I can promise you two things as an Indian 1) I absolutely believe that Bhajji said “Maa ki” and not “Monkey”. “Maa ki” is as common as saying “Mate” in Aussie. 2) Most people in India (incl. Bhajji) did not even know why it was wrong to call certain people “Monkey”. Any kid or person that misbehaves, we call that person “bandar” (I.e. monkey) - therefore, even if Bhajji said it, it was not racial slur.
Until this whole monkey gate, I actually never knew that the team that bullied all other teams, couldn’t handle just a drop of their own medicine. I learned that Aussie team isn’t so “tough” after all.

Australians are very culturally insensitive in what's acceptable and whats not. It's outrageous for Australians to unilaterally decide that racial abuse is the one where we will draw the line. Talking about wives and mothers was traditionally not tolerated in Indian culture. Symonds was the one who tried to go after Harbhajan because there was a long partnership. So boo hoo, dont go after sledging people and then go run to uncle referee when somebody hits your nerve. Plus, they lost the case. And if your morality is compromised by Indians threatening to leave, you didnt have any to begin with.

    • @Playtechy
      @Playtechy 8 ปีที่แล้ว +20

+Saint Val Talking about Culturally insensitive, do you think India aren't?
There are far more Indians living in Australia than Australians living in India, this is largely due to culture. India's intolerance for "lower class" citizens, treatment towards women and total and utter disregard for any culture or custom that isn't their own indicates a level of insecurity and a self-righteous beliefe that their culture is all that matters.
Culturally insensitive? If you ask me, we're too sensitive to cultures. We allow cultures to infuence our way or life here in Australia on a daily basis. Even cultures, such as India's, which is hundreds of years behind the rest of the world, has a place in Australia to a large degree - provided the laws are upheld (Sorry, no honor killing your wife for cheating, such is still used in lower-class areas of India). Australia allows cultures, even hurtful, destructive and idiotic cultures to have a say and have a place here - even Radical Islamists are almost a protected species due to our "Cultural Sensitivity".
An Indian has no place to talk about cultural sensitivity considering their country only allows one culture, which even out-rules laws, or laws are made to suit that culture. Areas of Hong-Kong are also very closed off to cultures, but they are at least respectful to other cultures.

Playtechy my statement was limited to this case, not a generalization of Australia. I should've chosen my words more carefully. I've never been to but I hold a high opinion of Australian society as a whole.
Yup we are intolerant. Want more proof? We only have around 1700 languages, 22 officially recognized, every major/minor religion in the world. Population of 1.2 billion. Never been the aggressor to any foreign state. So yeah, you're right, we must be intolerant.
And we are extremely intolerant of cricketers who think sledging is their birthright to initiate but also then define boundaries unilaterally. Classic example - the McGrath-Sarwan ugliness.

    • @stval
      @stval 8 ปีที่แล้ว +17

Playtechy why do you keep comparing India the country to Australia? As I said I was only talking about this incident. Which by the way after appeal in a court proved was not racial abuse. Evidence produced included stump Mic recordings. when has India filed a complaint against any verbals? Seems like you have opinions but nothing to back them up. The same thing happened with Sarwan and the common factor is Australian players not Indians.

I compare Australia and India due to the original comment being obviously about comparing Australia and India.
It wasn't using the "wrong words", the comment was in relation to "Australian's insensitivity to other cultures". It is only correct that all replies be of the same nature. You shouldn't now change the context of the original post.
"common factor is Australian players not Indians" The same could be said about Ball Tampering and Match Fixing. The common denominator appears to be Indians.
HOWEVER sledging is generally acceptable and done by ALL teams. Cheating, Match Fixing and Ball Tampering is never seen as acceptable and isn't done by all teams - India appear to feature much higher in these instances than most other nations.

Playtechy as noted above, I clarified and apologized for the ambiguity in my words in the original post. It was specific to this incident and other incidents similar to it. In 2008 Sydney Test, Ricky Pointing got Harbhajan(bhajji) ousted from remainder of series by getting him involved in tussle with Symonds. Symonds, being a soldier to his captain, did what he was asked to do. Yes, by falsely accusing Harbhajan of Racial abuse.. that was Monkey Gate. What Bhajji really said was "Teri maa ki .." (world famous Hindi Slur)
Real Reason - Harbhajan is the only bowler Pointing could not play confidently in his whole career and got him out most no. of times (you can check). He knew bhajji is hot headed and cannot speak English properly.
Everybody knows how Sydney Test played out.
->More than 13 wrong decisions were made by Umpires (on both sides, India got the heavy burn though) and next day newspapers headlines said the truth.
-> One time, Mark Benson was asking Pointing if Michael Clarke caught a catch and Pointing simply raised his fingers.
-> Symonds and Clarke refused to walk when they were clearly caught behind.
Aftermath - After this whole fiasco of Monkey Gate, racial tension caught wind in Australia and more than 50 Indians were killed in 2008 -09 to what Aussie media terms as "casual racism" during 2020 Sydney Test incident.
FYI - Bhajjji's nephew was one of the victim who was killed and thrown on railway track in Australia.
    Other incidents -
=>There is an old footage of Jusitn Langer intentionally passing behind a SriLankan Batman (happened during field setting after an over) during a test match and dropping bells from the stump which confused Umpires of how it fell. But the commentators got it.
=>Famous underarm incident brought shame to Australia.
=>Dennis Lille once used bat with Aluminium willow which changed shape of the ball. When umpires called him on this..he got angry.
=>In one match Dennis Lille kicked Javed Miadad while he was running.
=> Australian bowlers frequently crossing in the path of batsman while running is common to get them run out (Johnson once famously did this to Dhoni).
=>And the infamous sand paper gate and many more.
*Mindset of Australians is to win at all cost no matter what it may cost them. But the most disappointing outcome is that culprits from all above mentioned incidents are WORLD CLASS players with immense talent.
And they chose to do all this foolishness just to win a Cricket match.
There could be only 2 reasons to this -
Either, they were so confident that they thought it is right thing to do and would never get caught.
OR they don't believe in their own talent so wanted to ruin it for others.
And I don't know which is worse.
Australians have to seriously change their ways how they carry themselves as players inside the field.
But after 2021 Sydney Test incident, I will die before supporting any team with Australian players no matter whoever they are.

+Nikhil Vidhani lol I am an Indian and I will tell you that Harbhajan DID NOT say MAA KI. He SAID Monkey. The maa ki thing came later on to save his sorry ass. I remember right after the match I was surfing a site called as'Orkut' where many fellow Indian fans had joked with smileys ( It was actually a forward , you could make it out) about Harbhajan calling Symonds as 'Maa Ki' and not monkey- this was just 30 mins after the
game- get that right- 30 mins!!. And there was NO NEWS what so ever about Harbhajan Claiming to have said of 'Maaki' the only news coming out at that point of time was how Australia cheated and the umpires did a
shitty job and that Harbhajan Singh has been banned for some games for racial abuse. There is NO WAY ordinary fans sitting in their home and surfing orkut would know that Harbhajan singh said 'maaki'. I clearly
remember reading these Maaki jokes on orkut forums and a couple of SMS texts and the next thing we know is 'harbhajan said maaki and not monkey'- Obviously someone gave Indian management and defense lawyers
this idea and Mr harbhajan got away with murder ( yet again). Besides common sense, WHY the FUCK would an International player like harbhajan who had played about 10 years of International cricket at this point of
time and had spent a lot of time playing county cricket ABUSE a Australian in punjabi( maaki) when it is common knowledge that symonds does not know punjabi + harbhajan has always spoken with aussies in
english in past+ harbhajan had issues with aussies in previous series aswell and always spoke in english + Symonds started conversing in english with harbhajan during this fight and harbhajan responds with
'teri maaki'? That is BULLSHIT. And let us not forget the fact that Sir Sachin tendulkar initially said' i did not hear anything' and then says I heard him say 'maaki' suddenly after harbhajan singh came up with the 'Maaki' excuse. Indian players also tried to frame brad hogg for saying' Bastards' the moment the monkey charge came in. Too much fishy stuff, I am pretty sure harbhajan Singh got away with a very awful offense and he later went on to slap sreesanth a few months later and eventually did get banned ( Karma!!!). Add to the fact he never visited
Australia again( to play another series I mean). Look I am no fan of australia and Symonds had this coming to him owing to his pathetic behavior, but we cannot defend a goon like harbhajan , otherwise we
cannot claim the moral high ground.

Gilchrist called Sachin a Liar, Cheat and an unsporting person in his book. Ponting says India threatened to pull out that's why the verdict was given in their favor. The fact of the matter is it was tried in court and there wasn't any evidence that Harbajan said those things. In fact, Ricky Ponting, one series before in India playing ODIs said to the Indians "We will be waiting for you in Australia." That means all this was pre-planed, they wanted to frame some Indian players they did not like. Andrew Symonds sledged Harbajan when Bhajji went and patted Bret Lee's back for bowling a superb delivery to him. And the judge on this said - If you sledge opposition players when they walk up to the opposition player praising him, then only god can save this game.

The court proceedings were a farce.
If India lost the court case they were going to leave the series and refuse to pay Australian Media compensation. They used the money the ACB were going to lose as a tool to have them stuff up their court case.
Ie: During the court case, Tandulkar's testimony wasn't challenged. He said he didn't hear anything of what was said to the Match Referee due to crowd noise and being too far away. During the court case, he magically heard everything and backed Bahjji's "story". This should have been challenged at court - but wasn't. Tandulkar lied and got away with it.
Bahjji said to the match referee "But he started it" in answer to the charges and didn't deny saying it. However, at the court case, all of a sudden he didn't even say it - he said something in his native toung, which would make NO SENSE whatsoever to say to someone who doesn't speak that language. Bahjji changed his story - this wasn't challenged either at court.
The Australian players who state they heard it wasn't asked by the ACB to give evidence.
The ACB convieniently "Forgot" Bahjji's priors. If they had brought them in - Bahjji would have been banned and India would have gone home.
Suchin is a liar and a cheat.
Bahjji is a racist and a coward.
The BCCI are corrupt and petty.
The ACB are toothless, weak, pathetic and shameful.

In doing what they did (aggressively pursuing a severe sentence), they were absolutely, INDUBITABLY in the right, and anybody who says otherwise, either clearly lacks any real understanding of racial history/constructs and the potential impact of racism on a person's psyche, or is just...well, a complete bigot. What they DON'T know however (and those of us living in India do) is that there's actually no chance Harbhajan could have even CONTEMPLATED using the word in question, because there's just no way in hell that he'd have had any idea about it's racial connotation, and HEINOUS usage as a means of dehumanization. Here the Aussies didnt understand the language the Indians were speaking but thought harbhajan said monkey cause the word sounded like it and it was during a fight so the Aussies would assume that the Indians were saying bad stuff. this is exactly like when Sehwag hit the ball for a booundary and then the Indian fans saw the ball was a no ball and during the replys Sanga was the last Sri lankan player to speak so the Indians assumed he said bowl a no ball. But if u understood Sinhalese and not what fake news say, then u would know that he ONLY said 'if he hits the ball he gets runs'.

But pointing (passed the book, by saying he was instructed by the Aussie board) and the Aussie board made it a big issue yet claimed they were doing the right thing.

It's quite disappointing how basically they played down the fact that nothing racial was ever said, the reality is that he did mishear what was said and Symonds just never accepted it. And Tendulkar is right, as captain Ponting should have discussed the matter in the change rooms with the opposition captain, clarified what was said had a beer and moved on. And it's odd that Punter is going the other way when Australia often make the argument that these issues of conflict should be sorted out between the two teams at the end of day's play.

Harbhajan didn't use that term, and I definitely trust Sachin over Ponting who cheated at least 3 times in that test alone which is conveniently forgotten. Thirdly I don't defend the actions of those crowds, but there is absolutely no racial connotation to calling one a monkey in India looking at historical and cultural context unlike in the West. One of the most revered Hindu Gods in India is literally a monkey. I do agree education is needed on matters like this in India; the average Indian would laugh at you if you told them monkey is an insult or malicious term let alone racist.

    • @JohnSavinsMusic

I don't know if Harbhajan said monkey or not, but I think the fact that he said something that sounds so close to a racial slur Symonds was facing from Indian crowds is suspicious. Your reasoning to trust Sachin over Ponting is pretty flimsy, considering Sachin was caught ball tampering. I certainly don't think Symonds would have lied about the incident..whether or not he misheard is conjecture, but looking at the context before and after the game I know who I believe.
