  • This is a step-by-step guide to install Pi-Hole on an Orange Pi Zero, which will let you banish ads, trackers and other bandwidth leeches to the shadow realm! Unlike browser-based ad-blockers, Pi-Hole operates at the DNS level and can provide protection for all the devices on your home network from a single convenient location.
    While not officially supported, Pi-Hole runs very well on these devices which are powered by an H2 Quad-core Cortex-A7 CPU @ 1.2GHz and have 512MB of RAM, all for a mere $11 USD. These instructions should also work equally well on any comparable device supported by Armbian.

    I got mine from AliExpress before COVID though the shipping was a bit slow to Canada even then:

    The manufacturer seems to have created an Amazon store that might be faster for some people, but the shipping is more expensive and the product selection not as wide.

    Best video on pi hole on a orange pi zero. It doesn't change much from other devices, but it's best to follow the exact installing procedure, fail proof. Thank you!

    Great video, thanks! I had an Orange Pi sitting around for over a year in a drawer, finally put it to use. The whole installation process went smoothly, exactly as shown. I"m still getting ads on my mobile (android) device, in particular instagram. Now need to play around with the query log and figure out what is going on.

      Just played around with an old Android device I have, and it's not easy to figure out what DNS address it got from DHCP! But using the query log in pihole you should be able to see if it's tracking DNS requests for the IP address of your phone as you're using it. If you want to be absolutely sure you could just set the PIHole DNS address manually by long pressing the Wifi connection.
      There are some limitations of DNS for blocking though... if there isn't a clear way to differentiate requests based on hostname, there's no way for pihole to filter the good from the bad. For the most part I find it does well enough that I don't bother to use any browser-based blockers any longer.

      Thanks! I got it on AliExpress before COVID for about 14 CAD - it took a while to ship but I think they are also available on Amazon now too. I just updated the description with the link to the manufacturer's AliExpress store where I got it

    I just received my orange pi zero in the mail. Thanks for the video, this helped me setup my pi hole! However, I should've listened to you about memory card speed. I'm using some junky SD card and the pi hole interface is very slow :(. Any idea how to remove ads served by google ads on devices that can't run ublock origin? On my pc, I still need to run ublock origin extension on chrome. Can pi hole remove google ads directly?

    • @alextomic1056
      @alextomic1056  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Glad you found it useful! I think if you don't care about the boot time, and you're not using the admin interface a lot, then the sd card speed shouldn't matter too much.
      As for the google ads, I notice that pihole is a bit less aggressive compared to uBlock origin but I don't think I'm seeing those on my devices. The best way to check would be to open a page where you're seeing those ads appear, then take a look on the pihole Query Log and see if the requests are tracked, and whether they are blocked.

      @@alextomic1056 I was having weird issues today. I had to remove DNS pie hole IP to get internet working. I was getting intermittent internet issues. Can this be related to my Pi hole device itself or could it be something with pi hole settings?

    • @alextomic1056
      @alextomic1056  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@matase Probably the best way to check that is to try switching the DNS on your device back to the default (eg. 8.8.8.8 or the router address) . If that stabilizes your internet connection again, then something is probably wrong with the pihole. Are you using an orange pi lite zero with the wifi connection? Perhaps switching to ethernet would be more reliable

    • @matase
      @matase 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@alextomic1056 I was not able to access my router gateway either. Which is weird. Can that be caused by something with the pi hole/orange pi? It's possible that my ethernet cable got lose when i was setting up the pi last weekend.

    • @alextomic1056
      @alextomic1056  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@matase Hard to say for sure but it doesn't sound related to the pihole! When in doubt, rebooting the router seems to be the magic solution to problems like this :)

    Great Video! Question is.. I have Rpi3b+ and i have only 2.6% blocked... what did i wrong? :D

    • @alextomic1056
      @alextomic1056  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! It could be expected if you are already using browser-level blocking, or maybe the sites you visit don't have too many ads as it is :D If you go into the pihole admin page, Tools -> Update Gravity, maybe a refresh of the domains blocklist would help.

    Will this work the same way with banana pi m2 zero?

    • @alextomic1056
      @alextomic1056  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've never used any banana pis, but it looks like that uses a similar Allwinner H2 chipset so it should be capable of running pihole. There is an unofficial Armbian build you could try: www.armbian.com/bananapi-m2-zero/ , or if you flash the standard banana pi image with balena etcher, the pihole installation steps should be similar if not the same. Good luck!

    The problem with Orange pi zero is a bit overheat easily.

    • @alextomic1056
      @alextomic1056  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They can run a bit hot I agree. For mine I set GOVERNOR=conservative and MAX_SPEED=900000 in /etc/default/cpufrequtils ; this should keep the CPU from scaling up too aggressively and limit the maximum cpu frequency. Currently running at 40C without even a heatsink :-)
