he DEF is another dumb idea, while I get it. Def is to stopbkack soot out the tail pipe, and all the knuckleheads who think it funny to "roll coal" ruined it for the rest of us. I knew a guy years ago, who could tune a Diesel for max power & no black smoke. Where I live, majority of trucks have been deleted, and have been properly tuned. But thanks to the over reach of the brain dead at the epa. I'm stuck with all that crap on my truck

Just stumbled across your page and love the truck brother. You should do a video for us newbies. I’m interested in owning a diesel but don’t know much about them at all. Maintaining, the little tips and tricks, adding the additive when you fuel them, etc. I think that’s something that would be very beneficial for newbies like me. Just a suggestion.

If you look back I’m sure he’s done a few videos on different topics that you mentioned. I’m not sure what they’re titled but should be anything with the F350 in them. They’re probably a bit more spread out that way but it’ll give you an excuse to binge a little. But your suggestion is definitely a good one though. Have all the basics wrapped up in one video.

I will never unverstand americans ,
Its the most stupid Thing to buy a petrol Pickup/SuV .
A Diesel Pickup with 3.0 Turbo Diesel Engine should run 10 KM/Liter . Average and less.
The Argument with maintenance is Bullshit.
The Injectors should work 200000 Kilometres at least but ive seen ones with 300000 kms and more with The first injectors.
On the other Hand, a petrol powered pickup drives avg 6 km/Liter and needs every 60000 KM new Spark Plugs .
The Diesel engine has much higher Torque on low RPM.
I have an Audi A4 2.5 TDI V6 it accelerates from 900 RPM 🤣, i didnt believe it i can drive 40 km/h in 6th gear and accelerate without dropping a gear. The Petrol engine needs more RPM in General . Ive seen Videos of a Ford F150 going uphill in 2nd Gear at 5000 RPM where a Diesel wouldve needed 1500 RPM . And they were fascinated by The Ford F150 with The 3.5 turbocharged V6 Ford F150 how it got uphill with ONLY 3500 RPM🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 ONlY . Im curious Tho how they wouldve reacted if they saw a proper Diesel Pickup going uphill with a Trailer attached at 1500 RPM . I had an Audi Q7 with 3.0 TDi and i have used it to tow cars on a Trailer. In worst case it shifted one gear down uphill and was then at 2200 RPM .

But they are not sold here. So I have to stick to my 2.8 diesel. Ok it's not got the same power as a big lump. But it will do well over 700 miles on a full tank. What does a T/full cost me well around $65. Cheap as chips.
