Yes, I know you have travelled upper class, but what you do is going to benefit more people like me, who are on a budget and have to travel across the globe to get to most of your amazing spots. Nice to see people swanning in business class, but this is real. Thanks mate.
As your friend Scott would say "I need a coffee to get me up to cruising altitude"! What an interesting trip, would never have considered Charleroi, but it saved you a heap of money. Brilliant travel tips too, like parking at Corstorphine and getting the airport bus, and that Toby Carvery breakfast was the business!. Thank you, Steve, looking forward to the next bit.
I used to work in Belgium and decided to pop home for weekend without the car (just for the craic) Charleoi to Stansted 2.50 but Stansted up to Notts, 36 quid. That was a few years ago.
I never knew André Rieu is Dutch. My late mum loved him :) Thanks you once again for taking us on a lovely trip with you. I'm sure I commented this before, but it's good to see at least one TH-camr travelling like ordinary people, instead of first or business classes, lounges, etc. Love from a cool Australia :)
@erwindewit4073 As a former tour operator who has organised more trips to see Andre Rieu than I could count (dozens over the years) I can tell you that it's a myth that it's exclusively older people going to see him. If you watch some of the many videos he produces- including the free videos he uploads to youtube, you'll see in the audience that there's as many young as older people.
I really appreciate the way you budget these trips; endless inspiration for trips I could actually afford, and to places that maybe don't get a look in but are still brilliant to explore. Thank you!
I am led to believe that Steve knows the travel industry. His ability to navigate buses, trains, planes, ferries, and timetables in a manner that would leave me in a cold sweat is both enviable and admirable.
His performances are very theatrical, musical shows. With an orchestra and dancers and special lighting etc... many people love it! Me myself, I prefer small jazz/funk/soul ensembles and electronic music.
Couldn't sleep so where to go but to check your older videos. This was amazing as I'm up the same time you were starting your travels. I love to travel at nights the roads are clear and the planes less crowded. This was awesome. Your face is your bread and butter 🙂 Your expressions are a hoot!
I once flew into Charleroi on a flight from Italy and flew out two days later - from a totally different airport! They had closed an old airport and opened a new one during our short stay there. We were among the first twenty people to use the new one.
Travel tip- bring an umbrella for the sun. You'll always be in the shade. Stood in a queue in Lisbon for the monastery for 30 minutes and it worked like a charm.
Assuming you mean the monastery at Belem, I suggest going there from about 3:00 pm onwards, as there will probably only be a small queue (or no queue), because all the coach parties come in the morning or at lunchtime.
Maastricht! I was jumping up and down on my sofa when you told the destination. Been there a few times, love the city. Station, streets, shops, hotels, bridge - everything soooo familiar. Can't wait for the next videos. Thx Steve ❤
You certainly go that extra mile to keep the adventure rolling. I guess I'm one of many who appreciate the quality and amount of work that goes into your videos. Thanks for sharing Steve.
Love your videos especially the fact that you do everything yourself(realize its alot of work for you)and give your honest opinion. I really appreciate the terrific videos.
I spent 3 yrs living in Holland and working back in my 20s (1980s) , Holland is a beautiful country and many of the towns and cities are like this , I had a friend who lived in Maastrict and travelled to work in Amsterdam daily so out of courtesy we would meet up in the train station on a Saturday morning and I'd spend the weekend at his.....I find alot of Holland is sensibly priced even today as long as you take the trouble to look and book wisely , it's certainly still able to be done on a tighter budget quite successfully, just for a heads up as I also spent time in Belgium , Liege is a beautiful place to visit and well worth you adding that one to your list if you haven't already visited ....some great history there and buildings to match, vibrant especially on market days . Great vid as always Steve showing you don't have to be rolling in cash to get out and see parts of the world 👍
I have to agree with you about the front seats on the coach not necessarily being the best. We paid extra to sit up front on a Flixbus from Catania to Palermo last year, only for the driver to pull his sun blind down 🤷♂️😂. Another very informative (and helpful) video for newbies like ourselves, thanks Steve 👍
In the mid 80s we once booked an upfront non smoking coach seat from Victoria Coach Station in London (what a shit hole that place was) to Durham. The driver puffed on his pipe right in front of us for a good bit of the journey. Never did that again. Went back to the train.
Thanks Steve … brings back great memories from last year where I had a week visiting Leuven , Maastricht, Aachen , Monschau , Wuppertal and a brief stop in Cologne. Having seen you arrive in Charleroi I would love you to do more Belgium trips sampling the beer and great cities . For me Belgium is a hidden gem and highly recommend places like Dinnant , Namur , Mons as well as the more popular cities of Brugge, Ghent , Brussels and Antwerp ….good old Ryanair .
@@steve-marsh Don't forget Ostend and the Café Botteltje with over 350 beers on the menu and decent food and cool vibe. It is a beer drinkers paradise! The Belgians say Trappist Westvleteren is the best beer in the world and it was a cool €23 per 330 bottle in the restaurant. I was lucky enough to try it on someone else's expenses👍, my verdict is at this level it is more down to personal preference, so I go with a Westmalle tripel, again each to his own! Also a shout out for Chimay Blonde and Duvel Tripel Hop👍
Hi Steve, another brilliant video, this is how I'm going to spend my time when I retire in a few years! Cheap short breaks to parts of Europe I've not seen yet. Don't think I could hack leaving my motor on Costorphine road tho, I prefer airport parking as they are insured and I drive an old Aston Martin & id be terrified something happened to her! Great vid as usual, more please!👍👏👏👏♥️
I'm flying out of Edinburgh next week I just forked out £53 for airport parking! I do usually park at a friends and hop on the tram or airport bus but I land really late on my return and don't fancy the journey back to my car after landing. Expences quickly add up when you are travelling without realising so videos like this are really helpful!
As a Andre Rieu fan It's impossible to think of Maastricht without him I can highly recement going to his concert, he's amazing. He also does his concert in his hometown touring the summer at the big Vrijthof square.
Great video as ever. Good comparison with towns in GB. Seems a unique downtrend to be honest - after a quick visit to Breda earlier this year I found the same. Great country to visit and lovely towns and cities to see.
I could almost taste that Toby breakfast and the waffle! That Flibco terminal was a construction site the last time I passed by. It does look pretty impressive. It's amazing what happens to an airport when Ryanair arrives. You mentioned how European towns are buzzing, while British towns aren't. Earlier this year I read an EU article about what was wrong with the UK economy. Three things (without getting political) - Brexit, the growing disparity between rich and poor, and the UK just doesn't produce as much as she once did. Sigh.
It's a real sad feeling to compare bustling European towns and cities to what's happening back home. Thank god we still have our fantastic wilderness, humour, music etc, but in so many other ways we're dropping further and further behind what's even acceptable. On a brighter note, Charleroi is looking fantastic, my expectations have always been low arriving there, and maybe the sunny day made a difference, but it was almost like a cafe culture vibe :)
Looks to be a lovely place, I'm sure you'll do a great job showing us around. Very interesting seeing how you save money on the trips, at the extra cost of sleep of course.
Great idea parking up and getting the bus to the airport, even to drop someone off costs about a fiver. Looks a lovely town and hotel looks great. Looking forward to seeing your next videos.
