I read the book “Disaster in Dearborn” which was the story of the Edsel. According to the author the Edsel was actually not a failure in the marketplace, but the rug had been pulled out from under it by Robert MacNamara. At the initial press introduction he announced that the car was being discontinued. How could it possibly succeed when the company that produced it wouldn’t stand behind it.

He went on to advise President Kennedy, on military matters. If that had happened earlier, we would have gotten a 1961 and up Edsel

From what I recall..being born in 52'..the Edsel wasn't popular..that being said..now I can appreciate the beauty and styling of the car..what a gem this one is..I'd take it in a red hot minute! Thnx Lou!

They were a little bit ahead of their time on styling. In the 70's the three piece grill was used on many Ford and Mercury models. The push button transmission selector was never a popular item and putting it 8n the stear wheel hub just made it worse. To the best of my knowledge only Chrysler was persistent in pushing the buttons, but eventually they discontinued them too. Now the levers are getting replaced by a dial, but that is because of the computerization of automobiles an linkages are being replaced with digital electronics.

The Edsel wasn't a very popular car, and that's what makes these cars unique. The Pacer is the top trim package, and this car has a cool color scheme. It's engine sounds healthy, and it looks like it's in pristine condition. Love these cars from the past!

One of my oldest uncles had a 1958 Edsel. My cousins told me they were afraid to go on the highway with him because he usually drove over 100 mph! I asked him about the Edsel, and he said he did not care how it looked. It was a great car and very reliable. I remember that car because he brought it to our house for a wedding or something. Since I was born in 1957, that shows you that he probably did have that car for many years! Another thing I remember is that he had a lot of miles on all his cars because they lived in the Twin Cities area. Thanks for showing!

Beautiful Edsel! The one thing that I don't think was mentioned was that the Citation was actually the "top of line" 1958 Edsel, not the Pacer. Also, I respect collectors personal touches, after all it's their car, but this model would benefit so much more with wide whites and original hubcaps. You can easily get modern type tires with the original look for a better ride.

¡Excelente video, y saludos cordiales!

The owner is correct @8:24 the Pacer was the top trim level for the "smaller" Edsel's sharing its body shell with the Fairlane. The longer wheelbase Edsel like the TOTL 1958 Citation, shared it's body with the Montclair. Besides the strange name, and controversial styling, they competed with Mercury's pricing, thereby becoming redundant. For '59 all Edsel's shared Ford chassis

Those Continental spare options were great for transporting 2 more kids, when the vehicle itself was full.
Those Cragar wheels look great, on that car.
Fred should lubricate that door hinge, before it pre-maturely wears out. That squeaking is about as annoying as the proverbial scratching the chalkboard routine.
If I'm not mistaken, the shorter-wheelbased Edsels were mounted on Ford frames and the longer versions were mounted on Mercury ones. The ones mounted on Mercury frames could get ordered with the brand new M.E.L. bigger block 430. The one-year-only Marauder engine option had higher compression and Tri-Power, giving it 400 horsepower.
Fred's missing tooth betrays him as being one of those who has bought his first Edsel for the purpose of getting into fistfights, at traffic lights, with anyone making fun of his car

Edsel didn't sell well. Most people thought they were ugly. The Car was supposed to be a step up from the Mercury. I have actually only seen one in person in my life time. It was parked next to my dad's 1960 Falcon in the church parking lot one Sunday. I had never seen one and I asked my dad what it was. He told me it was an Edsel and a few minutes later he said, "That is one ugly car." After that I only have seen them in pictures or on TV. As rare as they are, now they must make good collector cars. To be honest about them they should be good cars mechanically they are basically Mercury's in body, and Ford's in chassis and power train.

These cars were gorgeous. So unique! The problem was the media. Hot Nod, Car Crap, Popular Hot Dog magazines, pretty much wrote off Ford. Even to this day. I walk into a grocery store, grab all the Shittylet magazines and put them in the ladies hygiene aisle. Thanks Lou for tracking these old Ford’s down. 😀👍

Edsel's were likely good cars but it doesn't take much to figure out why it was a sales failure. With Ford, Mercury and Lincoln, the Ford Motor Company had just too many models. I bet a loaded Edsel wasn't too much cheaper than an entry level Lincoln and with the Lincoln being nicer looking and vastly more prestigious the Edsel was doomed. It seems only GM could pull off so many models/brands......great video Lou, thanks.

Edsels are not the ugly cars they were made out to be. Yes, the horse collar grille is unusual looking, but such a design was very uncommon then. Several car models have a similar style grille these days.

The Edsel was overhyped and didn't live up to the hype not a bad quality car but a marketing mistake it's different for the time it's was to be the 4th offering from Ford almost like with GM with Olds and Buick but a great car to take to a show since not many are seen it's gets attention today think it's great to see in in that condition
