How modern weapons halted Putin's 20th century tactics | Superpowers

  • The Ukraine war presents an intriguing blend of age-old warfare tactics and cutting-edge technology, reflecting both the past and future of global conflicts. The war has rekindled traditional industrial-age warfare in Europe, whilst introducing the use of advanced technology like SpaceX satellites.
From the foot soldier's eternal struggle with trench foot to the deployment of SpaceX satellites, the war in Ukraine is a paradoxical mix of past and future. On the ground, Ukrainian soldiers are learning lessons from a bygone era, a stark contrast to the high-tech warfare unfolding in the skies above.
The war represents the return of industrial age warfare to Europe, a concept many thought extinct. This style of warfare requires nations to harness their economic power to fuel the front line.
However, the crux of this conflict isn't just about technology, but the resurgence of mass warfare. Western nations, seduced by advances in technology, have overlooked the importance of mass - mass manpower, mass tanks, and mass drones. The war in Ukraine is a stark reminder of this balance.

The Russians never learnt how to fight other than by doing what they did in WWII with Meat Assaults. They forgot that 150,000 Allied airmen gave their lives to destroy Germany's armament production ability, and so instead of facing 5,000 Tiger tanks they only saw 300.

Ironic that during any military training, any old account (Cannae- tactical movement, Agincourt- terrain and deployment, Kasserine-training and experience, etc.) is useful. Combat with 21st century technology, but taking into account all past histories of all countries. It would appear that tank tactics require review as drone technology as added a new angle during the Ukraine conflict.

@@dennisbalgobin461 As defenders, and by not using cannon fodder tactics, the Ukrainians are said to have lost about a third of the Russian figure. The 500k number was, I thought, the total casualties. However a Russian Orthodox Bishop stated that the half a million was just the dead. Most analysts put the numbers at around 75k Ukraine and 240k Russian dead and the usual extrapolation for the wounded is 3 wounded for every fatality.
Truth is, no one will know much until after the war, and, given the nature of Russian 'Truth' we will probably never have a real number.

The tank is less the issue than its application. If your crews and commanders are penny/ha'penny (showing my age) conscripts they are literally going to get creamed by anything like a decently trained and equipped army. In the past the Russians have traded land for time but in this war they've been trading lives with very little time.

2:32 really, have we? We have seen a technological change like in WW1. Tanks NEW, AIRPLANES NEW.
In a time not so far away drones and swarms will saturate "modern" capabilities. I mean small drones in large swarms.
The military industrial complex needs like 10-20 years for innovation and implementation. Also ordering military technologies need to be faster and more flexible.
We need to use the capabilities we are leading in and combine something like silicone valley and the complex to iterate, test and repeat like crazy. In the beginning of the Iraq war refueling was calculated manually. When was the f 35 designed and what are the electronics? My pc is maybe mor powerful. We need iteration circles like in WW 2 but translated to semiconductor speed.
For example, Leopards 2 are hand crafted and use electronics hardware and software on the hardware required that is quasi ancient.
Iterations, testing and iterating. Upgradability, modularebility.
Here for example we could really learn a lot from Ukranians. Necessity makes inventions more fast!
Huthis use cheape iranian drons and missiles and threaten global commerce! A small backwater group.
Hamas surprised Israels Military and secret services and overwhelmed the border guard. This can happen to us too. We need to adapt fast.
With every tanks we need anti air capabilities. Aircraft carriers are obsolete, to expensive for one rocket. Cheaper anti air than rockets but there will be a lot of targets.

HEADLINE: Putin calls for resuming production of intermediate missiles after scrapping of treaty with US
QUOTE: MOSCOW (AP) - Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday called for resuming production of intermediate-range missiles that were banned under a now-scrapped treaty with the United States.
The Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces treaty, which banned ground-based nuclear and conventional missiles with a range of 500-5,500 kilometers (310-3,410 miles), was regarded as an arms control landmark when Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev and U.S. President Ronald Reagan signed it in 1988.
The United States withdrew from the treaty in 2019, citing Russian violations.
“We need to start production of these strike systems and then, based on the actual situation, make decisions about where - if necessary to ensure our safety - to place them,” Putin said at a meeting of Russia’s national security council.
Putin said Russia had not produced such missiles since the 2019 treaty scrapping, but that “today it is known that the United States not only produces these missile systems, but has already brought them to Europe for exercises, to Denmark. Quite recently it was announced that they are in the Philippines.”
The end of the INF was a milestone in the deterioration of relations between the U.S. and Russia.
The last remaining arms-control pact between Washington and Moscow is the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty, which limits each country to no more than 1,550 deployed nuclear warheads and 700 deployed missiles and bombers. It’s set to expire in 2026, and the lack of dialogue on anchoring a successor deal has worried arms control advocates.
    ------------
And if anyone actually BELIEVES that Russia is adhering to ANY international arms treaties, I have a pink palace in Florida to sell them. No bunker attached, but it does have a few rooms used for storage that might need to be fumigated for roaches (6legged and 2legs).
