The Elkhorn Crest Trail is awesome! It's also really dangerous and definitely has earned its expert rating. It's located outside of Baker City or LaGrande, take your pick. It isn't close to any major metropolitan area or even an airport. This is a remote adventure that's worth your while if you've got the resources to execute it.

That rock looks very volcanic on the south and then granitic. That looks like an amazing trail. It's too bad that I have an extreme fear of heights.

Great video. I rode almost everything with 2 batteries and barely made it back(easy to underestimate things up there. eMTB with flat pedals seat down 99% ridable. Few things to add, DO NOT ride lost Lake trail it says green, but you need to push your your bike even if it has a motor, also a terrible trail in general. DO NOT ride past the lake on Summit Lake trail, its a great trail to the lake past, the lake is not a trail just a path of water. following your walk down is North Powder River trail at the end of Summit lake is heinous rocky road that is not even climbable on a ebike.

Good info! It's funny how my extra battery comment was just an estimate, but you just added data to my speculation!

That is total of 1400 wh of batteries. Riding at 8,000 feet is like like riding double at sea level. Plus the exposure add a few miles. Your ride is like 50 miles of riding at sea level. Did you ride Dutch flats? Epic decent. Ironically the bike park trail was the lamest decent

That looks like a good candidate trail to bike pack. Camp out before the big decent to hit it fresh in the morning. Adding it to the list!

The only consideration is water access, but otherwise, yeah!

Enjoyed watching this. Rode this last year with a friend. No shuttle, so we drove up to the south end and headed north. I was hoping to get out to the wilderness area and come back, but my friend turned back about the 5:45 spot in your video. I continued on and turned back at the Pole Creek Ridge #1624 trail. In the end, only ended up doing a bit over 14 miles, but as you say, it is a trail that you have to be on point the whole way. It was nice to see what I missed, and the descent looks like a really fun time.
@HonestyVillainy, to answer your question about Moto. It is open. As I was riding back to the car, I passed a guy on a motorcycle. I've never ridden motorcycles much in my life, but I can't imagine riding something that heavy on a trail like this, alone, and making one mistake. Long way down and hard to stop something that big. I was impressed.
Maybe get back one day and try again. Beautiful area. How long did it take you to push through the wilderness area?
    Thanks!

Only took a couple hours to push through the wilderness. It's about 5 miles. A lot of it is pretty rough trail anyway.

    Welcome back.
    Interesting looking area.
Is this stuff open to moto use? (Not a moto user, just wondering). Alot of rough trail.
Looks like an ideal place for a high-powered and long travel ebike. Even with a shuttle.

I’m not sure about moto. It would require a very talented rider to not die, though.

I've been gathering info on this one, its only a couple hours away. How accessible are the roads to the trailheads at either end? Could you get to them in a 2wd Sprinter van? Looks like the southern trailhead is easier to get to?
I'm thinking of riding it over a couple days, in-out from each end to the middle-ish or further.

Do not attempt the Southern trail head in a 2wd Sprinter van, or any tall/long vehicle for that matter. You’ll be very sad. It’s a super rough road. The Northern terminus is the campground and that’s accessible by passenger vehicle.

So, all that section of the Elkhorn Crest Trail on the west side of the crest from just north of Columbia Hill north to the saddle above Anthony Lakes is technically in the North Fork John Day Wilderness, eh? Geeze. You're not even supposed to have a rolling bike in there. You have to carry it but not as a bike you can just put down and ride, i.e. wheels off and strapped to your back. Even having it on your back but rollable is an offense that can be cited. I still think it is a dumb interpretation of the Wilderness Act but that's a whole 'nother story. I'm guessing that they don't really care?

The locals definitely don’t care and told us to just ride it. I still fail to see how a horse is “primitive transportation” and thus allowed in the first place. Hell, there’s nothing “primitive” about hiking boots, nylon packs, etc… The bike ban is arbitrary and based on prejudice.
