  • While muscle dysmorphia, the 'male' eating disorder - is not really male, a disproportionate number of men are impacted by it. Researcher Scott Griffiths argues that eating disorders are moving targets, due to constantly changing cultural influences and that the increasing focus on muscularity has led to an rise of men with muscle dysmorphia
    Scott Griffiths is a National Health and Medical Research Council Fellow at the University of Melbourne. He researches eating and body image disorders, including muscle dysmorphia, anorexia nervosa, body dysmorphic disorder, anabolic steroids, and the contributions that masculinity, femininity, and stigma make to these.
    Scott’s research has attracted multiple awards and distinctions, including from the Australian Academy of Science, the Society for Mental Health Research, the North American and Australian and New Zealand Academies for Eating Disorders, and the University of Sydney.
    This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

    This needs to be taken more seriously, tired of seeing dead bodybuilders who people respond to with “haha that’s what happens when you do steroids”? You don’t see a girl from anorexia dying and people commenting “haha that’s what happens when you don’t eat” , not taken seriously enough.

      I must admit I have never thought about it in that manner. It is a real problem. I go to the gym and am sad when I have to take a day off. I understand. I cannot go the PED route bc of how much I know about the destruction they cause internally.

      Thats a good point. But adding a bit of comment Id say that this industry of consumption of drugs-body image-pharmaceutical and other products are mixed to sell and sell and sell products and services. Combining to this we have a hard industry of bodybuilding that creates body patterns to envolve all athleets to fit in one or another body pattern. If we think, all theses stuffs works around money, and here and there we have some type of disorder: imagem, eating, accumulative, obsessive etc. My arguments are empiric for a couple of years working as a bodybuilding judge and my academic final exame is about muscle dysmorphia.

    I've had this disorder for about 3 years, ever since I started working out. Everyone says that I've gained muscle but It's always been difficult to tell. I still feel like the scrawny kid that just started in the gym. From now on I'm going to screw looking in the mirror and keep exercising for health and strength and try not to compare myself to others. Wish me luck!

Even if You loose a tiny bit of muscle mass (that You probably won't even notice, if not notice a small improvement - leanier muscles often look better) You'll regain it in no time (muscle memory is a thing).
      And don't bit Yourself up. If You eat healthy and workout rutinely, You do Your body a favor and You look better than 90% of guys, if not more. A friend of mine developed it about 16 years ago, not long after I met him. He avoided it for a long time, but once he decided he was in a position to try managing his condition, he was able, with support, to not have it control him. I wish I could have made things easier for him, but in the end, all I could do was listen. Your friends will listen to you if and when you feel like you might want to talk it doesn't take your control. You can involve them as much or as little as you want to. I do really hope you're able to find a bit of peace, though.

    As a High Schooler who has been working out since 10th grade (now in 12th) I have experienced this. I always see myself looking at other guys who look bigger then me and feeling insecure and upset because I feel "how come I don't look that big." It comes to the point I think I'm actually starting to lose muscle because I feel like my body isn't as big as it should be. It stinks because I'm so blessed to be given a body that I worked hard to shape but sometimes I can't appreciate it because I'm so focused on what's wrong more than what's right.

    Great speech Scott. I have been going to the gym since I was 17 (25 now) and like anyone who goes to the gym you regularly start to assess your body image. From my personal experience (my own thoughts and those of my friends when discussing this topic) it is a thin line between praising yourself and critiquing yourself. I mainly do the latter and must say it has effected my self confidence loads. I wish this topic was spoken about more openly. Unfortunately I feel this is another mental hurdle that modern day society (mainly through social media) will effect us all (especially those who are teenagers and older). It’s an everyday battle to keep up my body image confidence but I know I will overcome it 👍

    I’ve kinda half cured my bigorexia, used to think about the gym 50% of the day and used to cover up my muscles all the time never wore singlets, always called myself skinny looking at the mirror. Now I’m more confident with my body I wear singlets and I never call myself skinny in the mirror but as I have low self esteem and competitiveness I’m never good enough in anything, but I reckon I’ll be happy once I reach 16 inch arms and I’m very very close. So I would nearly consider myself cured for my standards as I know I’ll live with it my whole life, here’s another example of something other than my physical appearance, i consider my vertical small and that I don’t jump high enough and I’m 5’8 holding a ton of weight 84kgs and can grab the rim and nearly dunk and that’s about a 34-5 inch vertical from what I’ve measured. having the I’m not good enough attitude is great because it pushes you and brings you to a expert level. People can cure bigorexia them self’s they just need to have a big long talk to themselves, like I did and that cured it or half cured for me.

      Nah. The specialty of weightlifting is the muscle gains, strength gains are secondary imo.
      There are far better ways to be healthier (adding in any exercise at all, actually paying attention to what you eat).
      For me, to be healthy I eat healthier. To be stronger, I train to increase strength for specific strength goals which rarely involve weightlifting. To grow my muscles I lift weights.
      All depends on one's goals. Want to have a stronger deadlift? Well, then lifting weights is probably a requirement. Want to punch harder? Lifting weights will have limited impact, especially if you aren't training to punch harder otherwise.

    Believing that bigorexia is steroids adoption automatically related is a big mistake that may lead someone to do not understand that they are affected by it. Thus, you are may suffering of bigorexia even if you never got steroids or legal supplements too (like proteins, creatine, etc.).
    What you have to notice in order to understand if you are affected by this eating disorder condition is other paramount symptoms, like:
    - social isolation, in order to count each calories intake and macros/micros partition every meal of your life avoiding to "lose" control (there are no Christmas, no marriages, no birthdays, no Sundays and any other kind of special occasions: there are just what you *SHOULD* do in order to improve your "poor" condition and to get the best one);
    - check your shape constantly (uncountable times per day);
    - be embarassed to show your condition to other people (e.g.: at the beach) even if it is 99.9% times better than the others one and albeit other people is congratulating to you usually just because they see you walking around;
    - fall into uncontrollable binge eating events when you reach no sense low BF% (leptin is near whole depleted) those you "manage" with fasting periods and very stressing workouts in order to compensate calories intakes (bigorexia does not induce you to purge after binging like bulimia does just because you are aware about muscles catabolysm high risk so you should avoid it as first, but it just differs because the method only concretely being the "faces of the same coin");
    - if you are a gymnast or if you practice any sport that is very related to your condition (e.g.: just a 1 kg may affect performances in gymnastics, or very litlle amount differences may affect a BB condition) things become harder because bigorexia loop is may caused/increased just because it (this lifestyle and sport performances are constantly related).

    I hate advertisers and the pain they cause young kids. The problem is that the ultra rich who play into this have no idea that they're contributing in part to a culture of isolation, which contributes to things like school shootings. It all connects, and money slows the mind...it's quite literally a mind altering substance. The profiteers think they're good people, but the more money you have, the smarter you need to be about your choices. More money = more societal influence. And that kind of power can make a positive culture that favors relationships and human connection, or it can isolate us and tear our entire country to shreds. Which do you think they've chosen?

    One can be obsessed about anything in life. It's one's own personal choice to be consumed by the pursuit of perfection of anything they set their mind to. I think the flip side to this talk is all the guys who are jealous of those who do have the physique they want, and either don't know how or don't want to do what it takes to get it. You can't have everything...some choose certain passions over a social life, and I have nothing against that. It's ironic that the speaker here doesn't look like he has hardly any muscle yet he's condemning guys who are pursuing it with all their energy and resources. Just because his client "recovered" doesn't mean he's satisfied. He probably just needed to adjust his expectations of progress, not quit his pursuit. Reaching for a high standard can bring a lot of meaning to the life of a perfectionist, as long as he doesn't beat himself up mentally along the journey...that, I believe, should be the real take away here.

    as long as you don't let it get to your head and consume you you're good.
    wanting to be bigger, stronger and better is a great thing, as long as it makes you feel better about yourself. when it starts to make you feel worse that's when you have to take a step back and focus on what truly matters.
    also don't use steroids or take drugs, you're better than that

    • @kiraPh1234k
      @kiraPh1234k ปีที่แล้ว

      People with muscle dysmorphia do not want to be "bigger, stronger and better" - they view themselves as smaller than they are. Leading to decisions that make them worse off health wise, sometimes being weaker. Sure, it often leads to them growing their muscles.
      Its similar to looking at anorexia and saying there is nothing wrong with wanting to be "smaller, healthier, stronger and weigh less".
      The fact that these can both lead to dysmorphia are negative things, not great things.
      Does that mean these things are bad? No.
      Does that mean they're good? No.
      What does it mean? Depends on the person. Wanting to lose weight when you're underweight is bad, it leads to negative mental health problems as well as further damaging physical health. Wanting to grow your arms bigger when they are the biggest in the world is also fairly bad, as you will be pretty much required to use drugs to achieve such massive growth and it leads to the same negative mental health problems.
      I happen to disagree with your stance on drugs though. People should use whatever they like. Drugs often have very negative consequences to QoL, but a person is not lesser for using them. Alcohol is hands down one of the worst drugs anyone could use, and yet its usage is accepted and even considered "normal" to many despite the hundreds of thousands it kills every year and the millions of lives it negatively impacts every day.
      People view drinking as a fun event to do with friends, despite it doing more damage to them than for example Meth or Testosterone.
      And yet, they should still be allowed to use it and not looked down on for using it.
      The drug part probably feels contradictory but if I keep explaining then I don't think it will help clarify what I am saying anyways.

      This is arguibly the dumbest comment i havw seen so far. Olympic athletes care about their performance rather than physical appearance. Having muscle dysmorphia is the feeling of being small and feeling like your body is not jacked enough. Its a never ending cycle of working out + conditioning + dieting + anabolic use. Every single person with actual muscle dysmorphia takes steroids or will take it in the future becuase their natural limit is not enough. And enven though they spend most of their days working out, they can never accept their bodies.

    • @kiraPh1234k
      @kiraPh1234k ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not even close.
      It has nothing to do with wanting to be bigger and everything to do with being unable to perceive your muscles as big or growing.
      Also, women do not prefer muscular men... there is a level of muscularity that many women do find attractive, and a level at which they no longer find it attractive.
      Your comment is the same as saying "anorexia is just the realization that society rewards skinny women and men prefer skinny women", when in reality again, its about the sufferer being unable to objectively analyze their body. And similarly, men like small women to a certain degree, then it hits a point where it is no longer attractive.
      Also, women suffer from muscle dysmorphia as well, not just men. Just like men also suffer from anorexia.
