So it logical that there will be a active discussion and healthy debate. It is a good thing that we have cardinals that want to be pope. Let it be known that I do empathize with your concern that a pope shouldn't place the art of politics above the core of his faith. That said, it's pretty naive to expect nothing political from him. The Church should not bend to the politics of the outside world (in either direction), but The Truth within the Church illuminates the entire field of politics, on a wide range of issues, from unjust wars to abortion to workers rights to climate change to gender politics. The Truth will have its say, and it falls into neither popular camp.

Both were considered popular candidates, but in comparison to the rest of the Cardinals elevated by St. John Paul II they were dark horses for the papal office. Both show and have shown immense humility and desire to maintain the unity of the Catholic faith.

Also, with perhaps with the exception of the election of Ratzinger, when has any speculation about who the next Pope will be ever turned out to be correct? I met Cardinal Schönborn once. I lived in Vienna and was passing by the front of St. Stephen's Kirche. There were a bunch of people around but nobody but me recognized him. I went right up to him, kissed his ring and talked to him for about 10 minutes. I can't speak to how good of a pope he would be. But he was extremely friendly and generous with his time ... not a bad start.
He has some health issues.

Well said. A difficult situation in a liberal Pope.....very slippery slope that can threaten or erode orthodoxy, conservative principles, and traditional meanings in the Catholic faith. Numbers have it that voting Cardinals appointed by Pope Francis could be at least 75% to 80%. One should see clearly how very liberal instructions issued by Pope Francis result in manifestos and opinions of direct opposition from priests and bishops. Unrests like that might not be different even if liberal directives should come from a synod with a majority of liberal Cardinals. The conservatives may be the voice in the mountains that the traditional faithful will listen to and follow.

Well, not exactly. Do you think it was wrong for Pope John Paul II to denounce communism? He is credited with expediting the end of that system in Europe. When the faith speaks of justice, a pope is obligated to address unjust political systems.
When the political activities run counter to our Catholic beliefs, I believe that such as communism and abortion should be condemned. We should not stick our finger in the air and move away from scripture for the whim of the day.

A young cardinal from New York, Lenny Belardo, becomes pope of the Catholic Church when the leading contenders of the Papal conclave fail to win election. Installed as a compromise candidate, Belardo takes the name of Pius XIII and immediately proceeds to challenge the established traditions and practices of the Vatican. In one of his first acts, he decrees that common people are not worthy to gaze upon the Pope's face and appears to a crowd in St. Peter's Square shrouded in darkness. Next, during a meeting with the Cardinal Secretary of State, the Pope states he will now become directly involved in the political affairs of the Vatican, effectively assuming control of the Secretariat of State of the Holy See.
Alarmed by his radical changes to the church, several senior cardinals begin a plan to try and control the Pope and assuage him from even more dangerous ideas to the church. In response, the Pope installs Sister Mary, the nun who raised him in an orphanage, to serve as his chief adviser and publicly denounces several cardinals. He likewise threatens to confiscate all the property of various religious orders, in particular the Franciscans, if they do not accept his unquestioned leadership. Following this, the Pope directs that the Papal tiara be removed from a museum and returned to the Vatican as his personal crown.
In a last ditch effort to rein in the Pope, the cardinals arrange a meeting with the Prime Minister of Italy who is subsequently bullied by the Pope and threatened with an archaic papal procedure allowing the Church to direct Italians for who they should cast their votes in local elections.
@@jeannehall6546 He can't vote in the conclave - but he CAN be elected pope. There is no age restriction on that. Although, personally, I think a younger one would be better.

What about cardinal burke
Won't be elected by the other cardinals. Burke is considered too outspoken/controversial and essentially lost his rights as a cardinal due to publicly speaking against Pope Francis.
