@@tedteddington6223 Clearly we're talking about dictating things at gunpoint, not about dictating things in general. Every country can try to dictate policies, that's not the problem here. For example, when Poland exited USSR, the west dictated a switch to open market, and Poland agreed. To this day we debate in Poland if the switch could be done better. But there wasn't a military threat from the West, we just wouldn't get some of the incentives. Nobody had a problem with this.
Also, maybe you are not aware of the local sentiment that is the basis of the comment. The sentiment is, Russia has been hurting eastern europe for decades. Almost every person in eastern europe has a family member in last 2 generations who died due to Russia. When someone here says "Russia has no right to dictate us anything", we mean it in this particular context.

@@janb3625 Fair point well put. On the other end of that though is the SS division made up of Ukrainians who killed Poles. There's much hurt on all sides and there is much nuance within any point. Squadron 303, best damn pilots the (1940) RAF had. Cheers.

May I respectfully point out to the ambassador, who is surely far more knowledgeable on this topic than I am, that NATO didn't strongarm any of the former Soviet Republics or Soviet satellites into joining. They asked to join for safety because of their experiences with the USSR. Also, Finland and Sweden would still be neutral and outside NATO if Putin hadn't invaded Ukraine.

In Putin’s eyes Western nations is a pretence of secret “global government” to lure the entire population of the Earth under their control. He simply doesn’t believe that citizens can possibly nationalise their governments.

I'm off topic slightly. Chamberlain did try to avoid war with the Czech agreement, it possibly slowed down Hitler's master plan and gave Britain time to improve their military preparedness. Chamberlain declared war in 1939 and he died in 1940,with hindsight I feel he acted responsibly for the British and the title of "appeaser" given to Chamberlain is not really justified as Britain was not ready for war in 1938.

Russia didn't invade Ukraine due to NATO. Putin, himself, denied that cause when it was raised in the Tucker Carlson interview. Subsequently, Putin cognitively wandered off into his mists-of-time imperialist jibberish.

I am encouraged that Sir Tony extended his hand to Sir Bill for further dialogue on this issue and others. It was telling how two great minds can take a nuanced view of the same subject. More support at this level for Sir Bill can only be excellent news in a wider context and concerning the furtherance of the Sergei Magnitsky Act campaign worldwide.

Also, anyone claiming that "NATO is a threat to Russia" has to explain why Russia withdrew its forces from Finnish border after Finland joined NATO.
NATO is a defensive threat to Russia, for sure. Not an offensive one. Very important difference.

As Jake Broe makes clear in his excellent updates on the war in Ukraine there are more reasons why Russian fears of Ukraine joining NATO is claptrap.
    1. Whereas there had been no talk of this prior to the invasion, Russia has been doing military exercises along the Ukrainian border ever since 2016,
    2. If the Russians fear "NATO agression," why are they actually WITHDRAWING troops and military installantions from the Russo-Finnish border?
    3. And why, if they fear "NATO agression," do they waste so many precious missiles (of US $ 500,000 or so a piece) on Ukrainian hospitals, schools, churches, market places, theatres and appartment blocs?
In all their actions the Russians make it clear that they have not the slightest fear of any NATO attack on their country.

Bill Browder is one of the few that seems to really understand Putin. I have been following Russian geopolitics for 20 years. This ambassador really seems not to understand the psychology of the main actors of this conflict, I am not impressed. Russians are scared of NATO because their dictator has been telling them to do so for the last 15 years. He removed armed forces from Finland border, he knows perfectly that NATO is a defence organization, and he is playing with that against the West. Bill Browder is a very knowledgeable character in this conflict, thanks for his effort.

The Russian apologist fails to recognize several key points, including 1) if Russia is so worried about NATO, then why have they emptied their military bases along the NATO border? They've moved all their kit to Ukraine . They clearly know that NATO will never invade Russia unless Russia attacks them first.
    2) Surrendering to Putler will NOT result in peace, but instead will allow Putler to recover and then continue the war on some lame pretext like he did in February 2022.

I think it’s a little more nuanced, the Russians appear to fear Ukraine joining NATO but not say Finland. So there is another conversation going on inside Moscow other than the direct threat of NATO. So NATO didn’t provoke this, this is purely a Russian projection. They fear a democratic Ukraine doing well inside the western “umbrella”.

"assurances" is not "guarantees", that agreement was crafted to get the nuke out of Ukraine, memorandum you all talking about was crafted to lure Ukraine thinking they are guaranteed safety. There is extensive paper on "weekiliks" about the memorandum and how your signature country's manipulated decisions of Ukranians to sign the deal with no guarantees.
