Coldwater peak is a challenge to summit on a bicycle, but the views are arguably almost worth it. Almost. It's near Portland and not too far from Seattle. It affords a great view of St. Helens Lake as well as Spirit Lake and the summit of Mount Saint Helens and the entire blast zone.

Per a Nat Geo map, biking is allowed on that section of the boundary trail and to the east, past the intersection with forest service road 26. Bikes are not allowed on the Coldwater Peak trail or any other offshoots from the boundary trail.

Seems reasonable. There’s no reason to ride up the Coldwater Peak trail anyway. It’s easier to just hike it.

What's your source about Coldwater Lake being man-made? I've been told by sources like the Forest Service and geologists that the landslide from the 1980 eruption blocked Coldwater creek, backing it up. Nearby Castle Lake does have a man-made outlet to regulate its outlet but still created by the eruption like Coldwater. Not sure if Coldwater Lake's outlet had some help. I need to ask the Rangers about that.

I think you're right that the landslide created it, but I thought I'd read somewhere that the lake wouldn't continue to exist without human intervention. It is definitely actively managed to keep it from overtopping the natural dam and draining catastrophically.

It would be much worse. It was difficult enough to get my 29lb carbon bike around those obstacles. I’d hate to have a 45 lb bike up there.
