'Why fit a Formula 1-inspired Judd V10 engine into a Toyota A90 Supra' is probably not a common question we are all struggling with regarding our own personal projects. Still, we love that people like Ryan Tuerck can answer it for us!
This 4L 730hp (630hp ATW), 11,000 rpm capable Judd V10 powered 'Formula Supra' was at World Time Attack, and if you didn't see the car, you certainly heard it on song from all corners during its exhibition laps with Ryan Tuerck at the wheel. But how did the build come about, and what makes it tick?
Before falling into Ryan's hands (while fistfuls of cash fell out of them in exchange), the Judd GV4 V10 itself was a spare for an old Benetton Formula 1 car (an everyday use case) and thanks to Ryan's solid relationship with Toyota, it found itself not at home in an A90 Toyota Supra chassis sporting a MoTeC electronics package and tuning from John Reed Racing including the venerable M150 ECU and PDM30 which help put the power to the ground through aa Hollinger RD6 sequential gearbox. Interestingly, a Ford Explorer 8.8 rear differential was chosen for its range of ratio options and lightweight compared to the usual Winter Quick Change rear end thanks to fabrication pro Dominic Biro.
A lightweight Tilton Engineering 4 plate carbon clutch helps combat a thrust bearing design that doesn't suit drifting (LMP1 endurance cars only use their clutch to get the vehicle moving), with other help from Judd coming in the form of detailed manuals that cover the life expectancy of every party on the engine down to the exhaust manifold for ultimate reliability in an engine that was ultimately built to be hammered on for 24hours straight.

This is without a doubt one of the best presented vehicles you will ever see (which made tripping over it more embarrassing but I don't think anyone noticed 😅) and has many interesting aspects to it from both Ryan and John in their respective Tuned In podcast episodes (019 and 104) - www.hpacademy.com/podcasts/
Ryan also discusses how he has been able to fund (with some of his own money in this case) builds like this via sponsorships and industry relationships which do no happen overnight and take constant work. All worth it I'd say! - Taz.

Wild, I wouldn't of thought so many people were introduced to JUDD from Hillclimb vids. Pretty sick, big ups to Bozzy92.
I love that you somehow immediately manage to make these interviews go a lot deeper than is typical, like I've seen a couple on Ryan's Supra that spend half the time on the styling and feel of the car, but not a word on like how he managed to acquire the engine. Still really bummed you guys have so little subscribers despite this quality in content.
Was definitely a wild build to follow on Ryan’s channel, as it came together.
I originally slated this car for using the Judd engine for drifting , saying it was not a suitable engine and probably drop a valve .
So so pleased they went to time attack .
I watched quite a lot of the documentaries of the build and was very impressed yet cringed when they first went out on a demo run thinking that engine ain’t going to last .
Ironically just as these guys it was Georg Plasa and his Judd e36 that has influenced and inspired my journey.
We’re half way through a super light e36 GTR with 750bhp 😵💫. Definitely not an easy task considering the only un touched un modified components from the original shell are the rear lights and steering rack 😂.
Great interview guys 👍🇬🇧
RIP Georg, one of the legends. 👍
It's a mystery to the fashion-following crowd why genuine enthusiasts don't care for EVs. This is the reason; the aesthetic of the piston engine.
Pretty sure you're just throwing around indignant incendiary statements to get people to suck your egocock.
For anyone who has matured beyond seeking validation via denigration.. Using exclusive language like "genuine enthusiasts" outed any validity to your perspective and really just made you sound like a preteen defending their treefort.
Cars are cars, racing is racing. Hell I'd be into nuclear fusion powered cars, if there were such a thing. There are plenty of "genuine enthusiasts" that are into EVs.
Alas your treefort is safe. No need to respond, take care.
Best car interviewer gets what we want to know & hear. Sounds epic.... 😎👊👍👌✌
For me, one of the greatest engines ever, what a sound! And an absolutely epic build!
I am so glad someone finally used a Judd engine in this car.
Though I am out of the racing game currently, we built a 10,000 rpm 2.0L Subaru engine and one Norstar engine.
High RPM engines is where my heart is at.
Really miss the Subaru engine it was a one of a kind build.z
Hope to see this Judd go for a long time yet.
Been following ryan since early 2000s he really is a great driver
Thats is a weapon what a build
Imagine being so lucky to find one for half the money & that too "new used"
Andre always asks the best technical questions!!
damn, this was one of my favorite builds series in YT, I miss getting the notifications about it and seeing Ryan goofing around Dom at the workshop 😂
nice to see car the car back on track! great interview!!
Better to have loved and lost though right haha Glad you enjoyed this interview too 😎 - Taz.
31 spline 8.8 does it again.
I love this car so much.
wow only just now getting recommended this channel, insta sub, good stuff lads
Welcome aboard!
I've pretty much been dreaming of a JUDD engine for a little over 10 years. And I realize how impractical they are, but one of my dream builds would be tossing one of these into an SLC kit car. Ultima would be cool too, but I like the body lines on the SLC more.
182 hp/L.... that's equivalent of a Honda K24 making 438 hp. That's seriously impressive.
Well done Ryan!
Sounds unbelievable! 🤩
Great interview with a cool guy!
Ryan has a cool video about him at Judd with his engine before it went in the car.
Great build, I'm lucky enough to have heard Georg Plasas e36 with the same engine in person. There's just something special about high revving na engines. Must be a riot to drive.
Georg Plasa was using the 3.4 V8 Judd in his Cars and not the V10, nevertheless it’s great to see that he had such a great influence worldwide with his builds. RIP Georg, you’re a legend.
Nice car, pure sound clip at the end is amazing. Sounds fantastic
Ryan is awesome! Love all of his builds
In nitro cars they have tungsten buttons in the flywheel that rub on the mid plate so the thrust bearing isn’t wrecked
Brilliant exposee ❤
16:41. Smoke in the cabin just like my race car :)
Also just like my street car 😓
@@Desert_Spec 😂😂😂
No fun until it gets thick enough to ignite.
At some point, I really want to make a crazy project. Not pure track crazy, but a super hot street build. I want an EG Civic coupe with a light turbo K24, maybe 300-ish horsepower. All the hot stuff. Ohlins coilovers. Brembo brakes. Quaife sequential. Rollcage. But done properly. Very clean, very street. Full interior. And a wacky bodykit, neon lights and a full Itasha anime waifu wrap. I want to build a sleeper which is a sleeper by being as un-sleeper as possible.
Like n°1000
V10 for life❤
What an interesting engine. 👏. But I still reckon the new Supra is not a real good looking car ! Mk 4 is still the 1 Cheers from New Zealand 🇳🇿
have Misha drive the supra around the nurburgring
He says the engine needs to be rebuild every 3000 km. In a racing scenario where the engine is being stressed for many laps and seasons I can fully understand this.
But let's say if this Supra was used as a regular road car, would the rebuild intervals need to be the same? How durable are these engines in a daily driven scenario as a street car.
You won't find any documentation or data to make your own, but for some aspects it would absolutely be different for road vs race - Taz.
Would be a great car to campaign on the European Hillclimb circuit.
👏👏👏👏it was only a matter of time
a Judd V10 in the back of an Ultima RS/GTR would be awesome
widow maker ( I was in a 700hp ultima, already a widow maker)
I wonder if that Judd v10 would fit in a Cayman and work with the pdk?
The guy setting up that diff looks pretty handsome 😅😂
He’s making all the difference ;)
I believe the term is 'dreamboat' 😂 - Taz.
Cool buid! What it a "VIE TIN" tho?
Wait what happened to the question and answer regarding costs during the first third of the interview
I wanna see this vs rob dahms 3/4 rotor in a time attack
Probably i didn´t heard it, but whats the weight of that thing ? Awesome to see that kind of enthusiasm, to build such a car, this kind of engine, wether if V8 or V10 is like a holy grail in motorsports, there is not many more to be and of course its a lot easier to put a big turbo on the machine and get power, more than you need.
I believe it was around 1100kg without driver for this event as published by WTAC (as in you didn't miss it, we didn't ask in the interview sorry!) 😎 - Taz.

Dammit,now i warnt a v10 in my e46 m3😍
If you need any peer pressure, I'm your guy 😎 - Taz

I’d love to see this thing evolve with full unlimited active aero and turbos to compete against something like the Porsche RP968. I know he asked Judd about the possibility of turbocharging it and they met him with the 😐 face. I think I remember the Kyle Engineering page mentioning collabing on an Indy V8 powered Honda S2000 as well. If that ever gets off the ground, we could see some psychotic head to head matchups.
FD drivers are fun, they went through an era where it was all about getting more horsepower and they settled at 3x the hp they used to compete with, on machines that they’re able to control with incredible precision. The latest season wasn’t very competitive but it showed the power that teams had over individuals for the first time. Smart minds with loose regulations will always be able to go beyond what we think is possible.
I remember the 3L 10cyl F1 engines, this is the baby compared to those old F1s
For sure! It's like a baby that can run a marathon by comparison though! - Taz
What inline 4 engine is in that Corolla ?
Toyota 2AR-FE
Spelling mistake in title (11,000 instead of 11,00)! Just FYI, no hating here.
Thanks mate! A 1,100 rpm Judd V10 would be interesting in its own way I guess, but its not the case here for sure haha
Have a good one! - Taz.
@hpa101 🤣 I love yalls channel the sense of humor is welcome.
Imagine the torque on that thing. Prolly would be a judd v10 diesel 20L or something 😂😂😂@@hpa101
@@datdudeinred You could probably pull a train with that
I guessed the rear differential, guess i proved the title wrong
You win the prize I guess then - Taz

too much car for a judd , they're made for 650kg - 900kg track cars , them supra's are +1500kg
Yes because this is definetly a stock Supra with metal panels and a full interior and all features...
@@ihavewaited90daystochangem51
Still gonna be +1300kg . just means shorter lifespan
@@TheCraigy83 man you really have no idea what you're talking about. This thing weighs under 1300kg and Carbon surrounded by a multi point cage is safer and longer lasting than anything made of metal.
@@TheCraigy83 also an engine is made for exactly what you put it in when you build everything around it, The ignorance of some random guy with zero credibility and experience acting like they know better than career professionals is hilarious.

You sound American.
i make single seaters .
Judd themselves will tell you the increased load from extra mass will reduce the lifespan.

Yes, it's a V10 just like the engine in the LFA but that's where the similarities end.

I like LFA, I like Judd. I like v10.
I'm glad Ryan is happy.
