Read the (120) comments, watched the video but a classic story from the 1980s is missing. Viv Richards fails to get bat to ball for a couple of deliveries. Bowler comes up to him... "it's round, weighs about five ounces, red.. - and you are supposed to hit it". Next ball Richards hits it for one of the biggest sixes Benaud had ever seen. Walks down the pitch... "you know what it looks like - go find it"... [laugh].. I forget who the bowler was so if anyone knows please let me know.
Looking back now: growing up in Australia (and male), I could not avoid an immersion in the nuances of cricket. I felt frustrations and joys and many things in between. Slowly, I learned of bad behaviour, racism in South Africa..... was "rightfully outraged" but, in the end, it is nothing more than a game... we played it in primary school. If I never see another ball bowled or learn of another match result, would I have missed out in life? I hardly think so..... I would like to learn who the bowler was in the scene just described..... call it a return, however small (or large I suppose) on a massive investment of time, emotion and effort. Especially now with Covid-19 lockdowns, in a vote on whether cleaners or cricketers should be paid more, I would pick cleaners. Start giving support to the unpaid cleaners as well.
I, like almost everyone else here, enjoyed Richie Benaud's commentary; it formed a cornerstone during my childhood summers as well.

Well, at 84 1/2 he lived beyond the current life expectancy. His time had come and he died in his sleep. That seems to be a peaceful way to go. I knew of him as well so I too mourn the loss. It is something, though, that will claim each and every last one of us. Again, all I have to say is: may he rest in peace.
I remain curious as to who the bowler was in the anecdote I relayed. Apparently the ball went bouncing down some road outside the stadium..... [laugh]
