One year only styling after the tri-fives. When cars were classy and the interiors were colorful works of art. Great choice Lou, great job Mr.Nagel with your baby. Looks stunning!

The A/C was inoperable. The belt was laid on loose for looks at first, then taken off before engine was started. I wonder if it was due to a bad compressor or clutch, because if the compressor pulley will freewheel then you can leave the belt on even if the A/C system is inoperable.

The 1958 was one of my favorites as far as BelAirs & Impalas. And as I’ve said before, this is a rolling work of art. When American pride, craftsmanship, and design ruled the road & and the automotive industry globally. Thanks Lou and Ken for a great spring Saturday morning treat!

Competitive model to the newly released Edsel. Touted as one truly new car for 58 to set the owner above the look alike cars. But Chevrolet took the sales honors and would soon release the 409 engine package with a very distinctive idle burbling sound.
Great work Lou,, just the best!

One of the really great things about your videos you have a lot of cars and the details to go with them that I have never seen. Another great video Lou. Beautiful 58 Impala. My Aunt and Uncle had a Red 58 Impala convertible just like it bought it used in 1962. It was a tri power car also. but no continental kit. They traded it in on a new 1966 Chevy Chevelle SS 396 4 speed. The dealership gave them 500 dollars trade in for the Impala convertible. The dealers said that was all the car was worth.

Another great presentation, Lou! Lee Iacocca once said that air conditioning and stereo killed the convertible in 1976. "Neither one makes sense if you're driving around without a roof," he said. So I can only imagine how rare in 1958 a convertible with air conditioning was! Even the 1957 Bonneville, which boasted being fully optioned, issued very few examples with air conditioning.

Indeed they are. Just about any 50's convertible with factory AC is a rare car. I have a '57 Ford "Skyliner", the retractable hardtop. And it is factory AC. I have yet to witness another and the only ones I've heard of are selling for big money fully restored at high tier auctions.

This has to be the most option loaded 1958 Chevrolet Impala I have seen so far. It has every possible option on it. The 348 engine sounds healthy, and the Roman Red paint job makes this example stand out in the crowd. 1958 was an odd year, and with it being a one year only car, that's why they are so extremely rare. What a beautiful convertible this one is. You sure know how to find some awesome cars Lou! Keep it up!

@@loucostabile You'd likely be amazed at the various vehicles that I/we have restored over the last 30+ years. One being a 1953 Daimler roadster. Two identical 1937 Ford Phaeton convertibles. Both dark green. One was 100% stock and the other had a J2 Oldsmobile engine and more modern drivetrain, brakes, etc. I/we bought an all options red/black 1970 LS6 Chevelle SS convertible that had 34k miles on it. I/we bought it from an estate auction for $30k. It didn't need much to restore it. 6 months later, we sold it to Reggie Jackson (former MLB player) for $80k. He later sent it through auction in Scottsdale AZ and sold it for $130k.

Hi, Lou! 1958 was a recession year when all U.S. brands except Rambler suffered major sales losses. Chevrolet was not immune, but with the Impala, it was the birth of what would shortly thereafter become the best-selling car in America for many years hence. I don't know if Chevy brass knew what a goldmine it was going to be for them, but it was certainly no accident. I think it was simply the concept of a stylish and luxurious car for the price of a Chevrolet that made it such a great buy.
In its first year, the Impala was a sub-series within the Bel Air range offered only in two-door hardtop and convertible form. In 1959, a four-door sedan and four-door hardtop were added and the Impala took over as a flagship series in its own right, and the rest, as they say, is history. Ken is very fortunate to not only have one of Chevy's greatest milestone cars, but one with everything you could order on it, and in Rio Red to boot! He sure knows how to pick 'em!
Thanks, Lou, for presenting yet another amazing Ken Nagel car and letting us experience excitement on wheels!

Nice car. My first car was a 58 Chevy Del Rey with a 6 and three on the tree. I payed $35 for it when I was 15 in 1970. It even ran great and looked good. Then sold it to my uncle and he painted it blue with a white roof, my father said it looked like a Mexican taxi cab. Sold it to my uncle for $65. Some might remember, in the early '70s you could buy these cars from the '50s for around $150. Had 57 Ranchero I got for $150. Got a 50 GMC pickup for $185, he wanted $200 and it ran.

Totally a "Ken car"! LOL An amazing example. It should be mentioned though that, believe it or not, there's one ultra-rare option missing - factory fuel injection. The mechanical system was available from 1957 through 1959 on any model.

@@danielulz1640 Good point. I did see a '58 Impala with both, but the AC was added on. A FI buyer in '58 would not have wanted the AC to steal HP (most would not have not considered either at that time) but I'm curious if it was available.

    • @danielulz1640
      @danielulz1640 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@danielulz1640 No, the system does fit with the FI. Search YT for a vid of a guy with a loaded example with both. I honestly believe you could've ordered it from the factory, but AC was rare enough back then. Ordering both would've been an exceedingly unusual choice. Obviously an FI buyer, and there weren't many, was after higher HP, which the comp. would've stole.

As perfect as they come to the point it’s too nice to drive in a city. As well optioned as I have been seen. If it still had the Turbo glide it would be one of the few not converted to Powerglide. Some ultra rare options. Even the Continental Kit doesn’t look out of place on this car. In one frame the AC belt is about to be thrown off and in the next frame, it’s been removed. What a car! Unbelievable in all respects. Mr Nagle only had the very best.

@@Barry_Davis The Turboglide transmissions were an option from 1957-1961 and they were one of the very worst automatic transmission ever produced. They were very complex. The quintessential show car! GM's styling had an edge over Ford and Chrysler during that time. Well thought-out and proportioned, not as radical as Chrysler's new profiles, sleeker than Ford, they stood proudly in their own skin. One thing I didn't like about the '58 Chev was that the wagons only allowed for one back light, presumably for maximum door width. I always felt cheated when I looked at them!

Very nicely done car. They did not come out of the factory with that long chrome/stainless bullet streak down the length lining up at the door cuts as accurate as that. The dual fours would be a better set-up than the progressive linkaged triple two barrels as with only the center carb feeding the engine at less than highway speeds the furthest cylinders tended to run lean and hotter, frequently melting holes in the tops of those pistons. The other option not mentioned was the air ride with a knob over there on the right end of the dash beside the speaker fader that adjusted the ride height. I noticed he removed the A/C drive belt for the road part of the vid.
