Peace to all. This is a wonderful explanation of, in my opinion, the most powerful Psalm. The Miserere is such a powerful piece. As an Orthodox Christian, we pray Psalm 50 daily in our morning prayers. The Latin version brings the power of David's repentance forward for all to share. To my Catholic brothers, I wish you a wonderful Holy Week. Pray for us sinners of both traditions so we may pray together. Forgive me, a sinner, as God forgives. Peace to all.

This piece was made famous by the fact that it was only sung by the Sistine Chapel Schola for the first hundred or so years after it was written. It ended up leaking out when a 14 year old boy named Wolfgang was present in the Sistine Chapel, probably for Tenebrae, and afterward transcribed it from memory. I believe that the Pope was quite amused by this. Anyway, it adds to the piece’s mystique. It is so beautiful, as is all of the pre-1955 Holy Week Office.

@@Awakeningspirit20The Church does not reject you, Jesus is the Head of the Church and in His wisdom He chose men to be fishers of men and to preach His Holy Word. All of us are sinners but if we approach Our Lord with a contrite and sincere heart He will show us His mercy and count us amongst His children, in His Church the spotless Bride of Jesus, the Groom. God hears our prayers and He does not reject a contrite heart as shown in Psalm 50. Go to confession, it is a Holy Sacrament and a source of infinite grace, necessary for our salvation. Pax Christi. In the 1950’s I don’t recall ever hearing music like this. But I do recall when we went to confession on Saturday afternoon, with sun streaming in the western windows, I could enjoy the scent of candle wax and incense. These holy odors were more pronounced when the church was not as full. Still remember that as a sacred odor. As always, except for Good Friday., the candle in its red globe was lit. I still look for that candle first whenever I enter any Catholic Church.

I have long known of this piece, one of the most famous of the Renaissance. It particularly moved Mozart who heard it in St. Peter's. I never paid much attention to the text, so what a pleasant surprise (but not so surprising) to discover it is Psalm 50. As an Orthodox Christian it is very familiar. We recite it daily in our morning prayers -- it is also part of the 3rd Hour and Compline.

The story I've heard is that the exact composition was a closely guarded secret by the liturgists in the Vatican. Mozart heard it performed, once, he went back to where he was staying and wrote the whole thing down perfectly. There was no putting that cat back in the bag. Thanks to Mozart we can all now enjoy this piece.

Allegri's Miserere Mei is truly one of the greatest works of sacred music. To hear a recording of the Miserere is truly a moving experience; to hear it live in a liturgical setting is beyond description.
I have been blessed to sing Tenebrae with my choir since 2011. The Allegri at the end of each night of Tenebrae is perhaps the thing most anticipated by both the choir and the congregation. It is so moving; it is so powerful. The first time I sang the Allegri, I struggled to maintain my composure as I was truly moved to tears. This year, when I finally was invited to sing the Choir II part, I felt overwhelmed by the amazing awesomeness of this composition.

I have CDs of Miserere and just love listening to this sacred music. At one time, it was only sung in the Sistine Chapel during Holy Week but today it's for all...first heard about The Tallis Scholars and Miserere by Dave Matthews.

Beautiful! I've served in music ministry for 45 years, and I've never heard this piece before! We only sang in latin rarely - for ordinations, and when I had the opportunity to sing as part of an Archdiocesan Choir which was created for a Papal Mass. I like Gregorian Chant and enjoy the challenge, but I couldn't handle just Gregorian Chant.

Properly speaking this isn’t Gregorian chant - it is polyphonic chant. Gregorian chant is actually meant to be quite easy. Polyphony is just taking it and making ultra fancy.

‘Tenebrae’ is always in the plural, but has a singular meaning, so it’s ‘darkness’, not ‘darknesses’.

How is it that at age 66, 27-28 years after becoming Catholic, this is the first time that I am aware of hearing this marvelous piece of art? I've known Psalm 50/51 for most of my life, but I have never heard this!!!
