Sergei Markov is a liar - I lived in Odessa for 7 years until the war. Everyone spoke Russian. No one I met in Odesa spoke Ukrainian. The only place I heard them speaking Ukrainian was in Lyviv and the Carpathian mountains

Farage’s view on Ukraine is wrong on so many levels.
I think his initial comment was taken out of context. He is entirely right in saying in Putin's mind the West caused this war. I'm not saying it is factually correct because we know better but Putin being an extreme narcissist will blame literally anything for his actions as long as he doesn't have to accept any responsibility himself. If Putin thought a battalion of rainbow coloured unicorns were put on the border of Ukraine and Russia by Iceland to attack Russia he would have used it as justification for the war. That said he is wrong to suggest Ukraine should negotiate for peace with Russia because Putin has already outlined what he considers would constitute a peace deal, ie (paraphrased) "give me everything I have illegally annexed and I will stop fighting you". Which of course is not in Ukraine's interests in the slightest and certainly would not be the end of it, merely a pause in Russian aggression.
@@cantiaci On point. We all know, the sentence "... and I will stop fighting you." is a pure lie. He wants at least Odesa to get access to Moldova and control over the Black Sea, so we'll be here again in a few years. For the next "give me everything I have illegally annexed and...".

@fairhall001 Besides, Russian is not prohibited there. I had a court case for a car accident and the judge spoke to me in Russian. Russian, no longer is cumpolsary in school, just like French and Spanish are in English schools.
If ukrainian language is just russian, as he claims, then everyone in Ukraine speaks russian, and what is he complaining about?
I'll just point out again that the lexical distance between the Ukrainian and Russian languages is 38, which is just slightly further apart than Dutch and English (37)

@medeology4660 Yes. But admitting to this also implies that Ukrainian is a subset of the Russian language. This is absolutely untrue. They are both slavic languages, just like Polich and Czech. If anything, the opposite is true, considering Kiev predates Moscow by at least 450 years. Also we know that Moscow was founded by the brother of Oleg the wise (Prince of Kiev)

Russia, established in the 15th century when Ivan III broke free from the khanate, is much younger than most European nations, Moscow is a little more than half the age of Kyiv.
I don't know if you can say either language is older, since they've evolved as different branches from the same stem, are still evolving, and I don't know when they "split". But it would seem reasonable if russian is the younger branch. I'll have to dive into some linguistic studies to figure that out.

There were at least 4 things the interviewer should have dug super deep into his answers to make him see he is wrong with his russian logic. Short time constraint interviews don't help with reporting and intact hurt amd get a lot of misinformation out, which needs to STOP.

Russian wasn't banned in Ukraine, the Education Reform Act passed in Ukraine in 2017 stipulated that 20% of the curriculum had to be taught in Ukranian in non-Ukranian language schools, there are 440, from the age of 10. The government was concerned about students entering university, where the language of instruction is Ukranian, without sufficient Ukranian language skills. It would help if the interviewer was prepared. They always spout the same nonsense. btw. Russian was the language of instruction in Ukraine from 1925 to 1991, although in the 1921 census, it was found that 91% of the people were first language Ukranian speakers. By 1991 it was 70%. It has since risen to 85% as people therexare now rejecting all things Russian.
Thanks for clarifying that. I know the general situation of the Russian language in Ukraine but not the details. It is extremely aggravating to listen to Putin supporters say that Russian speakers were persecuted and Russian is banned in Ukraine. It is Ukrainian that was suppressed for centuries under the Russians (but projection is Russia's main defence). The majority of the Ukrainian refugees in my city, as well as TH-camrs I follow, are Russian speakers - they all see themselves as Ukrainian and want nothing to do with Russia. As you mentioned, many of them are trying to only speak Ukrainian now (but for older people it is difficult).
