Benaud is one of the most unbiased and knowledgeable cricket analysts. He is a neutral Aussie too. Benaud has also said 92 Sydney hundred by Tendulkar as the best Test innngs he has seen played in Aussie soil. He picked that over Tendulkar's more famous perth hundred.

Anyone who plays for a really long time and is amenable to adjusting and playing differently given the team make-up will do well by following Tendulkar's example. He played with free flow when he had almost no support for more than a decade. Then, he played within himself because he needed to play maturely, for others (like Sehwag) could play riskier innings. In this second phase, he played with full flow if he felt it was absolutely needed, for he was a team-man. Those who regret having not seen him in full flow should know that there are plenty of clips available.
For those who cannot differentiate Tendulkar from Lara, here is what I propose: one of the key differences between the two was that Tendulkar was more capable against highest-quality fast bowling. Lara was murderous against medium pace, and he was among the best against high-quality fast bowling, but the highest quality fast bowling found him deficient. You can see how awkward Lara was against Alan Donald for example, and that is just one example of many.
I have seen batsman from Viv Richards onwards. Viv was the most destructive batsman without question. Gavaskar was the best defensive batsman, Gower was the most stylish, Hayden was the most brusque batsman, Gilchrist introduced the game-changing destructive keeper-batsman, Lara had the most beautiful arcs of bat swing, Ponting had the best leg-side play against fast bowlers, Inzamam had the most control against fast bowling, Laxman had the most grace, Border had the most grit (more than Steve Waugh), but Tendulkar had everything! For each of the above aspects that I mentioned, Tendulkar would be either as good, or a very close second to the best. That is why he is the best that I have seen in 35 years of watching cricket.

almost all the greats including bradman, viv richards, brian lara, alan donald, wasim akram, shane warne and most commentators agree that Tendulkar is the best since Bradman. sachin at his peak had no support from his bowlers or fellow batsman. in a team game that makes a whole lot difference. sachin can be as destructive as lara or viv richards (aus vs world11 anyone?). and his longevity has no parallel in any sport!

    • @shabsify1

As usual your premise is based on if's and but's and who would know whether it would have transpired that way or not...referring to the pre murali peak(i don't know whether there really was one) lara wouldn't have scored that many coz they were as you would say his horny sex years and he wasn't as focussed on his batting...he did score one of his least famous hundreds 115 vs SL in 1997(supposedly the pre murali peak) his only noteworthy score in the 2 tests played in that series...that should pretty much answer your question not to forget Lara scored his first test hundred in 1993 and was more of a prodigy till then..Tendulkar already had become a force in test cricket by then and a rock in the indian batting order when he first came up against murali in 1994

No support from Rahul Dravid, Suarav Ganguly, VVS Laxman, Virendar Sehwag? Apart maybe, from his first couple of years, he played in the world's best batting line-up and also had the likes of Kapil Dev, Ravi Shastri and Mohammed Azahruddin to mentor him. I would go along with Benauds assessment of Tendulkar but you'll note that he made no such claims regarding the other Indian batsmen. India were weaker in bowling and fielding but their batting was never a problem.
Keep an eye on Kohli though. He may not be technically as good but mentally I think he is stronger and is also, I think, determined to keep improving. He top scored in the recent series in England against a very strong England attack where he faced bowling which was world class in all departments and was very sharp in the field. He looks like the only current batsmen who could possibly surpass Tendulkar, and I think he really wants too.

I agree with Benaud - Tendulkar is the greatest batsman since Bradman but Bradman is still miles ahead. And the reason - again as Benaud points out - is that unlike Bradman, Tendulkar has not been incomparable in his own time. He has certainly been the best, but there have been a handful of other batsmen that are clearly in his league, even if they may not be precisely as good. The likes of Lara, Ponting and Kallis would top that list. So to argue that Tendulkar is comparable to Bradman would be automatically to say that Lara, Pointing and Kallis are comparable to Bradman - which is just not the case.
As far as the most valuable player (not just batsman) is concerned, since 1980 at least its not even close - two all rounders tower over the others. Imran Khan - who was as good a bowler as any in history with considerable batting prowess. And Jacques Kallis - who was as good a batsman as any in history (save for Bradman) with considerable bowling and fielding contributions. I would personally take these two in a minute over any of the other specialist batsmen or bowlers and that includes the likes of Lara, Tendulkar, Marshall, Richards, Wasim etc.

    • @Bernie8330
      @Bernie8330 9 ปีที่แล้ว +10

Allen Lobo I agree with most of your premises, just not that Kallis was in the same league as a batsman as Lara, Tendulkar and Ponting (from same era]. I regard Kallis as a 'very good' batsman, rather than a truly great one, but given he was the easily the best '5th' bowler by a good yard in both forms of the game during his era, he has a claim on being in the top three all-rounders ever, with only Sobers, and Gilchrist (both superior batsman to Kallis] ahead of him.
Stats are useful, but in no way absolute, but they are always interesting. Tendulkar scored 1OO international centuries (across both forms of the game], Ponting 71, Lara 53, and the Waugh twins 73 between them. Kallis scored 62, and his average is comparable with any of these players. However, his strike rate in both forms of the game is considerably less than these other players mentioned, namely Lara, Tendulkar and Ponting.
To be a truly great batsman, in my mind, you either have to succeed really well consistently against the best attack of your era (which Tendulkar and Lara did, i.e. against the Australian attacks led by McGrath and Warne], or be consistently the best batsmen in the dominant team of your era, which Ponting, Gilchrist, the Waugh twins and for that matter Matthew Hayden were, although admittedly Hayden would perhaps be better consigned to discussions on the best openers.
Kevin Pietersen, Inzamam-ul-Haq, Aravinda de Silva, Kumar Sanggakara and Mahela Jayawardene are also batsmen I would un-hesitantly rate higher than Kallis (as a batsman that gives opposition bowlers and captains sleepless nights before a game or series I Mean].
This is no disrespect to Kallis, as anyone, whether the doyen of commentators or an unknown armchair fan rating him one of the three greatest allrounders is revered praise indeed.

    • @waynevoss4194
      @waynevoss4194 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Lets talk stats quickly here. you will see that Kallis in his first 6 years of his career ( from 1998 to 2004) was rather slow. compared to his last 9 years. The reason for being slow and looking like a batting robot. batting way to slow and making the game boring is because he had no one to bat with. only when the likes of amla and de villiers came to the game did he score at a prolific rate, hence the 45 test centuries. now the question is why is kallis 3rd on the list of the most runs but he is second on the all time list for the most centuries in test cricket. the simple answer is he didnt have the same amount of matches as ricky ponting and suchin tendulkar. yet he score a 100 every 3 matches which is considrebly alot better than tendulker and ponting. in the end kallis has a better avarage than both batsmen and a better conversion rate of these 2 other legend. kallis was never a entertainer. he was a team man who put his team before his own ambitions. quite frankly i would rate him better than tendulkar or ponting.

BTW, Sachin and Lara both played in weak teams throughout the 90's, yet they were complete destroyers of bowling attacks. Unlike Jacques 'Snail' Kallis.

Its absolutely true that they did destroy bowling attacks. theres no doubt that they are talented, but you also have to look at the win loss ratio of both players. as attacking as both both players where they threw their wickets away and cost both WI and India certian victory or a possible draw. loom mate i am not a big fan of Kallis here. more the AB and Faf fan but i am stating the obvious here. Tell me also one more thing. how come does Kallis have more man of the matches and man of the series than Tendulkar and Lara?

Another factor to his game within (Gary Sobers) batting was that he refused to wear "protection" that we see today. He claimed that this "restricted" his view and his reflexes when it came to batting. Gary Sobers had this gift where he could see the "ball" as a "Soccer ball" where as many could only see it as a "cricket ball".

This might have been 10 years before Tendulkar's retirement. Post this statement, Sachin reinvented himself after tennis elbow, scored the first double century in ODIs, 673 runs in 2003 WC, won the 2011 WC scoring 496 runs behind Dilshan's 504, so many test centuries including the no cover drive innings, CB series exploits, Orange cap in IPL to name a few. That small gap has increased manifold. Easily the 🐐.

I agree that Sir. Don had the most batting average and undeniably the best batting stats. BUT 1. how many teams he played against? 2. How different were the conditions he played in comparison??. 3. How many bowlers he faced in his career including pace swing and spinners???. 4. How competetive were the bowlers he faced?
This is the reason why I put Sachin Tendulkar above him.
    1. He had a long career than Sir DON.
    2. He played against more than 10 teams.
    3. He played in every cricketing condition unlike Sir DON.
    4. He came in an era which was ruled by bowlers(most of them are legendary) from WI, PAK, OZ, ENG, SA.
    5. Most of all the pressure of him preforming by a billion people. I'm sure Sir DON had similar but he himself said he had no nerves playing the game.
    6. He still is on top of records and stats in many formats.

Also now lots of past players are putting Lara over Tendulkar. But if you dig a little. In 90's almost no one put Lara over Tendulkar. Due to World War 2, Bradman missed his prime years from age 30 to 38. From the time he came back after WW 2 and retired at the age of 40, he averaged 105.72 from 15 matches with 8 centuries.

Yes that because India had the greats like Rahul Dravid, Laxman, Sourav, Sehwag so it's obvious that distribution is less as after 2000 Everyone of these greats contributed but before 2000 sachin was alone & sometimes Azhar. So it's not sachin's fault it's more competitiveness in the team. It doesn't prove sachin is not the best batsman. It's about the tenure how long you have performed consistently against top class fast bowlers in the world. So if we consider then he is way better than his nearer competitor. Even greats of different era also told that he is the best. Your logic will not prove that he is not the best batsman in the world.

He faced modern great pairs like Anderson-Broad and Steyn-Morkel. He faced Warne and Murali, the two greatest spinners of all time. He faced guys like Malinga and Paul Adams who had probably two of the weirdest bowling actions in cricket history. He scored in India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, UAE, England, Ireland, Scotland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Caribbean, USA and everywhere in the World. Wherever he went he had to face legendary names who are considered all time greats. Everytime he went onto bat he had to take burden of hopes of 2 Billion people and he survived with his greatness intact for a quarter of a century inspite of multiple career threatening injuries. Same does not apply for Donald. @MultiSazam Viv played in an era when there were many genuine fast bowlers in the game. Rules were bowler-friendly and they could send down 6 bouncers an over. Plus, the pitches were more lively and the protective equipment was minimal.
Most batsmen would barely survive against such bowlers. That can be seen with the relatively inferior overall batting averages then. Viv could go out and dominate bowlers in such an era. He was a special batsman as Chappell, Gavaskar and Border were.

Having said that there are far more bowlers bowling around the 90 mark then there were in previous times even if a few guys like lillee, thompson, holding, etc are quicker then most current bowlers. In any event it has been shown over time that raw pace doesn't make the best bowlers. None of Mcgrath, Pollock, Ambose, Walsh, Marshall, or Akram were express quicks. They just bowled accurately and had some other weapon whether it was swing, bounce, etc.

@Biggus63 I agree with the Warne debate but you can't leave out Wasim because of his ability of reverse swing.
But then again Sobers can bowl is left arm spinners and Sachin can bowl his part time leg spin. It would have to be Murli I guess because it's a like for like replacement. If you to go with two spinners then Sachin has to lose out because the batting is powerful with or without him.
I agree with Imran ahead of Knott in the batting line up!
