Hello Jessica, I want to compliment you on your 4 hour long sweater tutorial. I bought your pattern but have not yet bought the yarn. I discovered you just today. I have knitted off and on for years, mostly beanies, scarves and berets that I felt. I made a sweater for my husband about 6 years ago but that was with a knitting teacher. She is a wonderful person but your video tutorial (that can be stopped and repeated as much as one would want) is the most outstanding piece of instruction I have ever seen. You explain why something is done like short rows and show live how it is done. I finally understand it and I love how you showed that it could be done in two areas. I looked at your blog and appreciate your explanation of prewashed versus normal wool. Even though I have never been attracted to prewashed wool, I like to know the logic behind choices. I love your sweaters and bought two patterns. I would love a vest pattern since I live in San Antonio and it gets cold enough for a full sweater only rarely (I want a vest that does not go hang over the shoulders). I have looked at many patterns, some translated from German and Norwegian but there is still a lack of clarity for me. I know I have a calculation to pick size if gauge is diff than pattern.Then the next issue is calculating yardage.

Thank you for such detailed video. so far the only thing i had trouble with was the very end of the German twisted cast on, but i did check out several other peoples explaining and doing well with that. i have a sport wt yarn and i'm on the collar yet and my stitches still seem loose, my guage was spot on with a 4/2 needles. using the #2 for the collar/ribbing. i am excited to make this.

Honestly the alternating cable cast on is in my opinion the best for sweater ribbing, neck and body. It had a very beautiful finish and sets you up perfectly for both 1x1 and 2x2 rib can't beat it 😊
I finally feel like I can step up my knitting game! I've only every used straight knitting needles in my life, and I never really understood how to measure myself when applying a knitting pattern. I usually just choose a number and hope for the best (i.e. 42 stitches for mittens, even though I never measured it, I tried it one time, it worked, I was happy). But eyeballing can only take you so far, like maybe you can make a scarf hat and mittens, but that's about it. And OMG I've been such a slow knitter! I've only just realised how fast continental knitting is and I'm still getting the hang of it. Your videos are so helpful!

Gosh i already have 2 sweaters and a poncho on my needles but know i want to make this one too . I am fairly confident in my top down sweater knitting but even so your tutorial was great. Good morning. I just purchased the pattern instructions for this sweater. I have a couple of questions for you. By the way, I really thought your video was great. My question are, can a turtle neckline be used for this sweater? And how difficult would that be to do? I'm not a very experienced knitter. My very favorite neckline is turtle neckline. I have searched and searched for a pattern I felt confident enough to try to make. I found some sport weight yarn among my mom's collection, and she is no longer with us to ask her for help, so I'm turning to you if you could help me. Magic loop knitting is confusing when you're first learning to knit. Knitting on dpn or smaller circular needles is better. I'm an experienced knitter and I hate magic loop knitting. Even after all these years, I still get turned around-back and forth trying to do it this way. Love the video.
Is it possible to add the captions please. I've been searching for a top down jumper for a friend and this looks so professional. But to be honest while you have an extremely sweet gentle voice it's actually quite a problem for me as many other who suffer with hearing loss. Please please tell don't think that this is criticism it's the exact opposite. I just am amazed at the look, the fit etc it's looks more like a bought jumper than a handmade. Thank You in advance
I have difficulty following along to videos without captions as well, but there's an option on this video for subtitles next to the settings button!! You just have to click on it to turn it on and off :)
When I lengthen my sleeves, I simply keep knitting after finishing the decreases until I reach my desired length. I usually only add 1 or 1.5 inches. If you want to add more length than that, add some of the length before beginning the decreases and the remainder after working the decreases.

Hello! I haven't watched through the entire video yet, but it seems very thorough and informative so far. I think it will help me a lot when trying to knit my first sweater (I mainly crochet). I heard it is bad practice to buy your yarn first and find a pattern second, and yet that is what I have ended up doing. How much trouble will I be in if I attempt to knit this sweater (or possibly My Fletching) with DK instead of Sport yarn? I also only have 1,260 yards of DK yarn, when the sizing for Woodsmoke states I'll need 1580 yards of sport yarn. I have a feeling you will tell me I'm better off buying yarn actually fit for the pattern... but it doesn't hurt to ask! I'm excited to knit this sweater! Even if it takes a bit longer to get started than I would like haha
You’ll be in quite a bit of trouble trying to swap in DK instead of sport. First of all, it will be very difficult to achieve gauge, which will mess up all the sizing. If you were an experienced knitter and comfortable doing the math, you could adjust the pattern to your gauge. But given that you are not an experienced knitter, I would encourage you to leave that for later when you have more knitting experience. Getting the right weight of yarn will make this experience much easier for more enjoyable for you. I would encourage you to get sport weight yarn for this sweater, and you can use your DK weight yarn for your next sweater.
@@JessicaMcDonaldKnits Thanks for the reply! That's what I was expecting, but not what I was hoping for haha. I have found a different pattern for the dk cotton yarn I have. I think I will at least attempt it first (it does have colorwork, which is something I've never done with knitting, so we'll see how far I get), if I'm having too much trouble, I'll probably swap. To be honest, I'm expecting to have to swap, but for some reason I just have to try and see if I can do it first. Regardless, I will definitely knit one of your sweater patterns. 1, I like the look of them, and 2, it only feels right to me, with how helpful this video has already been, and with you replying here. I really appreciate it as a novice knitter. I think I will get wool yarn as well, for a warmer sweater.
I've been working up the courage to finally start this pattern, my first sweater. I've already watched the video in its entirety. I am quite intimidated by magic loop, and I'm wondering if I could work on DPNs in stead.
give magic loop a try. hey if it isn't your cup of tea then frog/tink it. i am not a skilled knitter by no means and for quite some time i'm hearing about doing socks with ML, i was scared to death to even go down that rabbit hole. but after watching many videos of so many people doing it, i give it a go and it is not as scary as it seems, you basically cast on your stitches, and split them in half, how do you know what end is what? well, i put a stitch marker on my first stitch the best i can, then your going in a circle but up one edge, down the other then your back to the beginning. i also use the chiaogoo red lace cords they have very good bending ability. i say, if i can do it, i'm sure anyone can. i have been practicing my german twisted cast on, it took me 4 days to get it and about 5 different videos of other people showing because i couldn't see the last part. you don't know if you like it till you try. DPNs on a sweater though? how is that possilbe? i know they are good for cuffs and small things never heard of a whole sweater. like i said, i'm not very skilled.
Quick question instead of using sport yarn can you use worsted weight or super wash yarn for this beginner top down sweater project. Hope you see this.
I tend to knit tighter when I knit smaller circular items, like sleeves, than the larger body areas. I really need to use a larger size needle for sleeves.
Great tutorial, though not clear on gauge...your pattern lists 24 sts/4inch....you counted 18.5...? then not explained what needle size used....a bit confusing ....but very well explained on other parts....thanks so much...
she mentioned that the rows don't matter as much because (for this specific sweater pattern) she gives the instructions to measure in/cm rather than by how many rows you have when you're working on the project for other projects, depending on the instructions, it may be better to have the same or similar stitches for gauge Hope this helps some of the confusion because it took me a while to process as well

As I’m sitting knitting and watching, I was measuring the hat. I had been measuring from under the needle not the stitches on the needle. I noticed that you measured from the top (?) of the needle. That would be helpful to insert the explanation. I’ve been doing it ‘my way’ 😂 for quite some time.
Dear Jessica, I bought your Woodsmoke pattern on Ravelry and I've been trying to fallow your paper and video instructions. However I'm having a hard time with the numbers. I finished my gauge needle size 7 came out good. measured upper chest (42" adding 4" to get 46"). German twisted cast on you picked (60); is this number for the baby size you are making? what is my German twisted cast on? What is Yarn (2, 2, 2, 3, 3, 3,) etc. mean? Are you talking about how many skeins we need? I knitted a sweater a few years back and I've been knitting a few shawls lately. I consider myself a beginner, but able to read knitting patterns. If you can help me I'd be very grateful. Thank you, love your work:)
yes, she cast on 60 stitches for the baby size, 3 months old. on page 2, your first paragraph says Sizes. so for instance your making a size 3 month old, your using the first number in each size through out the pattern. if your going to go up to a size 34, your going to use the 11th number in each set of instructions through out the pattern. go and circle the corresponding numbers through so you don't get confused. Jessica blacked out all the other ones so not to get confused, you could do that too. also the German twisted cast on is a streachy cast on good for sweaters, there is many videos for how to do it. i watched several and found "the crazy sock lady" to be most helpful. Jessica does have a video too. the yarn (2,2,2,3)is the skien/hanks you need of the brand Harrisville Designs Flywheel, color Granite. then below that she has how many yards or meters if you choose another brand. i hope you find this helpful.

I have searched and searched for a pattern I felt confident enough to try to make. I found some sport weight yarn among my mom's collection, and she is no longer with us to ask her for help, so I'm turning to you if you could help me.

Magic loop knitting is confusing when you're first learning to knit. Knitting on dpn or smaller circular needles is better. I'm an experienced knitter and I hate magic loop knitting. Even after all these years, I still get turned around-back and forth trying to do it this way. Love the video.
i had that issue when i first tried magic loop. i'm better, i put a marker at the first stitch

Is it possible to add the captions please. I've been searching for a top down jumper for a friend and this looks so professional. But to be honest while you have an extremely sweet gentle voice it's actually quite a problem for me as many other who suffer with hearing loss.
Please please tell don't think that this is criticism it's the exact opposite. I just am amazed at the look, the fit etc it's looks more like a bought jumper than a handmade.

Such a great video!! I learned several new methods. Had a question, where & how would you increase the length of the sleeves?
When I lengthen my sleeves, I simply keep knitting after finishing the decreases until I reach my desired length. I usually only add 1 or 1.5 inches. If you want to add more length than that, add some of the length before beginning the decreases and the remainder after working the decreases.

Hello! I haven't watched through the entire video yet, but it seems very thorough and informative so far. I think it will help me a lot when trying to knit my first sweater (I mainly crochet).
I heard it is bad practice to buy your yarn first and find a pattern second, and yet that is what I have ended up doing. How much trouble will I be in if I attempt to knit this sweater (or possibly My Fletching) with DK instead of Sport yarn? I also only have 1,260 yards of DK yarn, when the sizing for Woodsmoke states I'll need 1580 yards of sport yarn.
I have a feeling you will tell me I'm better off buying yarn actually fit for the pattern... but it doesn't hurt to ask!

You’ll be in quite a bit of trouble trying to swap in DK instead of sport. First of all, it will be very difficult to achieve gauge, which will mess up all the sizing.
If you were an experienced knitter and comfortable doing the math, you could adjust the pattern to your gauge. But given that you are not an experienced knitter, I would encourage you to leave that for later when you have more knitting experience.
Getting the right weight of yarn will make this experience much easier for more enjoyable for you. I would encourage you to get sport weight yarn for this sweater, and you can use your DK weight yarn for your next sweater.

I have found a different pattern for the dk cotton yarn I have. I think I will at least attempt it first (it does have colorwork, which is something I've never done with knitting, so we'll see how far I get), if I'm having too much trouble, I'll probably swap. To be honest, I'm expecting to have to swap, but for some reason I just have to try and see if I can do it first.
Regardless, I will definitely knit one of your sweater patterns. 1, I like the look of them, and 2, it only feels right to me, with how helpful this video has already been, and with you replying here. I really appreciate it as a novice knitter. I think I will get wool yarn as well, for a warmer sweater.

I've been working up the courage to finally start this pattern, my first sweater. I've already watched the video in its entirety. I am quite intimidated by magic loop, and I'm wondering if I could work on DPNs in stead.
give magic loop a try. hey if it isn't your cup of tea then frog/tink it. i am not a skilled knitter by no means and for quite some time i'm hearing about doing socks with ML, i was scared to death to even go down that rabbit hole. but after watching many videos of so many people doing it, i give it a go and it is not as scary as it seems, you basically cast on your stitches, and split them in half, how do you know what end is what? well, i put a stitch marker on my first stitch the best i can, then your going in a circle but up one edge, down the other then your back to the beginning. i also use the chiaogoo red lace cords they have very good bending ability. i say, if i can do it, i'm sure anyone can. i have been practicing my german twisted cast on, it took me 4 days to get it and about 5 different videos of other people showing because i couldn't see the last part. you don't know if you like it till you try. DPNs on a sweater though? how is that possilbe? i know they are good for cuffs and small things never heard of a whole sweater. like i said, i'm not very skilled.
Quick question instead of using sport yarn can you use worsted weight or super wash yarn for this beginner top down sweater project. Hope you see this.
I tend to knit tighter when I knit smaller circular items, like sleeves, than the larger body areas. I really need to use a larger size needle for sleeves.

Great tutorial, though not clear on gauge...your pattern lists 24 sts/4inch....you counted 18.5...? then not explained what needle size used....a bit confusing ....but very well explained on other parts....thanks so much...
I was also confused by this. Great video but definitely got confused by that discrepancy.
she mentioned that the rows don't matter as much because (for this specific sweater pattern) she gives the instructions to measure in/cm rather than by how many rows you have when you're working on the project
for other projects, depending on the instructions, it may be better to have the same or similar stitches for gauge

As I’m sitting knitting and watching, I was measuring the hat. I had been measuring from under the needle not the stitches on the needle. I noticed that you measured from the top (?) of the needle. That would be helpful to insert the explanation. I’ve been doing it ‘my way’ 😂 for quite some time.

Dear Jessica, I bought your Woodsmoke pattern on Ravelry and I've been trying to fallow your paper and video instructions. However I'm having a hard time with the numbers. I finished my gauge needle size 7 came out good. measured upper chest (42" adding 4" to get 46"). German twisted cast on you picked (60); is this number for the baby size you are making? what is my German twisted cast on? What is Yarn (2, 2, 2, 3, 3, 3,) etc. mean? Are you talking about how many skeins we need? I knitted a sweater a few years back and I've been knitting a few shawls lately. I consider myself a beginner, but able to read knitting patterns. If you can help me I'd be very grateful. Thank you, love your work:)

yes, she cast on 60 stitches for the baby size, 3 months old. on page 2, your first paragraph says Sizes. so for instance your making a size 3 month old, your using the first number in each size through out the pattern. if your going to go up to a size 34, your going to use the 11th number in each set of instructions through out the pattern. go and circle the corresponding numbers through so you don't get confused. Jessica blacked out all the other ones so not to get confused, you could do that too. also the German twisted cast on is a streachy cast on good for sweaters, there is many videos for how to do it. i watched several and found "the crazy sock lady" to be most helpful. Jessica does have a video too.
the yarn (2,2,2,3)is the skien/hanks you need of the brand Harrisville Designs Flywheel, color Granite. then below that she has how many yards or meters if you choose another brand. i hope you find this helpful.

If the reccommended needle size for my yarn is 4mm, is that the guage size or do I need to get two sizes bigger (4.5mm) for the guage?
The recommended needle size is the one you use to get gauge. Then you go down two sizes for the ribbing.
