It’s not even just about comparing your body, it’s the mere fact of seeing people having more fun than you, seeing people who have a lot of friends while you’re struggling to make some and you’re lonely, seeing people get married and have families and go traveling when you haven’t found someone yet and you don’t have money, seeing people have successful businesses when you’re failing, lost and confused about what you want to do for a career and finding your purpose..social media is toxic in many ways
No matter what your interests are, IG will ALWAYS show you pics of models in its feed. My recommendation would be to feel free to unfollow or hide the feeds from people who by photoshopping their image or not make you feel insecure - even if it's a friend or someone you know.
This had a great message...would have been nice to use some more examples with younger boys since they are going thru these insecurities as well....seeing the tall, muscles for days, athletic, handsome boys/men on these platforms as well.
Super late to this, but I think it would be better for people with that experience first hand to be talking about the subject on men’s standards these days.
This is a beautiful Ted Talk. It is true they focused on women and men experience it too, but as a woman, I love to see women uplift other women. I love women! We are stronger together.
Social media platforms could serve as vehicles for propagating body negativity (or even body shaming), but what may require equal - or more - attention is the vulnerability of the mostly young women bedeviled with many insecurities. What’s supposed to be done to give them a robust self-image in the first place? Having the right disposition does matter to render one impervious to pernicious ideas being bandied about online.
_Beauty comes from the Creator, who opened up the world in glory. You are beautiful because God is beautiful. The body is a speck of dust and water, an infinitely small circle drawn around your soul, and built to keep love out. See, then, the Great Rays shining in your mind and in all living things. The world is already an image; you deal with images of images of images and 10 times removed from reality. This is the source of your sorrow. Call out in Love to the Creator in the depths of your soul. Be still. Turn off your illusions and allow truth to dawn on your holy mind. I can explain no further._
Man I feel bad for this speaker, I can also relate with having body image issues. However, we can't ignore the effects of popular media and its perfection culture. When i was in school, there used to be a teenage magazine called PETITE. The magazine was rejected because it was possibly NOT GOOD. It had 9 ISSUES, meaning its publication was stopped. Because of its negative body image effects on teens. I feel bad for humans who don't like their own body types.
They probably should have talked about boys doing the same because it would made they’re message even bigger with both sides suffering equaling more people having the same problem. The hilarious part though is that teens my age (14) barely even use the social media’s they said, the one we actually use is discord. In this app you don’t use filters or literally anything, no stories with photos, only adults use Insta or snap so please get your facts right.
@Truth Seeker They are not trying to make you "feel better". They are saying why we waste time comparing ourselves to stuff that's not real and even ppl who are seemingly "perfect" can not like themselves too and overedit their pictures.
@Truth Seeker bruh, people like relatable people. Would u like them to make fun of yall's insecurities instead? Self hate really goes deep when you arnt healed.

Yeah I know, you can’t escape it, the only way is to just not be on social media :(

I totally Agree with this!
You should do it ! If you feel the calling to. Someone’s got to do it , why not you? Don’t tells others to , when you’re capable.

It's not only instagram. It's everywhere we look these days.

I seen as less than worthless by this society that I've been forced to be utterly dependent on...

Your narrative is rich and engaging; akin to a book that was rich and engaging in its story. "Your Body Your Temple" by Sophia Wintergreen
