steve, one of the things that i have noticed is that pretty much no matter where you go, you ALWAYS seem to focus on and find positive things to say about the places you visit, even if they are only a brief layover between flights, trains or ferries, such as this one. it is such a treat to always come away from watching your videos with a positive feeling about the world and all the wonderful places that one can find along the way if we only take the time to look. thanks again for another wonderful experience.

I have just recently found your channel and binge watched your videos since then - You just have such a lovely spirit, so much kindness in your delivery and you explore places in a very honest and true way.
I love that you show them as they are, in rain, in sun, in their mundaneness but also with excitement for random bus shelters, public transit, walking and finding the small details.

Thanks Steve. This brought back so many memories. My husband walked down to Poole harbour in 1992 to watch Barfleur sail in on her maiden voyage. We travelled many times to Normandy on her. In the early days you booked a table in the restaurant and an announcement was made for Mr and Mrs that our table was ready! Different days.
I’m sure you would really love the Normandy DDay coast. There is so much history there and we found people very welcoming. We used to go in early June about the time of the Remembrance.

You should come to ride a few Greek ferries around the islands one time. They can also be busy in summer - or non-existent in winter, but there are a few older ones still sailing which are VERY interesting. Port access is better too. You can basically wander right up to the boats where they're moored and boarding is always just by foot, up the rear ramp, whenever you show up.

I went to Cherbourg many times in the late '80s when working for P&O Ferries (when they were honest ferry operators). Four crossings a day in the high season on the Portsmouth run. Many memories including when the ship was delayed leaving Cherbourg by some over zealous Brits ... police called .. they did not muck about, I can tell you! I've since toured the Loire Valley and Brittany .. look up the Nantes-Brest Canal; very interesting ... thanks for yet another great video. Merci, even.

I travel from the south of England to the western Highlands in Scotland regularly to go wild camping and walking. I always enjoy the time I spend there but I drive up overnight, and the journey is almost as special as the time away. Something about empty dark roads and motorways, and being up and out while everyone sleeps. It's really cool.

One thing I love about your videos is when you visit a location, you take lots of footage of the location itself from your POV, which I love. A lot of youtube travel videos by others is footage of the person talking into the camera as they walk through the location and they forget to actually record much of where they're visiting. Cheers.

Always an entertaining vlog from you Steve. You say you’d like a boat of your own, even a small one. Rumor has it that there’s plenty of long rubber boats going cheap at Dover, and lots of life jackets too. 😇

Wow. Cherbourg is stunning. You and Alicja owe it to yourselves to spend a romantic weekend there, with a candlelit dinner in one of those cafes. (Must have an accordion player! : )

Thanks Steve, travel like it really is, with delays, crowds, unexpected surprises, heat, wind, etc. Lovely walk round Cherbourg; the cleanliness in Europe makes me ashamed of the UK, what's happened to our pride? So looking foward to you exploring more of France. As for language, quite a few words similar to Spanish, though sound a bit different! À la prochaine, et bon voyage.

Yeah, we avoid travelling during school holidays. We used to go to France in September or June to beat the heat and crowds. Plus, my child is autistic, and busy ships would not be ideal. Cabins are our saving grace no matter how short a crossing is. Next time, check out La Cité de la Mer, the building you can see opposite the ferry port. It was where the Titanic stopped when it visited Cherbourg.

Steve you wrote on the screen: Not Another Ferry Video... But in fact they are very instructive for those of us who have not travelled much by ferry and who would like to explore this way of travel. I really appreciate learning everything you show us about ferry rides across Europe. Thank you!

Thanks Seve. Cherbourg was quite a rough town back in the 70s and 80s but seems much better now although a bit iffy in places. Think I would just stay in the cafe areas. I detest crowded ferries. That one was a nightmare but I feel sorry for the families with kids. Probably have to drive many miles home during the night after disembarking. Very difficult. Thanks for sharing.

Often get the Brittany ferry from Portsmouth to Caen. Well once a year. Good service and reasonable food. The problem is you went in August, it’s French and English school holidays. I travel down in June and it’s pretty quiet. You should absolutely explore the region further it’s absolutely beautiful so much history there too.

I really liked the tour of Cherbourg and your mint lemonade (sounds yummy) and the statues in the roundabouts and the ride back to the ferry across that cool bridge. The water looks really pretty too especially when you left the harbor. The sky was gorgeous. Fun video.

I love this way of travelling and exploring you have - you're observant and friendly, and these places aren't the classic do before you die type places, all the nicer for it in many ways. Ferry ports and companies clearly need to think about their pedestrian customers more! Oh and can't believe you didn't stop for a slap up breakfast/brunch/lunch etc at one of those brasseries etc! Can't just go to Carrefour, surely!

Nice of you to feature my hometown of Poole (albeit briefly) and even nicer of you to promote it from town to city status! The Barfleur has been serving that route for as long as I can remember so it’s certainly a veteran of the seas.
I travel a lot for work and don’t often have a lot of time to go exploring but your videos are a good reminder that even if you only have an hour free it’s always worth having a look around. Many of my colleagues just hide away in their Premier Inn without taking the time to try a local restaurant or walk in a park or up a hill. I imagine it’s quite rare for a Brit to actually go into the town of Cherbourg.

just for your next trip : auberge de jeunesse means youth hostel. Maybe they offer cheap accommodation in France as they do in the UK, but I don't know. It could be worth investigating. If you like longer ferry journeys, I would suggest the one from Portsmouth to Saint-Malo. Take it as an overnight sailing to France. You will be charmed by the Intra-muros part of the harbour, the old historical town. From there, get a bus or a coach to Le Mont Saint Michel, which is relatively close by and is stunning - and enjoy the coast line between the 2, full of shellfish fisheries. Try a 'plateau de fruits de mer' in a café in the back street (sea food platter, which doesn't contains any fish!), to get the authentic French atmosphere and a cheaper menu. You could also visit la Rance producing electricity by the amplitude of the tides in that area (usine marémotrice). It should interest you.

Yes .. last weekend or Bank Holiday weekend in UK or England is utter madness .. last proper weekend .. penultimate before schools go back ... its always madness Steve ! Just stay away from motorways , driving to beaches on sunny days ( if you want to stay away from over crowding , queuing and massively busy roads ) !!

Thank you Steve for an absolutely outstanding video! The walk around Cherbourg was very enlightening. We saw a workaday French town (population 25,000) with ordinary commercial boats and simple sailing yachts in the harbour. This made a stark contrast with what you see on the Mediterranean!

We used to get the offers from a local newspaper, France for £1 (foot passenger) We’d drink and play cards, get off in Cherbourg for a few hours 🍺🍷then back home 🍺🍺😵‍💫😵‍💫 Great days!
