If I made a horror game, I'd probably make a jump scare like this. You run and then the monster gets to you, a crazily drawn picture is there and then: *"OOGA BOOGA!"*
The" gardening woman" is Ninomiya Sontoku,a famous historical figure, there are always statues of him in front of schools so that was probably his animated statue
So James just assumed somebody's gender based on a statue! I guess LoverFella wasn't the first one to assume genders based on a structure built. For reference, when exploring the Dream SMP map, he thought the statue which was supposed to be of famous Twitter eGirl Pokimane was of "a boy with, like, a flower or something", as he might've put it.
I'm sorry for commenting on a 3 year old comment, but this comment made me realize, yes, that was something folkloric, and no, it wasn't specifically put into the game because I'm afraid of old people. That was. That was an awakening
While I haven't finished the first Yomawari game, there's one thing about it I wanted to touch on. Or rather, about the game's advertising. During the game's development, and leading up to its release, the story was always stated as "Your dog runs away during a walk just before sundown. Your sister goes to look for it, but doesn't return by night time. It's up to you to go and find them both." This connects back to the part in the tutorial you showed where the dog is hit by the truck. If you had followed the news for the game leading up to the game's release, upon playing it, not only did the tutorial lull you into a sense of comfort, but the expectations of what the story would be did so as well. I was just left sitting in bed with my Vita, wondering what the HELL has just happened. They had the restraint to hold back on what REALLY happened during the tutorial, all so the impact of what does actually happen would have an even greater effect, and that's something I REALLY liked about it.
This is absolutely spot on. What's also interesting is the games teaser trailer which released in JPN about a year before release. It was a first person trailer of a Japanese girl running through a forest and turning on the flash light saying "Sis, is that you?". Made me think we were getting a first person horror on the Vita and was the first game that really made me want to buy one and even though the game wasn't that I can't say I regret that for a second.
You telling me there's advertisements out there that realize an early twist in a game can be just as impactful as a late one? Now I've heard everything.
I'm certain others have pointed this out by now, but that gardening lady is actually an animated statue of Ninomiya Sontoku. You usually find statues of him in front of schools in Japan. A common school legend you hear are of these statues coming to life and just walking around the school after hours.
@@lukeskywalker987 reminds of that one scene from a nick cage movie (I THINK the wicker man? I can't remember very well) where someone hallucinates a girl just getting plowed by a train out of nowhere. So sudden, and because of that it's kinda funny.

One of my friends owns a copy of Midnight Shadows on the PS4 and at some point, we all started hanging out in her house and taking turns exploring and fighting the bosses. I remember that this all started because at some point my friend asked us to help her beat one of the boss battles (ie, the boss battle with the Scissorman hand ghost and the artifacts) and then we just kept helping her with the rest of the game ever since. I was actually the one who defeated asshole pillar boss and started up on the giant black spaghetti monster boss before rage-quitting because of how frustrating it was. XD I also remember my friend not being okay at the end with the whole tutorial and Haru thing and having to explain it to us because we hadn't seen the beginning of the game. And holy shit, that final hand spider boss was terrifying in my opinion, and I thought the game mechanic for defeating that boss was really cool and tied in really well to the whole tutorial thing that happened just before with Haru. I also remember that we had slightly spoiled ourselves in regards to the fact that Haru wasn't going to walk away completely unscathed, so when we picked up the red scissor item and read the description, we just started screaming in realization. I think the jumpscare was the games way of saying "hey stay away from this monstrosity it can and will murder you if it is able to so avoid it like the plague." A way of telling you that they are dangerous without having to spell it out for you. Rather clever when you think about it.
Sold me on the game. You're genuinely one of the best spoken reviewers on this website. The way you articulate and pace your speech brings out your point in an amazingly effective way. You intertwine your personal experiences with more "objective" points very naturally and it allows the videos to have both analytical and emotional content, which are equally important to me in discussion around a game. Keep it up.
This is a really sweet post. I've got to say I agree. Having played both Yomawari titles, I find it an absolute shame that more people don't know about these games. All the aspects of what makes a truly great horror game are here. It doesn't have the abstract story telling of a game like Yume Nikki but I'd argue the lore behind this game is best thing about it bar none and every time I explored the town it made me wonder what happened here.
@@gamemaniac2013 I think he either said that or had some disk in a picture some time ago on his Twitter, I believe he wanted to get entire series first, although now I'm not really sure if it was about Klonoa series (try searching Klonoa from:NitroRad on Twitter, there might be something)
Those are games I would like to cover eventually. But I only have a copy of the Wii remake. I'm waiting on finding copies of the original and the sequel for decent prices.
I'll always remember the moment the credits rolled after this "hell" of a last boss fight in the second game and the song made me tear up a little just because the ending was just too emotional. Still get shivers down my spine when I listen to this track... Both were amazing games and I'll probably even come back to them (maybe with a completionist approach) when the story isn't so prominent in my mind anymore. Great review on your part as well! Really enjoy your videos, especially the horror ones. ^^
Honestly, thanks for covering this. Horror is my favorite genre, and there’s nothing I like more than finding out I’ve been sleeping on a gem in the PS4 or Switch library.
In Yomawari: Night Alone, the Monster Cat randomly spawns at Vacant Lot with the radio. You have a chance to trigger its event by returning home and leaving it. If its event is active, when you go to the Vacant Lot, you will find it in the form of a regular cat and it will be waiting for you at the steps to the lot. However, once you get close to it, it will run away from you for a moment, and when you enter the lot it will transform into a large cat head. It will then chase after you and kill you.
Like.. thank you so much for those sound effects over the jumpscares. I've seen so many videos where they talk about how much they hate jumpscares and then they play one of those [insert favourite curse word here] FNAF clips and I end up with a racing heart and anxiety feels anyway.
Thanks a lot for the recommendation. This seems like a game I would enjoy but it would've flown under my radar without the video. It's a bit expensive, but luckily steam christmas sale is here soon.
If you enjoyed this game, you might enjoy Mad Rat Dead- It's a game released last year by the same director as this game, actually! It probably isn't necessarily your kind of thing, being a rhythm-platformer. The story is quite good, though! Not perfect, of course, but still pretty decent in my opinion. If there's anything you could say about it, it's that it's charming. Certainly a lot different from Yomawari, but it's still a fascinating and experimental game from NIS. Just a little recommendation! Anyway, I loved the video! Very well put together as always!
I have no clue why but the first game reminds me of this manga called Mieruko chan, it's about this girl who can see these really freaky apparitions and ghosts that are freaky to look at and she has to act like she can't see them as to not draw attention
I expected the dog to die almost immediately, but yes, the way it distracts you with a tutorial made it still catch me off guard. I wouldn't have expected it to happen *at that moment.*
Not really, but they make a lot of different anime type games, especially dungeon rpgs Well, not "make" but fund, like EA minus the cuntiness Basically, if you like the japanese culture or anime things you will like them
I loved this review! I picked up Yomawari Midnight Shadow and found it to be a great horror game, the story's cool, and the graphics actually worked great to create a good sense of atmosphere! Glad to see you give it some attention and put it in the spotlight for people to find out about this little gem. Keep up the great content!
Dude, ever since watching your review I've been on the fence of getting this collection. 5 years later I finally ended up getting it, and I seriously regret waiting so long. This game is quickly becoming one of my favorite games ever! So good! The sound design really does it for me and the town is amazingly well done. It kind of reminds me of Yokai Watch, the design of the town and whatnot.
Nitrorad's videos are addicting, I just watched this review and I'm already waiting for a new one. He calmly and critically reviews these games and he notices the subtle details in them. Which probably comes from his experience in filmschool.
Love your horror reviews, Nitro. Have you ever thought of doing the Project Zero/Fatal Frame series? No one really seems to talk about them but they scared the hell out of me when I was a kid.
I suspect if Nitro does that it'll likely be one of his Halloween reviews since he likes doing series together. You're right though FF is a cult classic series.
great video as always! i love learning about horror games and you always seem to find interesting ones to talk about. ps anyone else think nitrorad looks like the kind of person that gives good hugs? maybe thats just me
@@AlmaHeartfire To be fair there is an option that lets you use the analog sticks instead of the touch screen which is both welcome and mandatory but the game is all about dying again and again.
Before i knew it this became my favourite gaming channel. You really made a lot of good points about horror in general here, not to mention that Rule of Rose music, really makes me feel at home here.
As someone who is both a huge fan (since day 1) of Yume Nikki, and of Fromsoftware games, and horror games in general. Yomawari is actually literally perfect Though there are flaws for sure, the combination of gorgeous isometric spritework, Nikki-style nighttime surreal exploration with Dark Souls style checkpointing, and even the yokai/yurei having a cute but still spooky aesthetic, with the best sound design ever, its a niche product for niche people, for sure but for that niche there is literally nothing else like it!
Hi Nitro! At 11:26, that is not a gardening woman, it's actually a famous Japanese statues that are placed in many elementary school, forgot what it's name was but it's a statue of a Japanese child who was studying while he is working signifying the importance of learning education. Yeah... about that... weirdly after you posted your comment NIS was like... oh yeah we're making a 3rd one.
@@Akechi_The_Phantom_Detective I'll certainly pick it up on the Switch the next chance I get!
Day two of politely asking Nitrorad to do videos on the entirety of the Klonoa games
I think he's planning to, I also think he has a PO box, check his twitter
@@tryangel0step Oh, nice. I'd still prefer to hear it from the man himself, but this is good news. Where'd you find out?
@@gamemaniac2013 I think he either said that or had some disk in a picture some time ago on his Twitter, I believe he wanted to get entire series first, although now I'm not really sure if it was about Klonoa series (try searching Klonoa from:NitroRad on Twitter, there might be something)
Those are games I would like to cover eventually. But I only have a copy of the Wii remake. I'm waiting on finding copies of the original and the sequel for decent prices.
@@NitroRad Will you also do the 2 GBA spin offs?
Dream Champ Tournament holds a special place in my heart.
God bless your Banjo Kazooie jumpscare. I love and appreciate them.
-An anxious hater of Jumpscares
We have an ally!
Honestly, thanks for covering this.
Horror is my favorite genre, and there’s nothing I like more than finding out I’ve been sleeping on a gem in the PS4 or Switch library.
a nitrorad video without a yume nikki mention, is not a nitro rad video
I love the launch pad troll from Portal 2, that’s still an incredible moment. I love that game so much. I really should replay it.
Kenka Bancho and...shoot I dunno, there's some chick named Fatima and you play as one of three zombies in a medieval fantasy sorta deal. Worth a vita
Freaky game? I like Freaky Games. Freaky games make me freaky hyped.
Nice, that kind of ending for the second game is something really unique. Thanks for showing us these games.
own all the games from this dev on vita, some real masterpieces in there.
Like.. thank you so much for those sound effects over the jumpscares.
Darkwood is worth a look. It does horror very well. Its actually terrifying and i don't remember a single jumpscare.
God I'm stupid excited to see how you make of this series. The yomawari games are so interesting and unique. This is gonna be a fun watch.
I must be a sicko. My immediate reaction to the dog scene was to burst out laughing at the joke the developer just played on us.
It was funny and sad
Truck-Kun strikes again. Also, i did too. The visceral smack followed by Nitro's face was too much
I have no clue why but the first game reminds me of this manga called Mieruko chan, it's about this girl who can see these really freaky apparitions and ghosts that are freaky to look at and she has to act like she can't see them as to not draw attention
Welcome to Pyro's Rewind, buddy.
I expected the dog to die almost immediately, but yes, the way it distracts you with a tutorial made it still catch me off guard. I wouldn't have expected it to happen *at that moment.*
I love NIS America, almost everything that they‘re involved is worth to at least check it out
Not really, but they make a lot of different anime type games, especially dungeon rpgs
Well, not "make" but fund, like EA minus the cuntiness
Basically, if you like the japanese culture or anime things you will like them
@LAW Really? I never had any problem with their games
THE GODDAMN CENSORED SCREAMS THOOO
Highlight of this (already great) channel
Clicked on to see James' view on a horror game I want to buy
Stayed to see if doggy was okay.
That ending reminfs me of Breavely default.
"Have the courage to disobey."
wow, an unexpected quote, but a very welcome one, thank you!

TRUCK-KUNS AT IT AGAIN!!!!
the dog has been banished into the isekai
I'm Living In A Fantasy World With RPG Mechanics And Also I'm a Dog
Curse you Araki
Araki is Truck-kun?!?!
Thank you for using cartoon sound effects during the jumpscare bit, I don't have the heart for that kind of stuff.
Omg my wish comes true. Thanks NitroRad
great video as always! i love learning about horror games and you always seem to find interesting ones to talk about.
ps anyone else think nitrorad looks like the kind of person that gives good hugs? maybe thats just me
ive never closed the deltarune review this fast

I love the Rule of Rose music you've been putting into your recent reviews.
You should try hotaru no nikki and a rose in the twilight
though i have to warn you, hotaru no nikki is a very frustrating game
@@marcoterranova9844 that touch screan mechanics are brutal at that one part!
Rip Poro
He was a good boi
Im doing a joint playthrough with a friend and he laughed when it got hit and he felt really bad about it
As someone who is both a huge fan (since day 1) of Yume Nikki, and of Fromsoftware games, and horror games in general. Yomawari is actually literally perfect
Though there are flaws for sure, the combination of gorgeous isometric spritework, Nikki-style nighttime surreal exploration with Dark Souls style checkpointing, and even the yokai/yurei having a cute but still spooky aesthetic, with the best sound design ever, its a niche product for niche people, for sure but for that niche there is literally nothing else like it!
I love those chibi games and I wanna play them so bad
Hi Nitro!
I love your video since first time I come across the Siren review
and later I found out
you got a very nice taste of indie, old school classic and something doesn't easily mention by somebody outside of Asia
THAT keeping me coming back for more content (and sorry for the thing that I still don't have the ability to support Patrone right now)
Especially the horror genre from japan
I wonder if you got interesting in fatal frame/project zero series
With good mechanic, stories and challenge
and the plot. just got me easily as heck
Or the game detention(2017) form my country Taiwan,

Good plot with some historical value
It should be a nice experiences i think!
After all,
Thank you for always bringing quality video that make my day
And hope you have a nice day :)
Man thank god that some one use’s the bomber man hero ost In their vids
When i saw the dog scene i was like *ok i definitely need to play this game rn*
Not because i hate animals, but because of the way it catches you off guard
Rule of Rose has such a good soundtrack
Doesn't rule of Rose also only have like... one song on the entire soundtrack?
@@Akechi_The_Phantom_Detective no there is more, look up the OST
At 11:26, that is not a gardening woman, it's actually a famous Japanese statues that are placed in many elementary school, forgot what it's name was but it's a statue of a Japanese child who was studying while he is working signifying the importance of learning education. I actually forgot about this game despite watching some LPs of it when it was first released. However, as soon as I saw that THING in the thumbnail, that horrible face, the memories came flooding back.
The monsters in this game were horrifying. It's impressive that they could make pixelated monsters so creepy.
Hey Nitro rad, I recommend Bioshock the collection for a review. It seems like the kind of game you would like!
Oh wow! This looks really cool! Always love when you do videos on these lesser known horror games that I’ve never heard of.
I think you might like pathologic
Glad to see you back in quality form. You did your research, you made no biased statements and you didn't talk down at your audience. This is much better than your last review.

I can't do horror generally, and when bad shit happens to kids?
I just cannot handle that.
I used to be like that, then I played the first Yomawari and loved it. Currently playing through the second one, exited for the third.
Hey dude think you could talk about a game called Darkwood? Right up your alley honestly
Rewatching this again beaucse of the new one, I can't believe this video is already 3 years old!
You should one day try Lost in vivo , it's alot like Silent Hill
Yo yomawari lost in the dark has come out for the switch
