  • In this video, let's take a look at the R1 Plus LTS from Orange Pi. This is an SBC powered by the Rockchip RK3328 with 4 cores and clock up to 1.5GHz. It has 2 Gigabit Ethernet ports: one intergrated Gigabit Ethernet by MotorComm YT8511C and a USB converted Gigabit Ethernet by the Realtek RTL8153B. With 1GB of DDR3 RAM, the SBC is suitable to use as a soft-router with OpenWRT or headless Linux server. In this video, we will focus the OpenWRT installation and throughput testing.
    During the test, I can see that the R1 Plus LTS throughput is not stable when software offloading is enabled. I hope Orange Pi will spend more effort to fix this, or push the device into openwrt.org so that we can have the official support.
    Video timeframe:
    00:00 - Intro & Unboxing the Orange Pi R1 Plus LTS
    02:17 - R1 Plus LTS Overview & Specification
    03:59 - Install the R1 Plus LTS Aluminium Casing
    05:49 - Connect cables & Power on the R1 Plus LTS
    07:10 - Download & Install OpenWRT into the microSD card
    09:02 - Boot up the R1 Plus LTS with OpenWRT
    10:03 - Access LuCI & Initial Configuration
    13:48 - OpenSpeedTest - WAN to LAN Throughput - No Offloading
    16:07 - iperf3 - WAN to LAN Throughput - No Offloading
    16:56 - iperf3 Reverse - WAN to LAN Throughput - No Offloading
    17:25 - OpenSpeedTest - WAN to LAN Throughput - SW Offloading
    18:51 - iperf3 - WAN to LAN Throughput - SW Offloading
    19:46 iperf3 Reverse - WAN to LAN Throughput - SW Offloading
    Please note that the Orange Pi R1 Plus and the Orange Pi R1 Plus LTS is different. The integrated Gigabit Ethernet controller of the R1 Plus is Realtek RTL8211E and in the R1 Plus LTS, it is the MotorComm YT8511C. Right now, only the R1 Plus is supported by openwrt.org. For the R1 Plus LTS, we need to use build from Orange Pi.

    Nice video as always! I'd like to see you reviewing DFRobot Raspberry CM4 Router. It does not use USB3 for eth1 but a proper PCI Express.

    You could try to put thermal pads onto the nic too. They might get to hot and throttle.

    • @VanTechCorner
      @VanTechCorner  ปีที่แล้ว

      From my observation, most likely this will not happen. I have been testing different SBC such as the R4S, R2S, R68S and the NIC usually doesn't get too hot.

    Hello how are you?
    Excellent video!!! I was thinking about buying an Orange Pi, but I was worried about compatibility and having to compile drivers. A year ago I bought a Banana Pi R2 and I had a lot of problems with drivers. Until today, her internal wifi card is not supported and I couldn't get an external USB wifi card to work.
    Can you make a video installing a USB wi-fi card on your Oprange Pi? Is a video teaching how to make rclone to mount virtual disk and increase storage size a good suggestion? Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge!

      Hi, for USB it depends on the chipset of that USB card. I got one WiFi 5GHz USB with Realtek MT7612U chipset and going to make a video soon.

    You know what would be interesting? See the performance of this router compared with a commercial solution at similar pricing.

    • @VanTechCorner
      @VanTechCorner  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, the Orange Pi R1 Plus LTS is even cheaper compare to the NanoPi R2C, which is having more or less the same specs. However, these kind of SBC/Router is for IT/networking enthusiast who is willing to explore, learn and improve. For a commercial production product, everything should be ready and most of the time plug and play.

    • @zeendaniels5809
      @zeendaniels5809 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@VanTechCorner Sure, but I was suggesting to compare them purely from a performance standpoint. It would be interesting to see if this can effectively replace a commercial solution in a home setup (for enthusiasts, as you said).
      I mean, the price is killer, it's even cheaper than a Ubiquity EdgeRouter X... But can it replace it? That's the question.

    • @VanTechCorner
      @VanTechCorner  ปีที่แล้ว

      Are you talking about the EdgeRouter X runs OpenWRT or stock firmware? If you are talking about the ER-X with stock firmware, nothing I can comment since the 2 products are completely different (chipset, OS, I/O).
      For OpenWRT, I have the testing video of the ER-X available on the channel. I am just sharing the information and don't do the comparison. You can make your own decision, which depends on how you want to setup your system, the budget, network throughput while considering the performance, the user community, OS/firmware development and feature proof... There are a lot of things to consider.

    • @VanTechCorner
      @VanTechCorner  ปีที่แล้ว

      Frankly speaking, when you ask me this question, I think that you are not really familiar with OpenWRT, or still confusing about the mainline OpenWRT and factory-built OpenWRT firmware (OrangePi) . In this case, you should go with the Edge Router X for better support and ease of use. Once you have time and get used to OpenWRT, you can try install OpenWRT on the EdgeRouter X to explore more.

    • @zeendaniels5809
      @zeendaniels5809 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@VanTechCorner Sure, but they do fullfil the same purpose. That's what I'm talking about, if you can use this instead of the ER-X in your home to take advantage of the extra features and future expandability without sacrificing any performance. Maybe a future video 👌🏼

    Are there any boards like this that has multiple LAN ports with at least one LAN port that can provide PoE power to a device plugged into it? That would be sweet because one of these LAN ports will have a AP or Security camera plugged into it. No need to use a separate injector.

    • @VanTechCorner
      @VanTechCorner  ปีที่แล้ว

      For SBC, like this Orange Pi, NanoPi or Banana Pi I don’t any board with this capacity. However, there are routerboards support this. For example, the Wallys DR4028 supports PoE input (to power on), the Mikrotik RB750Gr3, Ubiquiti Edge Router X can run OpenWRT, support PoE in at ether1 to power on and PoE passthru at ether5 to power other devices, such as AP or Camera.

    • @jasonluong3862
      @jasonluong3862 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@VanTechCorner Have you done a video on how to put OpenWRT on a Ubiquity EdgeRouterX? I can’t seem to find it on your video list. If it’s done, the PoE out on it is passive. I get nervous with passive PoE because if the wrong voltage is sent to the end device, it might damage it. This includes accidental plugging in computers to this passive PoE port. This will surely fry the network jack and possibly the whole motherboard on this potentially expensive computer. Passive PoE is one of the most hated networking technologies. Yet, for some reason, manufacturers still do it. At the very least, manufacturers should create a modified passive PoE to first sense if the remote device is capable of PoE before sending its passive power to it. Passive PoE at the moment does not even do this. Once a physical connection is made, the injector blindly sends power.

    • @VanTechCorner
      @VanTechCorner  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jasonluong3862 By default, PoE out (passthru) is disabled (stock FW and OpenWRT), and I don't think it will have any impact on the connected device. Once you select to enable the PoE, you should be aware of the risk. The video is available here th-cam.com/video/VreMamhWOX8/w-d-xo.html, you can search for the video by go to the channel home page, and using the search button. Sometime I will forget to add the video to the OpenWRT Tutorial playlist, that is why you can't find it.

      Nếu chạy Armbian thiết bị của bạn là một máy tính Linux thông thường (giống như máy tính Windows bạn đang bạn dùng). Bạn phải cắm nó vào switch hoặc router để R1 Plus nhận được địa chỉ IP.
      Bạn chỉ có thể nối trực tiếp R1 Plus tới máy tính khi nó chạy OpenWRT.
