    Let's talk about how weird and gross our bodies are. The next one is up for Patreon supporters, coming to YT shortly. I talked with Klaasje again...I may have had a meltdown www.patreon.com/bradybyrne

    I swear to god brandy is gonna legitimately go insane if the game keeps predicting exactly what he’s thinking

      There is a non-zero chance that someone's psychosis has kicked off with the delusion that Disco Elysium is legitimately reading their mind.

    You already asked Kim if he had those voices in his head, he does not, but instead uses his notebook to write his thoughts

      Yes, pretty sure Harry is more or less unique in the way his thoughts speak to him, possibly as a result of _whatever_ caused him to lose his memory.

      @@spectral_force5097 There's enough in the game that points towards Harry always sort of having been like this, especially in regards to personifying his thoughts and having a 'though cabinet'.

      other things imply kim does have his own skills. the clothes merch give kim's outfit their unique stats. but i like the common fan theory that when kim uses his skills, it is just himself. not a seperate mind entity.

      @@spectral_force5097 Some people genuinely organize their thoughts the same way that Harry does; it's not entirely rare, even if people like you, me, or Kim can't innately comprehend it.

    Omg I because of the topics of this video at the end and mentioning the Pale, I realised that throughout the game, Shivers and Esprit Du Corps talk about several events outside of Harry's life, and that may be exposure to the Pale, where memories of people are overlapped. I guess some people may have made that correlation, but that just blew my mind

    That's one of the best playthroughs I've seen of this game. I love when people actually have diacussions in let's plays of narrative heavy games as opposed to just reacting to the funny lines.
    Outside of that i really enjoyed your analysis. It's fascinating how often you can describe in detail behaviours and thoughts i had at points in my life.

    Talking about empathy towards the body - I remember reading Zorba the Greek, and there is one passage where Zorba is trying to get the narrator of the book to stop work for the day and have some dinner and wine; the narrator refuses, to which Zorba replies with 'Remember: your body has a soul, too'.
    Even though this is just a... Simple aphorism, somehow it really 'clicked' with me, and helps to remind me that my body AND my mind are deeply intertwined. By remembering it, I've found it easier to rest, and be kinder to myself.

    Reminds me of the interactions with Coach Physical Instrument. Also I love the dreams, even though they're so far apart, they really go deep on Harry's inner thoughts and feelings.

    I actually never thought about what you mentioned at the end, how if you kept both subjects in one video, one might draw all the aggro so to speak. I think splitting em up was wise, even if it was short!
    self empathy is fascinating to me, and sometimes I wonder if I'm a bit too permissive of my body, but I guess that's a better problem than being too harsh!

  • @Gurianthe
    @Gurianthe 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

    the part about "talking" to the body really fucking hit me, and honestly, kinda made me realize how terrible I am to my own body.
    I wish had this when I was a teenager when it would have been easier to take care of my body properly. now that I'm in my early 30s it feels much for difficult
    I know it's probably dumb but I guess this was the final thing I needed to convince me to go to the gym and actually commit for real. I can definitely feel my body's resentment over how much I've mistreated it
    I've never felt guilty about doing things that are pleasurable but I do feel guilty for not going to the gym and actually get into shape
    that part of the video should really be shown to teenagers in high school and just people I general. that legit shook me

    My therapist recently brought up Internal Family Systems with me. Do you think IFS could apply to Harry? His relationship with his body seems ripe for exploration.

    • @eurobrady
      @eurobrady  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Absolutely. Direct dialog with his parts could do a lot to help heal the relationships with them. The questions often asked in IFS are about what this part is protecting or what that part feels when you do something. I recommend the book No Bad Parts for reading on the subject.

    Fascinating insight into the ways we treat ourselves and how personification can make us more understanding. In the protagonist's case here, I also feel that personifying all his feelings, internalizations, intrusive thoughts, and even his body serve also as a mode of distancing himself from these parts, too. Like the game comments when you take the Boring Cop route--he still *thinks* all those other insane things, he just chooses to express the most boring of them. It's sort of like you say--it's easy for him to think of his body in times of stress and just express sentiments like "Fuck off!" or "I don't want to be this kind of animal anymore."

    Other people have their own skills, though not necessarily in such verbal communication. For instance, Kim has a skilled called Volta Do Mar. This is a reference to a nautical maneuver "where the pilot first had to sail far to the west in order to catch usable following winds, and return to Europe. This was a counter-intuitive sailing direction, as it required the pilot to steer in a direction that was perpendicular to the ports of Portugal." It's Kim's ability to keep tasks and conversations on track.

    As someone who's struggled with being overweight in the past, I also dabbled in personifying and antagonizing my own bodily functions, and not slipping into the spiral of self-critique is definitely something I struggled with back then and am still struggling to this day.
    And, funnily enough, right now as I'm finishing a playthrough with Pain Threshold and Half Light being my primaries, Pain Threshold definitely resonates with me as that aspect of personality that allows you to persevere and overcome (good grief, 'screw-you-for-being-fat' attitude really did a lot of heavy lifting for me back in the day), but, if not kept in check, will be actively harmful as it prods at you for not being able to withstand whatever you might expose your body to.

    You know, empathy is the thought that has the most passive checks in the game (around 900). The vast majority is at 4 points (the majority of skill checks for all thoughts unlock at 4 points, btw). At 4 points you have over 700. However, there are over a hundred more passives that are unlocked by getting that skill up to 6, which is not a huge increase. Skills that you find interesting will give more insight the higher you get them, so if you really like what it has to say, you might want to put a bit more into it. If you get the thought that lets you quit drinking, that gives a point in empathy. It's located in the church across the river if you talk to a crab, plus there is a pair of shoes that gives a +1 too.

    The feeling of using your body as a machine, or just separate of you is really interesting as a non binary person, thinking "ye whatever, we'll just figure how to use this weird flesh thing to our advantage somehow" also getting old sucks, so when I started having the body break down it kinda feels like becoming a mechanist I guess.
