I can’t play this too well - and I can’t play Donna Lee perfectly either, although I’ve played the bass for 45 years. The problem is the timing, and tabs doesn’t help much there. So I find it hard to believe that lack of tabs would stop anyone from learning to play this…

Not really, I think if you're interested in this style then having a 5 is pretty important. If that's not an option right now, you could either shift the lower lines up an octave, or tuning to BEAD with some thicker strings maybe for a middle ground. Check out sharays yt channel too, he's using a 5 often
