Some people complaining about the condition of the plane: many planes are maintained better than your car, even if there's paint chipping off the window frame. Airworthiness is better that looking pretty, especially if it's an area the passengers will never see. Aircraft "years" are a lot longer than car "years", they don't mean as much as there's plenty of old, perfectly safe planes flying around.
A question from a completely non-pilot person, when you are moving the stick from left to right, and backwards and forwards with your left hand, what is it that you are doing?

This is an everyday occurrence in Miami during the summer. When I fly home, I always catch a early flight or late to avoid storms.
