Can you confirm the reason why you should check your mirrors before slowing for a red light? What are you looking for? If there is something behind you that isnt going to allow you to stop what are you going to do? Not stop? Your travelling straight... i know everyone one is taught this. But unless a change of direction is about to take place whats the point? I understand with moving off as there could be things around you that you should wait for... but stopping, your stopping no matter what because you have too!
When you check your mirrors before slowing you are assessing the speed and distance of the vehicle following. If there is nobody behind, you can please yourself on how you brake. If however you are being followed by a HGV which is too close and is also downhill in the wet, if you need to slow you should try to as early and as smoothly as possible. This then lessens the risk of an abrupt stop and the HGV hitting you. This is also an important factor when approaching a green light that could change; If you have the same HGV following you may decide not to stop on amber and proceed through. I hope this make sense? Ashley Neal it does, thanks for a great answer, i cant say i always check my mirrors when slowing down, however when stopped in traffic on faster roads, i will check behind me alot to make sure there isnt anything approaching too quick to stop, always ready to move quickly to the left to avoid being squashed. Yeah, I've been a passenger in a car where the driver didn't check their mirrors when stopping. They had decided to drive through on amber then changed their mind and stopped suddenly. They didn't maintain spacial awareness by observing behind, and the driver behind who was tailgating rear-ended the vehicle we were in.
Angel Gutierrez i don't know anything about the UK rules to claim that they're overkill or anything of the sort, but the US tests are so easy it's no surprise there are so many terrible drivers on the road. being in Florida, i come across bad drivers even during five-minute trips.

Not really, it may mean to be ready to slow down with special caution of pedestrians before near approaching the orange as it may change to red at any given second. It also means, on orange then be prepared to go after the red but after the green to now orange then slow you speed right down especially if the lights been on green for sometime! It is not a competiton, it is all about driving with extreme precaution near a toucan or pelican lights crossing as you were taught while over time then you should be building road safety awareness or just end up continuing paying a higher expensive insurance premium if you ignore this no brainer basic common sense of driving under due care in safety guidlines/ rules.

What l was saying is that if you near the line, 10 metres and it turns orange then it shouldn't matter if you gone through it as it far safer than braking before another car ends up in back of you also it far safer at the ten metres through it rule because drivers ready to go on other side should wait till it from orange as when it orange it gives you just around enough time to cross and come out of their way but if l am more than ten metres from line then l must slow down if necessary and be ready to stop if before ten metre distance as lights on green may change at anytime either way, we are not breaking any highway code rule here as look at the maniacs that don't slow down and go straight through red lights deliberately knowing they had enough time to slow down and stop!!!!

Stopping at red lights appears to be optional in your area. As for taxi drivers, I wouldn't want to travel with any of them let alone have to pay the fare.

Every time I’m in Liverpool or surrounding areas I’m astounded at standard of delta taxi drivers they are meant to be professional drivers but they are atrocious as somebody pointed out to me they are probably pirating or dropping drugs off and don’t care they think they are above the law

Luckily my instructor was the opposite, he was super calm and always talked in a calm voice. Even in stressful situations he would talk calmly and explain what I should do. It definitely with getting me ready for the test.

Going from Woolton to Huyton, he was driving with no lights on a dark evening, and turned right by overtaking a car already waiting to do the right turn. Are they in a parallel universe or something ?
Same was when i was learner and was going for license test, alot of people cut me off one almost crashed into me, its awful being learner, now that i have went trough it i will always feel compasion for new comers and future petrolheads!

I indicate right and speed up to overtake, as he's in the left hand lane and I am going to turn right. He swerves out in front of me, sees me late, as I'm braking to avoid him, and swerves back in again, then, as I overtake, I look in the mirror and see that he's giving me the finger! He's just done three things wrong in the space of 110 metres, and he's angry with _me!_
I'm from Wiltshire but I've come up to near Liverpool for University, and I have to say I'm severely disappointed with the lane marking here. That roundabout at 3:00 had no lane marking at all. Common sense based on the duel carriageway exit would suggest the left lane is left turn only and the right lane is for the outer lane and other routes. So by common sense standards that Ford did what you'd expect. Also logically at that sort of junction if you weren't coming off at that first exit you'd indicate right to show you weren't coming off at the exit directly ahead,just to remove any confusion. It's just poor marking all the time. There are a lot multi lane carriageways on the outskirts too that require specific lane selection and absolutely no signs telling you where to go at all. That or they imply one thing for a junction then completely change 30 seconds later. It's insanity.

I think in the case of the lorry, although it did have a fair amount of time to stop, when fully loaded it takes multiple more metres to come to a full stop and is dangerous in some cases.

It's not just kids watching out for cars at crossing/traffic lights....it's drivers having to watch out for kids not looking at the crossing lights and just walking out due to others ending their crossing. Had one yesterday he stepped out when the road light changed to green never looked at the lights or me, just stepped out....lad never looked and when i mentioned it I got told to shut up. go figure.
I took to driving very fast and used to drive even before I turned old enough to get on the road so I was used to cars before lessons but after watching these videos and hearing instructors conversations I think my poor instructor must of been pleased to get rid of me. He very rarely said anything about my driving we would just have general chit chat other than him saying turn left or right and half the time I’d argue his way of teaching was not how I would drive if he did tell me to do something. I made him burst out laughing once when we got stuck behind a learner and I proceeded to say bloody learners you always get stuck behind them whilst sat in a learner car myself haha I think he was relaxed though as I was pretty competent and the only reasons I carried on having lessons was because I couldn’t be bothered to get the theory out the way and done with. I must add though I passed my test 2 months after turning 17 with just 1 minor mark (I crossed my hands when turning. Something that apparently wouldn’t even be marked in this day and age?) I seem to be like you and come across terrible drivers on a daily basis and don’t get me started on the amount of people that still use their phones grrrr That Lamborghini sounded heavenly though! When a magistrate hands those Taxi drivers 6 points instead of 3 for jumping the traffic lights, maybe then they will remember they are classed as professional drivers and act accordingly! Truck drivers, Bus drivers, taxi drivers, if you earn your living driving you are considered a professional driver!
In general, the standards of driving in Liverpool are some of the worst I've seen. Every time I drive there I guarantee I'll come across the aggressive and careless stereotypes in droves. Perhaps it's just the only time I experience such traffic density in an urban environment, perhaps it is a Scouse thing, either way it's a crazy city to drive in.

I really think they should bring in that when you update your licence photo, you could have to do a refresher test, if you cannot make the grade then you can't update your licence. The complacency of these drivers shows they are too comfortable in a killing Machine
Not a fan of how your streets and traffic signals are layed out over there. Things are way too complex, inefficient and really unsafe just by the layout... and why is there a countdown light for Go? Is it a drag race? It's everyday life to you, but to me it looks like an accident in the making with the round abouts and the multi merge lanes upon merge lanes of snakes and confusion.
Because you don't just press the gas and go. You have a stick shift, which has to be prepared properly, and you have mirror checks because motorbikes and cyclists will have filtered up. It's also eco-friendly so that people aren't sitting there revving their engines waiting for green - they only need to prepare their car at amber.
lets be honest there are a few people who just should not be allowed near a road. bike. motercycle. car. van or. lorry. as they are just a danger to everyone around them as they are stupidly arrogont and ego driven
rather have this and come out of the lessons knowing for sure what to do and what not to do than have a soft instructor fill me with false confidence just enough to get through the test and then become part of the "new drivers cause xx% of accidents!" statistic a few months down the line...

Yh i had the same problem with my first instructor. Couldn't learn anything. Found a new one who is a lot calmer and it helped me to learn quicker

I took to driving very fast and used to drive even before I turned old enough to get on the road so I was used to cars before lessons but after watching these videos and hearing instructors conversations I think my poor instructor must of been pleased to get rid of me. He very rarely said anything about my driving we would just have general chit chat other than him saying turn left or right and half the time I’d argue his way of teaching was not how I would drive if he did tell me to do something. I made him burst out laughing once when we got stuck behind a learner and I proceeded to say bloody learners you always get stuck behind them whilst sat in a learner car myself haha I think he was relaxed though as I was pretty competent and the only reasons I carried on having lessons was because I couldn’t be bothered to get the theory out the way and done with. I must add though I passed my test 2 months after turning 17 with just 1 minor mark (I crossed my hands when turning. Something that apparently wouldn’t even be marked in this day and age?) I seem to be like you and come across terrible drivers on a daily basis and don’t get me started on the amount of people that still use their phones grrrr That Lamborghini sounded heavenly though! Completely pointless comment but hearing your conversations made me think back to my learner days!

I’m the same here. I’m 14 and I’ve been playing simulators since 9 and have driven in the real world. I can imagine the same thing happening lol.
When a magistrate hands those Taxi drivers 6 points instead of 3 for jumping the traffic lights, maybe then they will remember they are classed as professional drivers and act accordingly! Truck drivers, Bus drivers, taxi drivers, if you earn your living driving you are considered a professional driver!
In general, the standards of driving in Liverpool are some of the worst I've seen. Every time I drive there I guarantee I'll come across the aggressive and careless stereotypes in droves. Perhaps it's just the only time I experience such traffic density in an urban environment, perhaps it is a Scouse thing, either way it's a crazy city to drive in.

I really think they should bring in that when you update your licence photo, you could have to do a refresher test, if you cannot make the grade then you can't update your licence. The complacency of these drivers shows they are too comfortable in a killing Machine

Not a fan of how your streets and traffic signals are layed out over there. Things are way too complex, inefficient and really unsafe just by the layout... and why is there a countdown light for Go? Is it a drag race? It's everyday life to you, but to me it looks like an accident in the making with the round abouts and the multi merge lanes upon merge lanes of snakes and confusion.

I have no problem along with most drivers. Most of the time there are clear markings but if you know the rules you shouldn't need them anyway.
Because you don't just press the gas and go. You have a stick shift, which has to be prepared properly, and you have mirror checks because motorbikes and cyclists will have filtered up. It's also eco-friendly so that people aren't sitting there revving their engines waiting for green - they only need to prepare their car at amber.

rather have this and come out of the lessons knowing for sure what to do and what not to do than have a soft instructor fill me with false confidence just enough to get through the test and then become part of the "new drivers cause xx% of accidents!" statistic a few months down the line...
