    @houseoffire72 I have been spraying Polycrylic ever since it came out and have learned quite a few tips, I'll share them with you and everyone else here.
    Since it is water based, thin the polycrylic with 10-15% water and mix in cup. This allows it to shoot like any auto poly's or urethanes. This also keeps the poly "wetter" during application so the atomized poly doesn't dry mid-flight.
    I use a 1.4 tip at 28 psi. Same rules apply, keep the gun moving and better to have 3-4 smooth coats than saturate 1-2 coats.
    Please give it a try and let me know what you think.

      Do you have to wash the gun in between coats so it doesn’t gum up or does the water base keep it from drying?

    • @BublisC
      @BublisC 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@leblunt27 you don’t need to wash the gun in between coats. When you’re spraying, your flash time in between coats is different because you aren’t actually coming in contact with your application surface.
      I usually space my coat times about 15-20 minutes apart. Just make sure you aren’t making it too “wet” on your vertical surfaces or else you will get a run. If you get a run, no big deal, let it dry, hard block sand it, and put one final coat on it.

      Do you sand between coats when spraying poly? Thanks for the thinning tip.

    Thanks for the visual on spraying Polycrylic. I've sprayed everything else in the world, and only brushed PC. Looks like it goes on about like I would expect. BTW, HVLP means "high volume of AIR" at a "low pressure" as compared to standard guns. You are spot on about laying this on wet since it does dry fast (try brushing it LOL). More pressure at the gun gives a finer mist. Opening up the product needle or moving slower increases film thickness. Cheers.

      I don't remember what I said about hvlp but thats what I ment lol. Pretty much any finish can be sprayed well if one understands the product and how to manipulate it if needed...

    I think the key to spraying polyacrylic is to do it while rockin to AC/DC.

  • @phrankus2009
    @phrankus2009 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Surprised you to not get foamy bubbles (bubbly foam) ... I used to use acrylic (the kind that you use to completely fill and "encase" a rough surface) and we used to add catalyst (hardener) and stir that in VERY slowly, to avoid bubbles. ... I guess this poly-crylic is not as sensitive (or as thick). ... Anyway, the finished product looks VERY durable and attractive ... Nice, uniform, subdued sheen.

    heck i sprayed cars for five years, and i saw one new construction crew (home) use a gravity gun for the base trim, great idea, thinking about a air brush for my leather work....

    • @houseoffire72
      @houseoffire72  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nice easy way to finish up the base for sure - we did a whole house with maple trim already installed that we had to hang plastic tape etc... what a pain!!! I think an air brush would be the cats meow for leather work - all the different shadings etc that could be done...

    • @houseoffire72
      @houseoffire72  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      swisstyphoon1 I wait till its dry then sand after each coat typically unless its just a flat surface - I lay on a cpl good heavy coats about 8 mills thick each then use a scraper to flaten the orange peel - last coat is super thin.

    • @houseoffire72
      @houseoffire72  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nope sorry I have not. For most of my finishing projects I use Watco Laquer Or Shelac & some times a pre cat product - my ex bro in law would sometimes use upto 2-3% distilled water to thin it down. He seem to have good results. Spray a test panel to test.

    • @houseoffire72
      @houseoffire72  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rozanna Violins your very welcome. The bigger the compressor the less the it will run having a larger tank to store more air... I just use a small pancake type compressor - its not ideal but it works.

      WOW! Thanks for the fast response. Yeah, I noticed that the air is considerably warmer. I was just wondering if the turbine gun would work since you specifically point out to lower the air pressue at the gun on your HVLP, and I don't have that luxury with the turbine.

      Thank you for the reply! This message will be long, help is much appreciated, I have no idea what im doing. I just made a desk out of a door. its 27" x 80". I painted it with Behr Alkyd paint. The first few coats I used a 4" roller, I wasnt able to get the roller marks out and I hate roller marks. So I went to Walmart and got a cheapo airless sprayer. The Alkyd paint is quite thick, and the sprayer I got was having a difficult time atomizing the paint resulting in a lot of spatter from the gun, so I was left with a quite textured finish. Which I really dont mind, its uniform which is most importan and got rid of all the roller marks. Sine this is a computer desk that I am going to be using every single day, I want the finish to be very durable. Able to stand up to the things a computer desk goes up against everyday. I was thinking about applying several coats of Polycrylic with my sprayer, laying them on thicker allowing it to flow to fill all the low points of the textured paint. Sanding between. Will this help my smooth out the textured surface and will it give me a very durable finish? Thank so much!

      +Sean Williams It will help of course but depending on how textured it is it might be good to lightly sand before applying the finish... Also the paint could be thinned down but I wouldnt go over approx 10%... Unsure of what type of thinner to use with that paint but if it is thinned it will spray & flow out better filling in the texture... Plexiglass would be an affordable way to get it smooth by covering it...

    • @houseoffire72
      @houseoffire72  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Sean Williams It dedinately has a texture... I would lightly sand then spary again with a thinned down paint and as a final coat I would spray the poly...
