I bought an OP34 (I’m a little guy) in 2019 and just walked into the boutique and bought it with no fuss. I wear it every day and still adore it as much as the day I bought it.
I worked for Rolex from 2005-2010, and I find it very hard to believe they "can't" produce enough to meet demand. Even 15 years ago Rolex was very concerned about avoiding the kind of market dilution problems that plauged Omega in the late 60's and early 70's. When it's something every middle class family has in a dresser somewhere it stops becoming an aspirational item. I think they found a convenient excuse to curtail supply without enraging their dealer network who were extremely hostile to this sort of suggestion years before.
They make plenty. I can buy any Rolex I want if I was willing to pay the markup. The problem is they end up in with resellers. If they found a way, or if they wanted to prevent this, all of the BS would be over.
You say this, but just about every family has an older Rolex Datejust purchased in the 60s, 70s, 80s, or 90s, perhaps worn daily or perhaps stashed somewhere. I wouldn't say that's stopped Rolex from being an aspirational item.
@@nkoonkukoo personally I don't know anyone on either side of my family who would never have one. I don't even think it's a financial thing, because if you make it a financial priority in life maybe they could have gotten it, they just saw no point in it. Not everyone see's the point in paying that kind of money for a watch, even in the 60s, 70s, 80s or 90s. It was always the cheapest way to tell time on my wrist somewhat accurately. EDIT: This is not to add to the discussion on wether it is an aspirionational item or not, just wanted to add my two cents to the argument that not every family has a rolex.
My Dad got one from work for an anniversary. He mentioned selling it the other day and I was like please don't do that. The watch my grandfather was given for a work anniversary is such a cool thing to have and I think passing down these watches will be a great family heirloom.
One year ago.. I walked into an AD to put myself on waitlist for OP41. Surprisingly, I walked out with silver dial OP41 at retail.. I know it’s not the most popular dial color but I love the watch as I wear it every day
I had the opportunity to try this watch in a special event my dealer organized for regular customers a couple of years ago. I am not a wealthy person by any means, but I have a history with the store. This watch is beautiful. I even questioned if it was a better all around watch than the DJ 41mm. If you can get it at retail price, it is a bargain. It will last forever....your kid and grand kid will wear it, and if you don't like it, put it for sale and even make some money...what is not to like about that? 🤷♂️.
I was not a big fan of Rolex and didn’t understand all of the “ooh” and the “aaah” until I tried one on. If you don’t need the date window, OP is the perfect one watch in its price range (retail, of course).
I have a 1972 Oyster perpetual which cost 605 Swiss Francs at the time (around CS150). I last serviced it 12 years ago and it's still pretty accurate; it looses about 4 seconds/day which I think it's still within the Rolex's spec's.
I recently bought an Explorer Oct 2020, greymarket. Now I'm thinking, Rolex didnt want to sell it to me, so how can it be my true watch partner? Im getting Christmas presents sent to me from Grand Seiko 1 year after I bought a watch from them, they invited me for dinners even though Im a nobody. It puts a damp cloth on my love for Rolex.
At a current Chrono24 range of $10,000 - $14,000 USD for this dark blue dial version, Rolex can keep their Oyster Perpetual - there's so many other watches of much greater quality that can be had for that or less. What Rolex are doing constraining supply to drive demand is yet another example of how they're a marketing company that prioritises profit over all else - not the type of company I personally want to promote or do business with.
My wife & a I got the OP because it is the epitome of a Rolex - a simple 3-hander that is also rugged and waterproof. It is THE signature Rolex as it was an OP that put the brand on the map, and it continues to serve as the backbone for all their popular timepieces currently most sought after. That said, I can’t ever imagine paying what some are to get the current ones.
I have always loved watch’s.I owned a small plumbing company and was blessed with a wife and 4 children. With that large family came even bigger bills so I was never able to get into the luxury side of watch’s.I owned a Tag aguaracer for many years and I loved it.I’m retired now and the children are grown so I always thought I would be able to buy my first Rolex at this point in my life. When I went shopping for them I was in for a rude awakening !! I just can’t bring myself to pay $17,000 for the submariner that I always wanted.
Glad ppl like Teddy are speaking out about the insane 2ndary market. The bubble needs to pop. 7-10+ g's for 36mm explorer? nutty. The effect? Souring on Rolex as a brand.
Two years ago I went to my Rolex AD convinced I wanted a OP. After trying one on and wearing it for a few minutes I wasn't so sure. I left to give it some thought and a few weeks later bought an AquaTerra instead. The AquaTerra was more watch and for less money than the OP. I still look at Rolex from time to time but with dealerships not having any stock and secondary market prices going crazy I doubt I'll ever buy one.
I sincerely dislike the unattainability of entry level Rolexes. Great watches, yes, but not being able to buy one or having to pay the grey market premium.... I would rather look into buying a Grand Seiko.
As a valued or overvalued watch, I likely will never be able to justify the cost for a Rolex. The Tissot Gentleman is much more suited for me and my budget! A very informative video nonetheless.
@@NCSheriff7 Agreed! Tissots are dime-a-dozen in North America. But still have not seen anyone wearing my Rado d-Star 200 dressy dive watch in US, Canada or in Europe. I don't wear my Rado as much anymore because of my Rolex OP but still cherish it. My first swiss automatic watch.
For me the Grand Seiko SBGA211g beats the Rolex OP any time and they cost basically the the same. With the difference that you can walk into any AD of GS and walk out with a watch on your wrist. I think enthusiasts like me start to get angry with Rolex because in the end they’re great watches but they don’t live up to the hype around them. GS on the other hand surpassed expectations of watch enthusiasts all over the world which gained them so much success. The OP only is the better option if you care more about the brand name than the watch itself period. Of course you can like the OP better and if you just feel that itch, nothing else will scratch it, but there are so much better options for the same price you definitely should consider.
Problem with GS is it's not offered in different sizes like the OP. I'd rather not have a watch that says Rolex on the dial, but would prefer GS to just say GS or Seiko so if anyone asks, nobody ever does, I wouldn't have to say GRAND Seiko after they show me their lowly SKX. Too bad for branding..
They are totally different watches and (although I have not yet held either) cannot see why you are comparing them other than to bash Rolex. Do you have the GS or planning to pick one up anytime soon then?
I am not bashing Rolex 😂 It’s just my own observation handling a lot of different watches over the last decade I am in this hobby. And yes I plan to pick up a GS next year, because their pieces just blow my mind while Rolex just gets more boring to me personally, honestly.
Owner of a Snowflake (for over a year now) here. It's awesome. The dial and movement are absolutely killer. But the OP is thinner, sleeker. That's something you can't deny. And the bracelet on the OP is a lot better. From a pure wearing experience the OP is just better.
The GS SBGX263 is incredibly beautiful. The ticking (quartz) is unbelievable smooth, hits marks perfectly, and arguably has a soul. Having vintage watches off by minutes a day I don't prioritize accuracy. But in over a year of ownership my GS has lost only a single second. Hard not to appreciate that. I lucked out, bracelet fits me perfect (no micro adjustments).
Spot on…. The colour, the proportions, the simplicity, the placement of the coronet and of course, the awesome oyster bracelet, sheer perfection in a time only watch.
The thing is: I get the exclusivity is seen as an attribute by watchmakers like Rolex but it came to a point to where, it seems like people who can get them for retail want them for their resell value and most of the real watch enthusiasts are left without even a chance to get their hands on them. This is a problem in the industry, in my opinion at least.
It’s the biggest double edge sword in watchmaking right now. Sure the interest in your brand is high now but you don’t run a huge risk of alienating consumers and having them look elsewhere.
The rhodium 39 has been sitting in the box for a while now, relatively unloved compared to the old Pepsi, shinier fluted DJ41, and even an old white-dialed Explorer 2. Recently, I've taken to wearing it again and have been reminded of how much I like it, mostly for its simplicity and understated elegance. I'm really starting to favor three-handers. I got tired of setting dates and since living through two years of sweatpants and Netflix, stopped caring anyway. I'd venture to say that the OP perfectly balances its utility under a suit sleeve and with pair of jeans. It is stripped of all presumption, such as the date (got a cell phone for that), rotating numbered bezel (never use them), dual time function (don't care what time it is in Cairo). The irony is that while many buy a Rolex because it screams Rolex, the OP flies under the radar and says the person wearing it really just wanted a great watch.
Just got mine a few weeks back, I’ll be heading home this Friday to officialy put it on for the first time. Best part about it, got it at retail from my AD.
Everyone complaining about rolex, I walked in an AD and picked up a 36mm OP in royal blue. It is one of the best watch for the money. The polishing/brush finish is superb and the oyster bracelet wears like a dream and built like a tank. 70+ PR and holds value. Yes they’re not the best but “one of the best”! They are the benchmark…Stop crying!
Teddy you are (again) spot on about the OP “at retail “. The problem is that , presently it is very difficult to buy a Rolex at retail and it seems like it will continue to be indefinitely. So really, WHO CARES, let’s talk about watches that are available regardless of the price.
Maybe this is an unpopular opinion in this comment section, but I for one think that the market decides a product's general value, not subjective opinions of one or many reviewers, and their specs sheet. Watches are not just its specs on paper. A certain watch and its value is also the ideas, the designs, the society's overall sentiment of it, the prestige conveyed by wearing it, the brand it carries, is all worth money to the consumers too. Not just the technical specs. Speaking of technical specs, let's not ignore their technically superior movement compared to pretty much anything else in almost all price classes (if not all) when it comes to precision and reability, which is something that is valuable too. The reability of that movement-family is pretty much unparalleled, and none other watch producer dare to claim +- 2 sec for a purely mechanical movement. It is apparently worth something to the masses. Rolex don't do haute horology however, which is what you could get for the same price as a submariner on the secondary market. So it all depends what the customer wants. But a lot of customers do want what rolex offers, and that, along with what they are willing to pay for it, is its value, whether you personally agree to it or not.
I own a 1965 Rolex Oyster - case 1003 and movement 1570. I've worn it off and on for 20 years. It is a great watch that has held its value. Money in the bank on my wrist. Alas, the time is coming to sell it and pocket a big profit. Starting to like watches I can service myself.
while looking for a watch for my wife - the ROLEX AD , offered a pink OP 31mm . we were looking at possible a BREITLING - we jumped on the ROLEX. it is a great size for her. she is now a watch person. ~ JDS/CT
I was on a waiting list for a year and a half and surprisingly got the email that my watch had arrived. I opted for the green 41 and I’m very happy to have managed to get one through official channels rather than the grey market. I always enjoy your educational and unbiased perspective on brands. I wish you and your team more success.
1.5 year isn't much at all considering what others are waiting for other models. I hope one day I may able to afford a 36 Oyster perpetual, not sure which dial yet, green screams Rolex and golf or tennis.
@yasmin878 I’m considering going on a wait list for one for my 40th and have a question if you wouldn’t mind answering please? Did you have purchase history of other watches/jewellery with that dealer already when you joined the Rolex wait list, or did you make any other purchases after going on the list to try and get bumped up the list?
@@howlsy6388 hi, don’t mind answering at all. I never purchased anything from the Authorised Dealer, I only went once, had a look and asked to be placed in a list. Never visited the boutique again, In fact I had forgotten all about it. Whether I was lucky or whether the AD worked in an honest manner I’m not sure.
I really like Rolex and until recently anyone could have owned one if they were willing to spend $5k for a used one (wished I would have). I also like Patek Philippe but never planned on owning one. With modern pricing and my current income a Tissot, Hamilton, or Bulova are looking like my next watch. I own a couple of Swiss watches but it seems either a Seiko or Invicta (gasp) sub homage finds it way to my wrist. They maintain good accuracy and in the world of working class guys, they hold up and look good. Not everyone spends time looking at a watch with a loop inspecting brush strokes.
Great watch with one glaring exception: If those double indexes at 3, 6, 9 went back to single sticks like the OP39 (black or white, not the other varieties) then I'd be lined up to get one. As is, I much prefer the previous generation white or black OP39.
Teddy, your straightforward watch review videos like this I think have become some of the best on TH-cam. Really nice work, keep it up! One note; I’m a die hard watch guy and a fine jewelry and watch salesman, and one amazing thing about Rolex watches is that all their indices, hands, and applied Rolex coronet are made from precious metal! 18kt YG/RG/WG, or Platinum. Completely unnecessary, but completely badass and so luxurious given the price point. Always a good selling point for me!
I was dead set on purchasing an OP as a 40th birthday present to myself. I have a number of watches and have never really been drawn to Rolex before, but the new OP41 appealed to me with its simplicity and a lack of the blingy showiness I often associate with Rolex. I thought it would make an excellent every-day wear watch. But the cultish requirements required for the “privilege” of purchasing a entry-level brand piece are inexcusable and drove me away. No, I don’t think you should have to present gifts to an AD, or beg to be put on a list, or buy a bunch of other watches from the AD in order to buy your way into the brand. So I didn’t. And I expect I’m not the only one. I would bet good money that Rolex will have a real Harley-style brand issue in ten years, where their only customers are their existing customers - a slowly shrinking market dynamic made from an inability to bring new customers into the fold. On the other hand, I’m really loving my Oris and Omega, and will likely add a few more of both brands to my collection over the coming years.
Well said. I am celebrating a significant milestone in my life as well and was set to purchase an OP. After the recent turn of events I purchased an Oris and a beat up old Fiat Spider instead. I won't participate in silly Brand games.
You want the OP today? You should have ordered it last year. I did and visited the AD once since. Got the call this week and collected it yesterday. Beautiful watch.
To me, a Rolex on the wrist is a sign of achievement. It’s earned by way of success, endurance and, sometimes, the appreciation of others. The wearer is deserving. Whether it’s a so called entry level reference or not, it’s still a Rolex. Certainly, many wear a Rolex before the foundation is laid and on them the significance is lost. Long live the Rolex and kudos to those who wear one as a source of pride and not envy.
It's just a watch, you buy it with money. It's not a certificate of achievement, the guy in the store will just give it to you for cash without even looking at your CV. And it's far more accessible with particularly poor financial decisions (loans, crime) than with good ones.
As a OP 39mm black dial owner, the 39 size is slightly better than the 41mm but that 5mm Easy Link is completely worth it for anyone thinking about the 2nd market. The 39OP does Not have that 5mm extension. my 2nd watch is the 39mm Explorer 1 with the 5mm extension, that 5mm extension is Such a luxury! but the classic looks and simplicity of the op is why my explorer is my "fun" watch and the OP is my dress AND fun watch. (for those wondering, the 39mm explorer bracelet does fit my 39mm op case and hell yes its perfect)
I was watching the watch market for a long period and I decided to get myself a Tissot Gentleman 18k gold I am very happy with it because in my opinion it’s a very beautiful watch
I've had a bunch of Rolex watches, and previously had a OP39 in black, and it was easily one of my favorite! I now have a sub, but really would love to pick up an OP41 to my collection.
I purchased the Blue OP39 in 2018, at the time it didn’t appear very popular but I thought it the perfect size. I was shocked to see the price has jumped on the used market just because it’s discontinued.
im considering a few options here. i have a place to get a new OP36 from my local AD at retail. but for less money i can get an older nicer fluted bezel 36 DJ two tone with a diamond dial. in addition to that i can have a full set cartier tank for about the same price. what are your thoughts because spending 6k on a watch is a big enough deal for me
Hey Teddy! I would love to see a review of the seiko sur449p1! To me it seems like a great first time watch that I might get, would love to see you explain!
Anyone know if the oyster bracelet on the OP is the same as the oyster bracelets on the DJ and/or Explorer 1? (For the current models only and ignoring size differences)
I hesitated getting the grey OP 2 years ago and it's my biggest watch regret. I couldn't even see the new silver and gold version so i bought a Grand Seiko 37mm and at 1/3 the price it's more watch. My heart still aches for grey dial.
For me Tudor BB58 and Omega Aqua Terra are the best entry level luxury watches. Even at retail, considering what Oyster Perpetual offers, it is still overpriced
It's a great looking watch, super-clean, just the way I like them... But I'd never buy a Rolex, and not because they are insanely over-priced (even at the base retail value, not to mention the current scalped prices) but because of the clientele it tends to attract, and consequently what people who are not into watches think about Rolex owners. It's the same reason why I would not buy a Porsche-I am at a point in life where I could afford those simple luxuries but I just don't want to be perceived as part of the crowd these brands tend to attract. I'll admire their craftsmanship from afar and sport my GS (which is also becoming ridiculously overpriced but at least 'the masses' don't know about it so you'll never see it on a hand of a Russian oligarch).
This says more about you than it does about those who choose to wear a Rolex or drive a Porsche. It's ironic that you care so much about what others think that it would prevent you from otherwise enjoying something you like (Assuming it's to your taste and you could afford it) than being caught up in your own preconceived notion. Most people who do enjoy these items likely care much less about what you think. Full disclosure, I have a small Rolex collection - all of them have increased in value quite a bit over the years while I get to enjoy them. Enjoy your Grand Seiko - they're great watches. But probably not the best approach to size people up based on what they wear or drive.
@@manuelz811 yep… I was thinking the same thing as I read the original post. I want a Porsche and will enjoy driving it without giving it a second thought for what people think of me or the typical Porsche owner. I couldn’t care less.
@@GeorgeFrideric71 Putin has a lot of watches, and I don't think it's accurate to call him an oligarch. He's the guy that can get oligarchs killed if they get out of line. Putin also has impeccable taste and resources. Trump, on the other hand...
The OP is a quintessential Rolex that holds to the key principles of the brand. Especially with the new movement that provides greater accuracy, a longer reserve and greater service interval while keeping fantastic looks and quality at the forefront the model, especially in blue, is a Rolex to be owned and worn. Unfortunately, as my AD indicated, the new colors and no-date sub have caused Rolex to prioritize the scarce movements away from the base colors of the OP, which is a shame. If I were to design this for myself I would have kept the 39mm and incorporated a smooth bezel but I would be satisfied with the 36OP in blue if it were to become available. The Tissot ticks most of the boxes however don’t see it being the same heirloom piece nor something that will appreciate in value.
Mr. Baldassarre I really appreciate your passion, enthusiasm and knowledge of the watch brands. I am in Canada but always looking forward to your uploads on youtube whether is a review or an introduction of various brands. The Rolex situation has frustrated many watch lovers and enthusiasts, unless someone really wants a certain model in Stainless steel and go to the secondary market to get much over the retail price, it is better just put the purchasing action of Rolex aside and see how it goes.
I appreciate the support. Rolex has been frustrating to cover from my perspective. I have reviewed two models all year and it always ends with the same note. Great watch, but not worth the market value. I love the brand but this has become a fatiguing reality for everyone who loves watches.
@@TeddyBaldassarre Yes, I totally agree. Few days ago when I was at my AD(he is not a Rolex Dealer) purchasing another watch, a customer of his was complaining about how he wanted to purchase a rather common SS Rolex but has to be put on such a long waiting list and he said he might not even get it eventually. I sat there waiting and almost wanted to jump into the Rolex's topic. Difficult for me but I choose to not to engage because I thought if I did, I might upset that customer more.
As a person who traveled to few rolex stores around Europe with no luck to buy one I started with a watch for her in my home country the datejust 36 with fluted bezel and jubilee bracelet. Now Iam on the list for a watch for me. When it will come, who knows...
Teddy - as a sales professional I congratulate you on a very clever ‘reverse sell’ from a Rolex that nobody can buy (even those who can afford to) down to a Tissot that most people could afford I own a Tissot Gentleman identical to the one shown in this video and can happily endorse just how fantastic the watch really is - it out performs many $2k watches never mind $1k dollar watches - in terms of movement, fit and finish it has a Tag Heuer Carrera beat (also a great looking watch) - and when you consider the price / heritage the Tissot is just a no brainer If someone is looking for a taste of the Oyster Perpetual the Tissot is a total no brainer - just buy one already If you must spend over $5k on a watch avoid Rolex and buy a Grand Seiko - better made, better movements, better finished and no stigma
Hypothetically yes. However, you can't find that watch new for the retail pricing. Instead the amount you would pay for it, could allow you to buy much better watch from Omega, etc.
I own an Oyster Perpetual and it is a nice watch. I wear the GS Snowflake everyday. They cost close to the same, but the GS is a better watch, especially if you like a date.
Fully agreed. i have the 41mm OP (bright blue), and the GS Snowflake. The OP is a great watch with class, but the Snowflake is in another league! And for the same price? Even more impressive.
Rolex has become the Pappy Van Winkle of the luxury watch business.... At around 6K the OP is a great value.... But New ones, if you can find them are going north of 12K.. I'll stick with my Omega Aqua Terra for now. Hopefully, somewhere in the future the madness ends but I doubt it as long as there are people who are willing to overpay...
Like you, I really like this watch, however I will never pay 2x retail for this watch. For that kind of money I'd rather spend it on a Zenith El Primero sport.. .. however like I said I do like the OP...it's super clean and well designed. Rolex needs to solve this issue..
I have a 7.375" (187mm) wrist and I still like a 36mm watch. Something nice about understated. Not to mention 36mm and smaller were commonplace with men years back.
On my GMT Master II 16710A with a D serial #. On the certificate of warranty the red stamped lettering is not typical. Usually the red letters indicate a date offered for sale in the US (I believe) and consists of five letters. For example red lettering A ROTL would indicate July 12, 1983. On my certificate the lettering is T SA. Where can I find what that code means?
I bought my Submariner in 2006 for $4k out the door. That was plenty and it wasn't any better quality than my dad's Tag Heuer Classic 2000. In fact his Tag's clasp didn't rattle constantly like my Sub did and does. I've switched to Breitling.
New to your channel, first vid. Very informative, much appreciated. My only nice watch is a Bulova & I goes great with any night out. Looking to upgrade, I think I’ll go with the Tissot then eventually move into the Rolex. Thanks again, new subscriber here!!!
Great Video TB. After getting back into the watch game. I purchased my first Rolex a Sub in 1998 for a nice 30% discount. Today it's a lot about value retention, hype, hype and hype etc. Rolex is still the King. People either want to get one or they want to get another one. GS/Omega etc is nice but just not in the same league for all around value proposition. People can buy Rolex, wear it for a yr and two, and then get their $ out of the watch. Try doing that with most other brands. The more this happens - the more it supports Rolex as an investment piece. Because the models are timeless and change very little, people don't get so easily burned by watches going in and out of fashion. The AD world is very confusing and disappointing, but eventually I found a great AD and now I have added 3 more Rolexes. Nowadays one can't just walk into a store and buy a new Rolex, but that's life - you either deal with it or whinge about it.
with all due respect, why just not buy tudor black bay 41mm? same blue dail same bazel, no date at both, but the tudor is half price with jubilee bracelet. thanks.
@@Alan-cl2ix Perhaps if you are a 5'8" girly man a 36mm would be the way to go. Over 6' men need 41mm - 43mm to go with their bigger/stronger/more domineering stature.
Good breakdown of the watch and posturing of this watch Teddy. This exact watch, along with the Explorer 1 are currently on my list of "next to buy". The reality is that I'll most likely purchase the one that an AD can get me first!
Great review, I would agree with pretty everything said, I'm one of those guys that bought the OP41 Tiffany, because I like the colour, it was a little toppy at the time, £13,500, but the prices we see a few weeks ago in Europe was nuts, £40,000 - £55,000 is crazy, it's dropped the last week and is dropping still, do you think we will see another hike when its discontinued this year? I'm also on the look out for a Silver dial also but I can't find one full set.
I got the yellow 36mm OP after about 7 months of waiting. I've never owned a Rolex before and had no history with the AD. I was told it would be faster, but we had 4 months of lock down here in Switzerland in spring 2021.
Classics and Dress watches are back in fashion. Dress watches don't need date. Also buy the watch to wear it and enjoy it, invest in other things, watches are not a safe investment.
Teddy... new fan... You have engaging content filled with valuable information. After spending the past 5 plus years charging smart watches, updating firmware, and buying the next new thing... I've had if with watches that need a wall charger. I am going back to wearing a proper mechanical watch. Does it matter what year the watch comes out? I like the Tissot Gentleman in this video but it's from 2019. I don't like the newer one with the crosshairs on the dial. Would it be better to wait for the 2022 models? Cheers... keep it the great work!!!
Agree with you 100%. Retail price point at the higher side of reason. I want a blue, a diamond slate and a diamond MOP. A silver would be nice too. Op my favorite next to the GMT II.
I inherited a 1958 Rolex OP Datejust about 20 years ago. Last year I had it restored by Rolex. The watch keeps time great, but looks dated. It would nice to have a newer version even if it were not a Datejust. However, the cost of a new one is prohibitive. Instead, I bought an Omega Aqua Terra. I also have a Tissot Powermatic 80 with a blue dial as in the video. Both the Omega and Tissot get many compliments.
Can anyone tell me what the groove (which looks like a safety latch) on the oyster clasp is for? It does not serve any purpose and looks like something it's not.
I'm glad that I purchased my OP39 blue dial in 2017. The double indices at 3 6 and 9 of the current model spoil the symmetry of the dial. I much prefer the all single indices on the earlier version.
I just happened to pick up this watch 2 weeks ago from local AD, and it joined my collection with another DJ41 blue 126334. Conclusion: Once a blue, always a blue.
Hey Teddy I've wanted to grow out of my comfort zone and get a square/rectangular face watch, could you maybe do a video of how to choose a watch of that style?
Dear Teddy, thank you for another excellent review! I have bought my OP34 blue explorer face in August 2020, so just before the new OPs were released. Do you think I should swap it for the new OP36? I wouldn't take the new OP34 due to the caliber.
I bought an OP34 (I’m a little guy) in 2019 and just walked into the boutique and bought it with no fuss. I wear it every day and still adore it as much as the day I bought it.
Awesome. What color dial did you go with?

I worked for Rolex from 2005-2010, and I find it very hard to believe they "can't" produce enough to meet demand. Even 15 years ago Rolex was very concerned about avoiding the kind of market dilution problems that plauged Omega in the late 60's and early 70's. When it's something every middle class family has in a dresser somewhere it stops becoming an aspirational item. I think they found a convenient excuse to curtail supply without enraging their dealer network who were extremely hostile to this sort of suggestion years before.

You say this, but just about every family has an older Rolex Datejust purchased in the 60s, 70s, 80s, or 90s, perhaps worn daily or perhaps stashed somewhere. I wouldn't say that's stopped Rolex from being an aspirational item.
@@RanenPo Wonder who those families are. I know non of them. I do have my dads Omega from the 80's somewhere in a dresser though..
@@RanenPo every family... where you from?
Sounds like your Dad works at a great place. I'd hang onto it, as well. I got a 20 and then a 30 year "pin", from my work which I use as tie tacks...
One year ago.. I walked into an AD to put myself on waitlist for OP41. Surprisingly, I walked out with silver dial OP41 at retail.. I know it’s not the most popular dial color but I love the watch as I wear it every day
Thats the exact one I want! Lucky
Congrats! Thats pretty much the dream.
have it too and love it 😍 so simple and elegant.
That is an absolutely beautiful watch.
You picked up the best colour in my opinion. The indices pop.
Hey, How much did you both pay?
I have always loved watch’s.I owned a small plumbing company and was blessed with a wife and 4 children. With that large family came even bigger bills so I was never able to get into the luxury side of watch’s.I owned a Tag aguaracer for many years and I loved it.I’m retired now and the children are grown so I always thought I would be able to buy my first Rolex at this point in my life. When I went shopping for them I was in for a rude awakening !! I just can’t bring myself to pay $17,000 for the submariner that I always wanted.
If you can afford it.. treat yourself sir. You deserve it.
Go to your local AD, share your story and you have a good chance of being rewarded with your sub!!
Totally agree, paying twice over retail is just plain stupid. Go for an Omega or Breitling instead.
I love both! I bought a black aqua terra last summer and I am also waiting blue OP. The waiting line is 2-3 years :)
I went the opposite road. Sold my Aquaterra and can't be happier with my new 41mm (really 39,5) OP.

Well I was wrong. I did end up buying a blue OP39 a month ago. Now I have an AT and an OP and love them both :)
I sincerely dislike the unattainability of entry level Rolexes. Great watches, yes, but not being able to buy one or having to pay the grey market premium.... I would rather look into buying a Grand Seiko.
Or an Omega!
Just bought a green one from an AD at retail. Waited for two years but worth the wait!
Why can’t you get one?
@@BP-or2iu For the reasons discussed in this video. AD select customers who spend cash on useless items.
I was put on the list for a 41mm R.OP and it took 6 months to get it I don’t think that’s bad at all
As a valued or overvalued watch, I likely will never be able to justify the cost for a Rolex. The Tissot Gentleman is much more suited for me and my budget! A very informative video nonetheless.
I agree. Tissot has real history.
A coworker saw my seiko sarb035 and thought I was a secret millionaire. In this hobby, only you know how much premium you are paying.
I just wish the Gentlemen was 2mm smaller

I have my eye on a green or blue Tissot Gentleman myself. So much bang for the buck.

I am not bashing Rolex 😂
It’s just my own observation handling a lot of different watches over the last decade I am in this hobby.
Got my OP41 black dial after a 3-month wait. Have had it 60 days and it’s my daily wear. Love its look and simplicity.
Definitely my favourite piece in the Rolex catalogue. 💯👌😎
Clean and simple.
No Mercedes hands no cyclope bubble.
With the Rolex quality standard.
Really wish this model wouldn't have gotten dragged into the hype. This and the Explorer are my favorite models and I can't get either at retail now.
The simplicity is the king. Rolex perfected it and took it to a new high!
Spot on…. The colour, the proportions, the simplicity, the placement of the coronet and of course, the awesome oyster bracelet, sheer perfection in a time only watch.
@@itsallrobbishWell said. What color dial do you prefer?
The thing is: I get the exclusivity is seen as an attribute by watchmakers like Rolex but it came to a point to where, it seems like people who can get them for retail want them for their resell value and most of the real watch enthusiasts are left without even a chance to get their hands on them. This is a problem in the industry, in my opinion at least.
Absolutely agreed.
the resell value is still a major reason why people choose to buy watches for retail, whether they are enthusiasts or not
@ and that's exactly where the problem lies.
It’s the biggest double edge sword in watchmaking right now. Sure the interest in your brand is high now but you don’t run a huge risk of alienating consumers and having them look elsewhere.
@@TeddyBaldassarre GS SBGH273, no brainer over Rolex.

I really like Rolex and until recently anyone could have owned one if they were willing to spend $5k for a used one (wished I would have). I also like Patek Philippe but never planned on owning one. With modern pricing and my current income a Tissot, Hamilton, or Bulova are looking like my next watch. I own a couple of Swiss watches but it seems either a Seiko or Invicta (gasp) sub homage finds it way to my wrist. They maintain good accuracy and in the world of working class guys, they hold up and look good. Not everyone spends time looking at a watch with a loop inspecting brush strokes.
Invicta is the way to go…..Seiko is nice if you want to spend more than twice the price of an Invicta
Great watch with one glaring exception: If those double indexes at 3, 6, 9 went back to single sticks like the OP39 (black or white, not the other varieties) then I'd be lined up to get one. As is, I much prefer the previous generation white or black OP39.
Same problem I had with the new OP. In the end I went for the DJ41 with the smooth bezel & oyster bracelet, or as I like to call it the "OP date".
Doesn't matter if you line up to get one or not. There isn't any in the store 😅

Totally agree, but making indices out of white gold is a great move. Unlikely to tarnish or have patina in decades to come.
Gifts to an AD, is the most ridiculous thing ever. They are already earning a commission on the sale. Go figure.....
Which Oris and which Omega do you own?
"Gifts to AD" that sounds like bribes, which are corruption. That is nasty corrupt business practice.
Well said. I am celebrating a significant milestone in my life as well and was set to purchase an OP. After the recent turn of events I purchased an Oris and a beat up old Fiat Spider instead. I won't participate in silly Brand games.
Have a look at the Cartier Santos just over 7 and looks fantastic.
Pretentious
Understated but packs a punch. What a superb watch from Rolex!
I was watching the watch market for a long period and I decided to get myself a Tissot Gentleman 18k gold I am very happy with it because in my opinion it’s a very beautiful watch
The market value is well over 10k us, entry level ?
I've had a bunch of Rolex watches, and previously had a OP39 in black, and it was easily one of my favorite! I now have a sub, but really would love to pick up an OP41 to my collection.
I purchased the Blue OP39 in 2018, at the time it didn’t appear very popular but I thought it the perfect size. I was shocked to see the price has jumped on the used market just because it’s discontinued.
Bought the same in 2017. Great watch but just as shocked as you with the way the price has shot up.
im considering a few options here. i have a place to get a new OP36 from my local AD at retail. but for less money i can get an older nicer fluted bezel 36 DJ two tone with a diamond dial. in addition to that i can have a full set cartier tank for about the same price. what are your thoughts because spending 6k on a watch is a big enough deal for me
If you can get 1 OP for everyday use, including with suit, would it be a black or blue dial?

Totally agree. I’d throw the BB36 in there as an underrated option. For $3k or less you are getting most of what the OP gives you.
The simple luxury of a Porsche or Rolex, lol! 🤣 Gimme a Ford or Seiko, job done.
You know Putin has a Grand Seiko, right?

Tudor Black Bay 36 imho is the best (alternative)entry luxury watch.
Stylish, elegant simplicity with a great movement and sheer quality. On the waiting list for the 41mm version. Here's hoping....

Teddy - as a sales professional I congratulate you on a very clever ‘reverse sell’ from a Rolex that nobody can buy (even those who can afford to) down to a Tissot that most people could afford
I own a Tissot Gentleman identical to the one shown in this video and can happily endorse just how fantastic the watch really is - it out performs many $2k watches never mind $1k dollar watches - in terms of movement, fit and finish it has a Tag Heuer Carrera beat (also a great looking watch) - and when you consider the price / heritage the Tissot is just a no brainer
If someone is looking for a taste of the Oyster Perpetual the Tissot is a total no brainer - just buy one already
If you must spend over $5k on a watch avoid Rolex and buy a Grand Seiko - better made, better movements, better finished and no stigma
If only Tissot would release the Gentleman or PRX in a variety of sizes like the OP I'd be all over it. Tissot is beautiful and reasonably priced.
And no resale value which so many youngsters care so much about.
I buy a watch for life so resale doesn’t mean much to me.
I freaking love the OP! It is my most worn watch! ❤️👏🏻

Hypothetically yes. However, you can't find that watch new for the retail pricing. Instead the amount you would pay for it, could allow you to buy much better watch from Omega, etc.

Fully agreed. i have the 41mm OP (bright blue), and the GS Snowflake. The OP is a great watch with class, but the Snowflake is in another league! And for the same price? Even more impressive.
I just found your channel. Great information. I’m really enjoying it.

I bought my Submariner in 2006 for $4k out the door. That was plenty and it wasn't any better quality than my dad's Tag Heuer Classic 2000. In fact his Tag's clasp didn't rattle constantly like my Sub did and does. I've switched to Breitling.
Those old oyster bracelets were jangly, but charming. The new ones are rock solid and might be the best in in the business.
New to your channel, first vid. Very informative, much appreciated. My only nice watch is a Bulova & I goes great with any night out. Looking to upgrade, I think I’ll go with the Tissot then eventually move into the Rolex.
Thanks again, new subscriber here!!!
I have tried one on for 1/2 day and was very happy with the balance, looks, and weight.
Try getting a Rolex at retail. It's a bad joke.
Love the Tissot gentleman!!!! The Oyster is a great watch, but I would rather get an omega for the same money.....
with all due respect, why just not buy tudor black bay 41mm? same blue dail same bazel, no date at both, but the tudor is half price with jubilee bracelet. thanks.
Great valuable work Teddy Baldassarre! Thank you for your efforts. Stay healthy and greetings to all of the spectators.
Thank you, Hans. Happy holidays!
Absolutely love your content, nearly as much as I love the OP. Would you pick this over the Omega Aqua Terra?
I find this 41mm way too big, I have the same model in 36mm and is absolutely clean and proportional, I love it.
36 will never be out of fashion, 41 will and pretty soon. 36 is classic, dressy and it just looks better built.
@@Alan-cl2ix Perhaps if you are a 5'8" girly man a 36mm would be the way to go. Over 6' men need 41mm - 43mm to go with their bigger/stronger/more domineering stature.
I thought I wanted a date just with a blue dial but I actually prefer this. Moving to the top of my list...
Is it worth getting any rolex, in terms of long term value would all of them really go up or is it only ones such as the submariner?
My OP39 white will never leave my collection, if I had to go down to one that would be it. Just perfect in any situation
that's the perfect watch, so unique and the size is perfect.
Thanks for the video. Wish you have commented on the no date feature of it. Without a date, do you think it has good resale value?
Bought this after watching this video like 5 times. Love your content sir. Thanks 🙏🏻
What dial, what size and what price?
Agree with you 100%. Retail price point at the higher side of reason. I want a blue, a diamond slate and a diamond MOP. A silver would be nice too. Op my favorite next to the GMT II.
I'm so in love with you content though. Been really an inspiration ✨
What about price depreciation? Or does it increase in value?
Great video. I've got the blue face model on order. Should ave it early 2022...... well if I ever see it!!
On order. Lol lol lol 😂😂
When it comes to fine imitation watches, amzwatch delivers. I've bought from them several times, and I've never been let down.
Blue looks cheap
I just got mine.. silver dial.. at retail price from AD
it’s beautiful. Just also realised it’s not really 41mm.. it’s actually 39.5mm
Love this model and the double markers at 3,6,9. Unfortunate about the hype and availability
What would be your top dollar you would pay on any color OP?
Hey Teddy I've wanted to grow out of my comfort zone and get a square/rectangular face watch, could you maybe do a video of how to choose a watch of that style?
Thanks for the info, just ordered a purple face 39, can’t wait 😩
Dear Teddy, thank you for another excellent review! I have bought my OP34 blue explorer face in August 2020, so just before the new OPs were released. Do you think I should swap it for the new OP36? I wouldn't take the new OP34 due to the caliber.
I think you should keep and enjoy your watch ❤️
