As soon as you released this, the game updated, Mason added a "perish" option to the gestures in combat that takes you straight to the after-life, and added auto-saves. I finished playing it this morning, before the update, not sure if anything else is changed.
Ignacio Olguín Have you ever wanted to die? Ever want to escape from the terrors of life? With this new update to Hylics 2, you can now do exactly that!
I've always viewed Pongorma's face as a knight's helmet since he's supposed to be one of the Dread Knights of Yiithorn! As a result, I used to think the art of the showed otherwise was weird (meaning art that had his head being shown as his actual face and not a helmet). However I think that shows that the characters are so abstract that you can interpret how they look in many different ways. That's really cool to be honest!
I get super confused on how to draw his Hylics 1 design because of this. Sometimes I make it a helmet and sometimes I interpret it as his face. That's what I love about his design too tho!
I like to think that he just got a new helmet to look a bit more menacing; after all, his title is _dread_ knight. It’s like Meta Knight: scary guy with a ridiculous little face underneath a mask/helmet.
It's like someone took Shovel Knight's helmet, mixed it with Shredder's helmet, then Beetle Kirby's helmet, then an Inkling's ears, then shaped it into the shape of a dolphin for some reason
It's great to see more and more indie games stand out from the crowd in terms of visuals, it establishes an identity for them, compared to other modern games that, do feel a bit samey in some regards. And I can appreciate any game that goes to great lengths in animating sprites.
The step from Hylics to Hylics 2 is really amazing. 2 is basically everything that 1 wanted to be, because, as cool as it looked, it really was just a funky looking RPG-maker game in the end. Now the cool graphics got a gameplay that actually feels fitting to it. For your analysis of the characters' goals it might be interesting to know that in gnosticism a "hylic" is a person completely bound to the physical world and material concerns.
Hmm, I guess that makes Wayne and Co. Hylics themselves. Somsnosa has a ranch she's working on, Dedusmuln is an archeologist, etc. Gibby, on the other hand, might be a Psychic, as you said, as he wants to completely wreck the material plane for absolute freedom. I'm absolutely surprised at how I'm able to remember Wayne's friends' werid-ass names out of my head.

So glad he talked about the final boss theme, it truly is what made it feel so final and epic and just... straight up intimidating! I think gibby is way scarier in this game than the first, and it's not just because of his size, but just how he walks towards you so menacingly, and has a body made up of parts that were enhanced with the "terrestrial juice" he was bathing in, but the fact that they weren't pieced together made me feel like his body wasn't finished forming yet but that he was confident that it didn't need to be in order for him to take you down. Alright...cool...now if you could distribute those periods before "so I really like this game" evenly throughout your sentence I might understand it a bit better.
The feel of Hylics and Hylics 2 makes me think about Kenshi. They both have a strange theme going on but that theme makes sense because the characters act like everything weird going on is just normal to them.
Fun fact: there's a character in the first game who seems to tell you some deep wistful poem as his final words before deteriorating into one of the random-generated-text NPCs. *(spoilers)* I came up with a little meme theory that it might be a biological condition only some NPCs had. In reality I figured it was just another piece of Hylics weirdness. To say I was blown away when the Hylemxylem rose and my theory was proven correct would be a massive understatement. I was nearly freaking out in my chair. Turns out he was foreshadowing it all along. I agree wholeheartedly about the platforming (still had trouble with the little indicator though), but I actually felt the fights were too easy where you thought they were too hard. I came up with a pretty iron-clad strategy using the status-projecting move while holding the cursed gloves, allowing a charged multi-attack or lightning to do massive damage and taking care of everyone pretty handily. And I wasn't even strategizing that hard, there was a guide that outlined how to minmax Somsnosa to nearly ohko final Gibby with a single attack and I was nowhere near that level of perfectionism. Just saying player experiences are probably gonna vary in that area.
I really like hearing James so passionate. I saw this on steam and thought "isn't this the one game he really liked?" After seeing this review I definitely wanna check it out.
16:17 I bring to your attention Nelnal and his universe, Soul Monitor (if it isn't in your radar already). Lots of cool designs and some TV-headed dudes
You know what's weird? Whenever I play one of these games, all my thoughts appear in Mason Lindroth's art style! Even when I think of something that isn't in his art style it still appears with the same filter that the Hylics games appear in!
Man I love your content, ever since I learned about Lisa the painful through your channel I’ve discovered so many more badass games. It’s really cool, keep it up man
I love how exited you were during the review! I actually finished it today, and oh boy what a cool game it was! Definitely one of the best games of 2020, period!
Well, the complaint about not being able to run from battles is obsolete as of today. They literally just patched it in to add the ability to instantly go to the after life mid battle.
I just had the greatest idea ever. Mason Lindroth... with earthbound. Imagine a mother 3 remake or a new mother game with clay visuals, that would be INSANE.
If i had to guess , the actual theme of hylics is Mind ( wayne ) vs Heart ( Gibby ) . Proof ? " work the mind , never comprehend the heart " The mind organizes thoughts ( thats why Wayne's form is comprehensible ) while Gibby's creations are odd and defy reason and common sense , much like feelings .
15:45 you could also use the cups you've collected to drink some water from the water jug to increase your mana? idk what it's called and I only learned about it near the end of the game also beat the end boss with 3 characters...bc I couldn't solve the sand castle puzzle....
The Hylics lore speculation you give reminds me of how I would treat my clay figures as a kid, they would often have strong weapons to compensate for their fragility, would give them powers made out of clay, and unlike most toys, they would permanently die, sometimes be reshapen to be something else, their bodies would take on normal objects to be more intimidating, never thought about the world of Hylics in a particular way that would connect with my experience of playing with clay as a kid
This really looks like a big improvement over the first one :o. In another point, when you talked about the whole buffs and debuffs importance, the difficulty of the battles and stuff...it reminded me for some reason to the whole shin megami tensei franchise(maybe because im playing nocturne rn?)
You might also like Stephen Thecatamites' games, such as Goblet Grotto, 10 Beautiful Postcards, and Magic Wand, if you're looking for wild art styles, lots of color, great music, and a quirky sense of humor. I'd really love to see your thoughts on Magic Wand. His games are more focused on exploration and collection of items. For me, Lindroth and Thecatamites are in the same high tier when it comes to crazy, charming game experiences.
These visuals are outstanding. The way the title screen is all stop motion it's brilliant and such a unique look. I'm surprised this didn't blow up like a lot of the other peculiar games with an unusual art style.
Hylics is a bizarre series, in a good way. The characters, the music, visuals, and the stop-motion are amazing. I wish I could do stop-motion just like the artist.
The game is focused on Debuffs and Buffs Charge moves are important in dealing damage... The regular battles take ages and are a pain of an ass Oh my god Hylics became an SMT game
The thing about the game. I was supprised how many things Mason managed to put in his game. Like, you have walking in isometric perspective in the overworld, you play sidescroller shoot'em up in Xeno Arcadia, you have The Legend of Grimmrock expiriance in Sage's Labirinth and the RPG maker fight system. Like, there is so many different kinds of gameplay.
Thinks about this video. Thinks about this video a lot. I love it so much. Hearing “Ma I Fly Now” start the commentary off just tugs at my heart strings.
As someone who really wants to create video games in the future, I've watched some of your videos and they're very fun lol. I love that you're so passionate about what you talk about and how excited you get makes me happy too. Hylics and it's sequel is so amazing and I really love the style aswell, holy shit it's so unique
“I don’t know if you have played these games are not be sure to check out Middens, Gingiva and Where They Cremate The Road Kill, very cool games as well 😎.” Hylics 2 is amazing, I have to give you that 😀😁.”
Nah it's perfect with this early Syd Barrett era Pink Floyd trippy psychedelic rock. Fits the whole theme of it much better. Tool is great but yeah that early creatively fertile Pink Floyd before they started doing progressive rock instead, it's still the trippiest music there is, and it's clear the guy got inspiration from their first album while making the music for this
I recently found out about this game and I agree, this game is amazing! There's so much effort being put into making and animating all those clay figures, sculpting the locations, and animating the Gestures. The music is also fantastic. I haven't been able to stop listening to the music or looking at this game for the past few days. I hope there will be more bizarre and unique RPGs like this in the future.
What content are you talking about? Apart from a lot of it being redesign to various extents more or less everything from the trailers is in the final game except the top-down shooter parts from the first preview.
@@Painocus Enemies you have to actually fight on the overworld using the sort of raygun you have on the 2D platforming section, a whole urban area where you were supposed to find and fight the Motor Hunter, and, most importantly, dancing animations.

I mean it was kinda happening in the first game Wayne’s cat looking very similar to him and all and well one of clones split off even further to become a sort of wise leader to the Wayne’s and Wayne himself he is leader after all and I guess he needs himself to leader him or something honestly I’m not sure I was just making some messy story out of nonsense but since that’s the whole point of the game it lines up well
Alright...cool...now if you could distribute those periods before "so I really like this game" evenly throughout your sentence I might understand it a bit better.
i felt happy reading this for some reason
@@tedbobinski5537 sorry Weird game weird description for some reason
@@Ribbons0121R121 Yay
Or maybe, you know...
A gibbous moon?
The feel of Hylics and Hylics 2 makes me think about Kenshi.
They both have a strange theme going on but that theme makes sense because the characters act like everything weird going on is just normal to them.
''Deploying cookies.'' That sounds like a cookie jar would be a cluster bomb.
Cluster heal
Cookie jar would be a cool item in this game
Finally here, so glad I was able to be part of the amazing Hylics community as the beta tests came out
As an amateur clay artist, this game gave me a lot of inspiration. Clay is limitless.
Me and the Nitrorad Community when we see James make a review of the Hylics sequel: : )
I’m speed.
Me and the hylics community when we see that James made a review of it: :D
Me: casually waits until he makes a video about the neverhood
Holy shit yes.
Oh my god yes
Please yes
Yes. He must do that. And Skullmonkeys. It is a platformer after all.
@@Mike14264 I imagine that to be the most likely due to the first ones bullshit. I just watched vinny play it.
Damn boi. Already seen that comin' when discovered the release
I respect the pfp
Fun fact: there's a character in the first game who seems to tell you some deep wistful poem as his final words before deteriorating into one of the random-generated-text NPCs.
*(spoilers)*
I came up with a little meme theory that it might be a biological condition only some NPCs had.
God I rewatched that intro about several times it’s the zoom out on the clay tv that really gives me goosebumps
That intro... Dude, I love your videos, thank you!
I like how the world is made out of hands. Fingers turned into rocks, etc
I saw the trailer for the game finally like maybe a couple weeks ago, so seeing ya review it here Nitro is a blessing. Super happy to see this!
15:11 Perhaps the real Wayne was the friends we made along the way!
I smiled so big when the title screen came up. These graphics blow me away.
I shall now actilely replace "use" with deploy in my vocabulary.
13:28
Rad: But this Weird Looking Dude Here
Me: I see a lot of weird looking dudes here :) :)
If i had to guess , the actual theme of hylics is Mind ( wayne ) vs Heart ( Gibby ) .
Proof ? " work the mind , never comprehend the heart "
The mind organizes thoughts ( thats why Wayne's form is comprehensible ) while Gibby's creations are odd and defy reason and common sense , much like feelings .
Happy to see Hylics 2 exist , I was genuinly exited to see this on my suggestions
Xeno Arcadia is one of my all time favorite videogame OSTs that song just hits different
15:45 you could also use the cups you've collected to drink some water from the water jug to increase your mana? idk what it's called and I only learned about it near the end of the game
also beat the end boss with 3 characters...bc I couldn't solve the sand castle puzzle....
Man that custom intro was amazing
HOLY SHIT! ISOMETRIC VIEW IS AN ISSUE?? Add a lil' shadow circle underneath the lil' main dude and PORT IT TO VR
For me, Lindroth and Thecatamites are in the same high tier when it comes to crazy, charming game experiences.
this game looks so amazing, 18 bucks for this game its such a steal
Yeah, stealing your money.
God the music sounds like an insane acid trip in all the most amazing of ways
The game is focused on Debuffs and Buffs
Charge moves are important in dealing damage...
The regular battles take ages and are a pain of an ass
Oh my god Hylics became an SMT game
This game kept inspiring me to make some fan art the whole time, I think I'm finally convinced to start actually making some.
the amount of detail to things concerns me as an artist.... like seriously there is something wrong with the creator to make such things.
i love it
The thing about the game.
I look at this and I see a western Digital Devil Saga.
It really does look like this game is a step up in every aspect from the first one. Exactly what you want in a sequel.
some of the enemy animations remind me of Cyriak, a surreal animator on youtube.
Thinks about this video. Thinks about this video a lot. I love it so much. Hearing “Ma I Fly Now” start the commentary off just tugs at my heart strings.
Sounds like this game has the Mt. Itoi curse when it comes to the final area.
As someone who really wants to create video games in the future, I've watched some of your videos and they're very fun lol. I love that you're so passionate about what you talk about and how excited you get makes me happy too. Hylics and it's sequel is so amazing and I really love the style aswell, holy shit it's so unique
After a few weeks of beating the game, I was wondering when you'd review this...
Ok. Now we really need Hylics figures.
20:20 So basically Bill Cypher
“I don’t know if you have played these games are not be sure to check out Middens, Gingiva and Where They Cremate The Road Kill, very cool games as well 😎.” Hylics 2 is amazing, I have to give you that 😀😁.”
I feel like Tool's music would fit well with this game
Nah it's perfect with this early Syd Barrett era Pink Floyd trippy psychedelic rock. Fits the whole theme of it much better. Tool is great but yeah that early creatively fertile Pink Floyd before they started doing progressive rock instead, it's still the trippiest music there is, and it's clear the guy got inspiration from their first album while making the music for this
I can't get over the fact that the main character is a fucking crescent moon named Wayne. Excellent.
18:02 It is so weird to hear james say fucking instead of freaking
He says "freaking" though (Or so I hear)
You’re deaf if you heard him say fucking. Clean your ears out
@@dykishandfriends they meant 18:12 lol
Glad to know I'm not the only one who's had a thing for Hylics fanart lately. It's fun to see other artists' interpretations of the character designs~
I Hope that he will Talk about Bug Fables Someday.
I still hope that he plays Bug fables someday.
I recently found out about this game and I agree, this game is amazing! There's so much effort being put into making and animating all those clay figures, sculpting the locations, and animating the Gestures. The music is also fantastic. I haven't been able to stop listening to the music or looking at this game for the past few days. I hope there will be more bizarre and unique RPGs like this in the future.
hylics 2 was amazing but im sad as there was alot of content that was unused, most of it you can see in the trailers
Passionate love you have for this game really makes me wanna pick it up the game & you were absolutely right about the music, it’s a banger. Lemme tell you buddy, the new outro background looks leagues better than before. You’re really making a ton of improvements since I first saw ya & I can’t wait to see what you come up with next.
