    Wow, I just bought at MK III and lucked out finding this old MK II video still around. There's nothing like it for the MK III, and really there isn't such a large difference between the 2 menu systems, you can play around a bit and find the settings covered here. But I couldn't find anything comparable to the usefullness/quality/subject matter of this video for the MK III. Great Job.

    Rob, Thanks for a great explanation of the settings! Having read the manual several times, I came away frequently confused about what each menu item does! In this short video tutorial, you covered every menu item with a demonstration of what effect they have on photos!

    Great video Rob. As an old Olympus user (e-510 and E-5) I know how was so hard to get a right info about settings those cameras. Andrzej Wrotniak helped us a lot and that’s was it. I`m glad that I subscribed to your channel because you do wonderful job and because I felt that Olympus cameras was always undervalued and needs more attention cause that cameras have a soul. Definitely. Few days ago, I both OMD E10 Mk II thanks to you and your channel. I want to have a small but capable camera always with me. Keep going, you are doing a great, great job for photography lovers and Olympus community.

    Wow! This video was so freaking informative! Kudos to you. It must feel good knowing that over a year later your video is helping out new users. I just got the EM10 mark 2 yesterday for a great price. The menu system us daunting compared to my old Canon T4i, it your video helped a TON. I definitely need to watch your video on mysets. Still confused between normal, anti-shock and silent. Antishock seems 100% superior to normal. Silent has no shake, but apparently you lose flash abilities? Excited to be able to snap shots at piano recital without the loud mirror sound of my SLR.

    Very late to this party, but wanted to comment that I found the menus on my first Olympus camera (an e-pl2), well, complex to say the least. Several cameras later, I've gotten used to the Olympus menus, but having only recently discovered your channel, decided to compare the settings on my two Olympus cameras, set after tediously going through each user manual, to your recommendations. We don't agree 100%, but very close I must say. Thanks for an extremely informative and helpful video.

    Good one, Rob. It shows that it is not how good is the gears but the creator that can 'see' and compose with creativity. The black n white is very interesting. Can you do more on composition? Thank you.

      @were2man 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RobTrek yes, Bob. I noticed you gave compositional explanations in your videos. Maybe you could give your thoughts on how you compose in various situations in one video or serial compilation. I personally feels composition is most critical to photography. If the photo looks bland or looks like others, it fails to deliver the message.

    This is a great explanation. I've done all my photos in auto to date. I'm worried I'm going to have trouble having done the myset. At times I found it hard to keep up with which button you pressed and went back several times to follow it. I also need to look up how to get the EVF to come on fast. Interesting. I have em1 mk ll step up for modes c1 birds and wildlife c2 General shooting /street c3 bracketing that's sent silent shutter
    on c1 I have it CAF +TR loose +2 9 point focus. The CAF is set to the lowest setting as I find it tracks better. C2 is much like your street settings.
    c3 5 shot bracket for landscapes and low light mostly as I shoot b&w in abandoned buildings a lot. I have a buttons programmed for digital zoom as well. I find by using peaking I can get tighter more accurate focus vs magnify and peaking.

    • @RobTrek
      @RobTrek  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'll have to try your tracking settings. I generally prefer magnify over peaking, especially on low contrast lenses, and use peaking more for wide and action shots.

    I am so grateful for the tutorials you have so thoroughly prepared for us-especially new photographers who want to fully explore this great camera. I love learning new settings and ways to navigate. I am hopeful you can answer a question regarding the HDMI output.You may have covered this in a previous tutorial and if you have please let me know which one I will seek it out. I am hopeful that this camera has a feature to give me clean HDMI
    output so there will be no info on the the display screen. I am using Ecamm as my software and a video capture card but I cannot turn off the display info. Bottom line question -Is there a setting to get a clean HDMI output ? Thank you for the time you have devoted to teaching. Thank you.

    Man I love your vids ..you are so well doing in explaining the Oly's.....never been seen that before.....I'm planning to buy the Pen -f beside my Em-10II and Em-1...but does the Pen-f add something more to what I allready have ? Or should I just stay with these 2 already nice cameras?....keep up the good works !

    • @RobTrek
      @RobTrek  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I bought the Pen-F purely for it's looks. However, it has a ton of features that are great for creative photographers that don't mind shooting in jpg and getting the look they want in-camera. For example - advanced color controls, more monochrome and art profiles, dedicated switch and dial. Some prefer the look of the monochrome output on the Pen-F over other cameras. I do mostly raw shooting, so many of those features get no time from me. Fortunately, the Pen-F does not hold back for raw shooters. Besides the jpg profiles, it adds EXIF lens data capability, fully articulating screen and more advanced auto-iso settings over the em10. I don't feel the base image quality is a significant upgrade, nor the autofocus capability over the em10ii. For video, the stabilization is better than the em10ii. If you want the pen-f for creative jpg and/or it's physical looks, it's a really nice camera, otherwise I'd stick with the em10ii. The em10ii is my workhorse camera, the Pen-F is my inspiration camera. Thanks for your feedback and question!

I turned if off because I also don't want the view finder to switch back and force, but when it is off, is there a way to switch to the view finder instead of the screen display when I need to?

    • @RobTrek

      Yes. There is a button on the right side of the viewfinder right behind the mode dial. This will toggle between the viewfinder and screen.

    Hi Rob , I am really enjoying your videos. They are clear , concise and spoken in at a level I understand. I do feel foolish however because I have been watching the videos on the OM -D E mark10 II and I have the OM-D E MARK 5 II. The settings have primarily the same so am I missing out on any information I might need ? Thank you for excellent videos. Thanks Donna

    • @RobTrek
      @RobTrek  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      For the things I'm covering, you're not missing out. There are some features the em5-ii has that are not on the em10-ii. I believe focus stacking and high res shot are two. There may be others, but I don't have an em5-ii so can't think of any others off the top of my head. There are many objective differences such as weather sealing, articulating screen, mic jack, and larger view finder to name a few.

    Hi Rob. Nice video. Followed along on my EM-1 Mk1. I think you left off a couple screens in the Gears-D menu as the video skipped right to Gears-E after you discussed Histogram Settings, around 29:50.

      @RobTrek  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks. You are correct, I got a bit disorientated and jumped out of the D menu by mistake. I was wondering why the mode guide was still set to "on" at the end of the video when I had to turn it off. I don't really change anything else after that besides the "Mode Guide", except maybe the Peaking color. Thanks for your feedback and watching so closely!

    Rob, I have a question that I hope you can help me with - I'm pretty sure it's not covered in your vids and I haven't found it anywhere on the Internet or in the E-M10 manual. In the SCP what are the Auto WB +/- A/G settings for and, while adjusting them, what does the "WB Preview" button accomplish? Thanks much!

    • @RobTrek
      @RobTrek  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It is to adjust the white balance. A stands for "Amber to Blue" or color temperature, G stands for "Green to Magenta" or tint. So if you're in any white balance mode (Auto, Sunny, Cloudy, etc... except for CWB where you set the temp by Kelvin) and you adjust the A to +7, then the overall colors will be more Amber (or warmer). A set to -7 will be more blue (or cooler).

    For those with the newer E-M10 Mk.3, it's worth buying David Thorpe's book "The Olympus E-M10 MkIII Menu System Simplified". Do NOT buy the Kindle e-book version, as it isn't well formatted. Go for the paperback! The book goes into total detail of every single menu setting available on the new E-M10 MkIII. Each setting is simply explained in plain English, as well as the pro's and con's of its use. A great book to compliment Rob's invaluable video tutorials.

    Hi Rob, Another awesome video, thank you! As I was replicating your settings today, I noticed something. This may have changed over time, or may have been covered in another comment, but to get the Anti Shock Shutter Mode option in Shooting Menu 1 at 7:14 in the current firmware version of the mark ii, Anti Shock in Shooting Menu 2 needs to be turned on. I also noticed that you have a heart icon in the Shutter Mode options in Shooting Menu 1. The heart represents either Noise Reduction or Silent Mode (checked and it is Silent Mode) which also would need to be turned on in Shooting Menu 2 to be available in the Shutter Mode options in Shooting Menu 1 at 7:14. I set both to 0sec in Menu 2, but could you comment on what you typically have them set at? This also makes these options available in the Super Control Menu. Thanks again! I'm using your posts as my main source of inspiration and information to learn as much as I can about my new OM-D E-M10 mark ii. :)

    • @RobTrek
      @RobTrek  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks. You are correct, they need to be turned on in Shooting Menu 2. They are "on" and set to zero by default and I always leave them at 0 unless doing something very specific, but the custom shutter or timer does the same thing effectively.

    01:35 Picture styles for raw: Set to neutral as suggested, AND then set contrast to lowest, and saturation and sharpening one notch down. The reason for this is the camera uses JPEG histogram to makes exposure decisions hence this helps capture the optimal quality raw files. Even if you use jpeg, all of these are much easier to introduce during even basic processing, but once baked in the jpeg they become much harder to undo.

    • @RobTrek
      @RobTrek  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, a good tip to bring the jpg histogram to raw. Thanks.

I'm more of a deep dive, explain it all at no expense kind a channel, sprinkled in with some vlogs and products. I use my Nikon D lenses time to time with an adapter. Make sure you get the "G" adapter just in case you want to use a "G" lens. It has the aperture ring built in. I have a couple of videos on adapting lenses to the EM10-ii and PenF.
