@russianskatingfan you know one of the two mistakes i'm faulting miller on is her landing with one foot in front of the other, which Lysenko also does, right? Lysenko had a visible break in her opening planche as well. While I don't debate the final standings, I do take issue with the way these routines were overall scored. BTW I do believe you are somewhat clouded by your antipathy of Miller: this routine by Miller is incredibly clean.

Not really. Because for everyone who tries to argue that the judges "favor" the Soviets, there is another who tries to argue that they "favor" the Americans. The reality is, the judges are human beings and with an imperfect code they sometimes just get things wrong. Shannon Miller's score was fair (and to be honest slightly overscored because she took a step on the landing which is at least a .1 deduction), but Lu Li was overscored as well here (her routine was clearly not as difficult as Miller's yet scored the same). So does that mean the judges were favoring the Chinese? Were they trying to screw over the American? No. It just means they were too liberal on their scores with the first athlete, and didn't expect several more later to be superior.
Miller was way underscored. Lyssenko 100% deserved the title, but I do think Shannon's 9.912 was too low. I saw only one or two tiny breaks - should have been at least a 9.925.
Can anyone tell me why gymnasts today don't ever do 4 acrobatic elements along the beam? Is it because the body shape of the girls has changed? Sorry if I'm asking a stupid question, I just always wondered as I saw several do the 4 in the 1996 Olympics but haven't seen any do them since.
@russianskatingfan Im not pointing my fingers at anyone's fans, only the judges. The "mistakes" i refer to are tiny balance checks that are honestly only visible during the slow mo replays. Whether you like or dislike Miller, you must admit that this routine incredibly clean. I think this routine is quite underscored, and I dont say this because Im a fan of anyone, I say this because it puts into question the scoring across the board.
Miller's score on beam was a crying shame, and a real head-scratcher--especially in comparison with her AA routine. The crowd booing is 💯 % accurate. The silver should have been hers alone.
It was an era where scoring was insanely biased. The Unified team and Romania had the judging in the bag between them. It’s a huge reason I’m glad the 10 system is long gone.
@@thesovgc the only reason for that one is it would have been so blatantly obvious they were biased it would have sparked a massive outcry and likely investigation into corruption if she hadn’t won. Her routine was as smooth and effectively performed as it could possibly be. If there’d been even the tiniest miscue I suspect she’d have finished second. Milosovic had a couple of small form breaks that weren’t accounted for so… not like her floor routine but still.
Her AA routine was OVERscored thouogh. Her event finals one might have been underscored but if you are comparing to her AA that isn't really accurate as she never deserved the score she got in the AA with 2 big wobbles. The only reason she came as close to winning the AA as she did was she outscored Gutsu on beam in the AA when she didn't deserve to at all.
No, it really shouldn't have. Not if they were judging correctly. She took a step on the dismount (which is a .1 deduction). She was actually overscored because her routine should have gotten no higher than 9.900 with the step on the landing. Lu Li was overscored as well (as Shannon clearly had a more difficult routine), and Lysenko clearly had the best routine of the three.
I still laugh that some people say Boginskaya should've knocked out Lu li or Miller off the podium with her routine😂. What a great routine from Miller too. Well deserved silver she earned.
Boginskaya did not deserve to beat Miller, but I don't see how her beating Lu Li is far fetched at all. Her routine was certainly harder. Lu Li had to have the easiest routine in the whole finals, can't believe she tied for silver. She did it perfectly, but too basic for an event finals routine. It reminds me of Gogean and her medal in 96.
I don’t see how boginskaya’s routine is more difficult than Lu li’s at all. The only difference I see is that boginskaya has a front tuck mount. But Lu li has a not-easy mount as well. And the judges simply didn’t ignore bogin’s form on her dismount
@ViardotVSGrisi I also take issue with how the routines were scored. Lysenko should have had a 10, and Boginskaya deserved atleast as high a mark as both Miller and Lu. The crowd booed Boginsakaya's score louder than Miller or Lu's so seem to agree. Have a nice day.
People complain so much about the current scoring method but scoring was far too liberal and indiscriminate in these days. They handed out high scores like it was going out of style. Certain people were overscored and others underscored far too often.
Bogi had good difficulty on beam, despite her critics. She was one of few gymnasts in the top three teams mounting with something risky. She normally connected it to a double stag jump (not done in finals). FF two layouts is ok, gainer layout, nothing too exciting there. But she always stuck her dismount. I would say had she not bobbled here a tie for silver was fair.
Looking back it’s pretty clear Miller deserved a silver alone for beam, I would have put lu behind boginskaya who should have gotten bronze but ce la vi. Lysenko was clearly the best, no breaks other than minor form issues that everyone else had, difficulty second only to Miller, best artistry and rhythm, originality etc.
I wonder if Miller had just watered down her routine by dropping the Miller element and changed the full in into the simple double back (like Lysenko) would she have scored 9.95 or more and tied for gold ??? Her difficulty was higher than any other gymnast in the final.
Probably since she wouldn't have had the small breaks she had on both. But she wouldn't have done that as no gymnast goes in strategically trying for less content than they are capable of. Miller did not know how the final would be performed, and if it might have been stronger than it was, in which she may have needed those skills and hit perfectly.
In the uneven bars, not really. Her bars composition there wasn’t as crisp as the two ahead of her. On beam? I can’t disagree. In the AA final? Without question.
