    I was paralyzed from the neck down. Spent about 30 seconds or so feeling sorry for myself. Started thinking about what jobs I could do. I was fortunate and eventually recovered use of my legs but have some other physical problems still. Doctors weren't sure if I would recover. I was blessed and thank God I am still alive. They thought they lost me on the table. I appreciate life more now.

      I'm sorry, but if what you wrote is true I find your attitude quite incomprehensible. I am not impressed when I hear someone who believed they were a quadriplegic was upset about it for 30 seconds before moving on with their life and focusing on the things they could do.
      It sounds absurd and unrealistic.
      Why do you think it is negative or inappropriate to grieve the fact that you have lost the use of your arms and legs forever?
      How could you not be devastated?
      It doesn't impress or motivate me when I read comments like yours.
      You have been dealt a savage blow and should be able to acknowledge that reality without apology or shame.
      I would feel far more inspired by a vulnerable response to such a shattering experience and be no less admiring of you for expressing your pain, anger and grief as you slowly came to accept your new reality and tried to adapt to your new way of life.

    • @philipbutler2488
      @philipbutler2488 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@markmooroolbark252 Apparently you missed the part where I recovered the use of my legs and the Doctors weren't sure if it was permanent. Thank goodness it was temporary. I grew up with a guy who was paralyzed from the waist down and He was an inspiration. I have nothing to complain about or feel pity about. I can walk.

    • @markmooroolbark252
      @markmooroolbark252 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@philipbutler2488 You said you were paralysed from the neck down and spent 30 seconds feeling sorry for yourself. You didn't say you stopped feeling sorry for yourself when you regained the use of your legs.
      I am very happy to hear you recovered. I simply find the cult of dismissing the idea of feeling sorry for yourself when you experience a devastating physical injury ridiculous and insane.
      Do we make the same claim on people who lose a child to an illness or accident? Do we tell them not to feel sorry for themselves or spend time grieving what they have lost? Of course we don't. Well I see no reason to pressure those who receive a physical disability to get over it and radiate positivity.
      People need time to grieve, rage and weep before they are ready to step back into life and embrace their new reality.

    The 14th one:
    Stop hiding away from life on the internet. You’re just giving yourself small temporary endorphin boosts (like a drug) and it gives you temporary justification for being lazy and not living your life. If you continue down this road you’ll be nothing. Get out there. Start living life. Let go of the internet. If you’re reading this and it triggers you, then I may have just saved your life. Trust me, nobody wants to talk about how dangerous it is to always be on the internet because it’s a safe space for a lot of people, but it’s the root of many peoples issues and they don’t even know it. It’s so bad for you.

      Embrace it. Failure is part of success. You can't possibly except yourself to be successful immediately without any failure.Take a look at Astronauts for example they didn't land on moon on their first try. They had to overcome countless obstacles to eventually land on the moon

    I need help with making decisions. I have messed up my 20s not being able to decide in academics, relationship, work and now currently choosing a life partner. Can you make content regarding that? Big fan of your work

    • @OnePercentBetter
      @OnePercentBetter  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi Aahnaf. Plent of time to continue developing yourself. It's not abnormal to not have clarity in your early 20's. Alot of our existing videos cover relationships. What are some video titles you would like to see? We will be coming out with paid courses on One Percent Academy to explore the topics you've mentioned if you have interest. See you around!

    • @robinrubendunst869
      @robinrubendunst869 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Aahnaf, you were exploring your options. Don’t frame it like it was a waste of time, even the time you were least productive (too much tv, video games, partying, etc.). Your best years are ahead of you, so take the information you gathered during your twenties and move ahead. Don’t let it become an ingrained pattern/behavior. Focus on being productive in one or two areas of your life everyday.
      Great books to keep you motivated:
      The Raid Less Traveled
      7 Habits of Highly Effective People
      Audio lectures:
      The Psychology of Winning (Dennis Waitley)
      As far as making decisions, ambivalence can be tough.

  • @Tsotha

    Interesting video. Several of the tips given here I have already arrived at independently on my own within the last couple years. However, the key to realising those insights was for me something that the video does NOT mention - at least not directly: Once I start viewing my own self as an artificial construct created in part by the cultural influences I have absorbed by the society I grew up in, in part by the specific combination of memories I pick as most important for me and the narrative I actively arrange those in RIGHT NOW, it becomes much easier for me to abandon old habits I know to be harmful and change my routine. Granted, this does in part fall into the "don't dwell under the past" category and most of those insights I've arrived at while meditating just as the video instructs me to but the video does not quite put them in those terms. Once I experienced the type of "ego death" I just described, most of the other advice flowed naturally from that once it "clicked".

    I think the only one that answers in the affirmative is “ignore the unchangeables”. These 13 points, although valid and are good strategies for being a mentally strong person, could be answered in the affirmative.
    Instead of “Don’t feel sorry”, Be apologetic.
    Instead of “Don’t give away power”, keep your power.
    Instead of “Don’t fear change”, embrace change.
    The simple restructure of these ideals can mean different things. “Do’s” have more power than “Don’ts”.
    Does anyone share that same sentiment?

    • @robinrubendunst869
      @robinrubendunst869 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Different strokes for different folks. The don’t statements might trigger a person to think about and analyze their current behavior. “Hmmm, how do I give away my power. When have I done that, how did it make me feel and how did it hold me back?” THEN the process could lead to your suggestion of framing it in the positive. Dennis Waitley said it’s harder to take action on a negative directive if you have to reverse engineer it,

    • @Radman8126
      @Radman8126 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Robin I see what you are saying for sure. How my mind works, I have to think of action, rather than inaction. Do’s rather than don’ts.
      Thanks for the response!

    It's funny because so much of what you said has been said to me by my mother, grandmother, brother, and many close others. Things like being told "There's always been something special about you" "There isn't any room for failure" "Either you're at the top or what's the point?" "You're leaving me all alone" "Well, they shouldn't be in the road" I'm just realizing it, but it helps put the mirror on what I do as well. Awareness of something is so cool.

    I’ve been told i was “special” by people and i do like to believe i have unique thinking, unique talents, but i also know i am nothing unusual at all and am not better than anyone; i still want to be different, better in a sense, which i know is flawed; how do i deal with that emotionally - how do i stop my emotions from deceiving me I am “smth else”

  • @changen4125
    @changen4125 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I really liked your your tip on managing your anger and giving away the power of your emotions to another person.
    I used to get super mad as a teen. I actually mashed up my neighbor's apartment window one night when I was a kid since he thought it was funny to lock me out of the building. The lesson I learned from my dad was that you are giving your own powers to some else. You are letting someone else control you and your actions. Never give away your own choice of action and power.
