Scott, you always give props to other Bass players which is very honorable. But your awesome Bass playing ability can not be overlooked. And as a Black man that grew up on Funk, you definitely have that Funk in your soul my brother. And it makes me smile from ear to ear every time I watch you doing your thing. Your teaching videos are outstanding, please don't ever stop sharing your positive energy and talent with us Sir.
Hear hear Red! Incidentally, despite all the basses that are out there, all the new shapes, new woods, 5 and 6 strings, etc, there's still no more beautiful bass than a good old Fender P.
Ricthie Backmore once said that if you wanted to learn good lines an melodies and how to create great harmonic lines..guitarists should listen to sax players..:)
Sharay is my favorite bass player especially in gospel. He's the best. I play bass at church, and I've been wanting to learn his joy to the world lick forever lol
1:17 This is what makes music so amazing. Watch the drummer’s face. No matter the style, how accomplished you are or how long you’ve played. When you get in that groove, you have to smile. Love that.
Amen, now you're a new man, old things are put away, I've been playing bass since 1968 and I can truly say, if you put God first he will put you first keep playing for the church and encourage the people of God, don't forget to learn a little piano too because sometimes single bass notes gets a little lonely when you need to hear a full chord when I put together a song, learning piano will come in handy. Playing bass since 1968 Playing Piano since 2012 I've learned how to play the piano from TH-cam 12 years ago. Right now it's March of 2024 still on fire.for our God gospel music is all I play amen.
I love that you’re highlighting gospel players. I cut my teeth on these guys back in the early 90’s. Check out Lanar ‘Kern’ Brantley. He’s one of the best. He’s played for everyone, but my favorite gospel session of his is on The Winans “Live at Carnegie Hall.” Tasty slap player.
I love you playing gospel music. Sounding fantastic. This was a really great lesson and something that can apply to any lick that anyone knows or are learning.
You're ubiquitous for bass here on TH-cam, and frankly I got tired of seeing "Why this bass sucks" "Why 5-string is this or that" etc. and I dismissed you, and avoided you. I clicked on this video accidentally, wow Scott you really are one hell of a player. What a great approach of taking a great fill & starting it on 2, 3, then 4. So brilliantly simple. Just great.
Mr Devine...you spoil us sir!! This is an absolutely amazing and mind blowing lesson - one I'm going to use regularly...don't know how to say "Thank you" enough...needless to say I've forwarded to all my other Bass player buddies...you are an absolute gentleman....
You sir, are a legend. I've been listening to this song, even played it at church service a couple of times, and yet, you have put a new twist to it on an awesome lesson!!!
That's just amazing, I'm a guitarist songwriter (last 50 years) and because I enjoy your wonderful videos! so much, I now have my 'Amoon' bass in hand...So it's down to the studio with this 4 stringed instrument , for 'blue glitter' bass lines. Thank you so much, you not only have a rare love for music but you have that also for teaching, thanks!
Scott Bass... you have the best tutorials, actually ive been playing bass for 10years but I started afresh from your tutorials. You really explain well and my bass playing has changed since
Just getting back into playing after 18 years and stumbled upon your channel. Awesome video. Aside from teaching how to play well, you're demonstrating how to have lots of fun while doing it. Your joy is infectious. Cheers mate!
So good! Brilliant to take a simple lick and make it so versatile by starting on various beats. My brain just defaults to the same thing every time. This breaks me out of that cycle. And love Israel Houghton! Thanks for throwing in some gospel jams.
That was a really powerful lesson. It takes everything you already know and puts it in a new context. 3 new contexts really. Thanks so much for this. That unlocked a lot of potential that’s been hiding in an elusive little corner for some time. I’m looking forward to “playing over the bar” soon.
Holy shit this video. 2 things. 1. I want the thumbnail to every video where Scott features another bassist to have Scott in the background giving the horns. Just like this one. 2. When you moved the lick to beat 3, I felt it. When you moved it beat 4, I made an ugly face and shouted "Damn!". Every time around. This is one of the best ones you've done yet, Scott. Much love. I'll be in the shed if you need me.
That puts a lot of things together, even finger positioning, in terms of right hand, and where you are going to be to be ready to drop down to the next string and which finger does what. Reversing that lick would be a cool asset to the fill catologue as well:)
Also check out Steve Huff. He was bass player for the Milton Brunson's Thompson Community Singers in 90's. He's a monster bassplayer with great lines and fills.
Man you're such a joy to watch playing man. When you're feeling it, you know? I'm a guitarist myself but boy do you have me considering to get a proper P bass!
Yeaaaa I'm a Newbie with the Bass, Been playing Guitar & Harmonica for Years. Semi-Retired Pro Stagehand & Tech. Now have a home Recording Studio and Getting Serious. Ready to make my mark, ThanxXx \m/ @@ \m/ Sooo Much You Are Appreciated
Till this day. I love the way Ant used to walk his bass lines. So timing in his licks and just goes with the song he's playing at the moment. Anthony just had it😂
How cool is this?! I've just filled up with energy for all weekend! Tonight my Funk Blues band is having a gig, I'm going to try out some of this stuff
Awesome, that blew my mind. I’m a tuba player and can’t play that lick up to speed, but I have some bits of my own I’m going to try on all four counts!
How many of my absolute FAVORITE gospel players can you include in one video??!? Another couple greats, that fit right in with these licks: Jermaine Morgan and Darrell Freeman!💛 Great lesson Scott.
Scott, you always give props to other Bass players which is very honorable. But your awesome Bass playing ability can not be overlooked.

here here! sometimes i have to rewatch videos cause i forget I'm trying to learn from Scott and not just watch and admire his abilities!!
Hear hear Red! Incidentally, despite all the basses that are out there, all the new shapes, new woods, 5 and 6 strings, etc, there's still no more beautiful bass than a good old Fender P.
@@DamnZoobler EXACTLY!!
Scotty the Truth!
I’m about a third of the way through the Jazz Accelerator course. It’s great and so is Scott!
Uhhhhh....this guy Scott is a sick...sick...sick azzzzz bass player! Lets give Scott some love for being such a great musician!!!!
Interesting choice for the thumbnail there, making devil horns behind a gospel player.
Scott has been worshiping Satan for years dude I thought everyone knew about that. Sold his soul for bass chops.
You're the last person I expected to see here Adam
u telling me adam ragusea left a comment and in a whole 2 years only got 14 likes? crazy
I agree 🤔
😂😂
Gospel Bassists are pure 🔥.
Those guys ALWAYS amaze me.
🔥🔥🔥
I'm a sax player and have no bass ambitions at all, but your videos are great fun and always informative! Keep em coming.
Graeme Gerrard
Im a bass player and have no sax ambitions at all, why is this sounding gross when a bass player says it haha just jokin man!
I’ve been a sax player for 24 years, but I’m also learning the bass, and will be learning lead.
Ricthie Backmore once said that if you wanted to learn good lines an melodies and how to create great harmonic lines..guitarists should listen to sax players..:)
originally started on Sax and switched to bass!
Graeme Gerrard I’m a guitar player....and I learnt the bass TO PERFECTION..........in less than a week. #toolofignorance 🕶
Sharay is my favorite bass player especially in gospel. He's the best. I play bass at church, and I've been wanting to learn his joy to the world lick forever lol

Not only did I learn a cool bass lick but I think I just got saved as well! Thanks Scott!

Thanks for FINALLY mentioning some of gospel music's incredible bassists👌👍!
I knew Scott was good, but when i saw this video my respect for his bass playing went through the roof.
April 2020 and I’ve come back to this not to learn the lick but to rewatch your jam at the beginning to the song 😭👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
I honestly think this is one of the best videos you have ever done, thank you for sharing.

I just love the groove fills you added on the song aside from the main lick. Great to hear. Can't stop repeating this video. 👍👍👍😁
Scott, you killin it, bruh!!! Great playing, my man.
Always love your no-nonsense, GREAT engaging presentations. Sir Scott.
Amazing! I’ve decided to pick the bass back up. Your skills and passion are truly motivational.
Priceless. We Black folks in states know the UK got SOUL for days. They keep tasty across the pond. Scotty's bass face says it all. Great stuff.
Did not think Scott could handle gospel genre!! He is a beast!!!!!!!
Just getting back into playing after 18 years and stumbled upon your channel. Awesome video. Aside from teaching how to play well, you're demonstrating how to have lots of fun while doing it. Your joy is infectious. Cheers mate!

Watching how much fun you had while demonstrating this is great.
That was a really powerful lesson. It takes everything you already know and puts it in a new context. 3 new contexts really. Thanks so much for this. That unlocked a lot of potential that’s been hiding in an elusive little corner for some time. I’m looking forward to “playing over the bar” soon.
You're brilliant mate and you have got a great attitude. I really like this channel

Letsssss go I’ve been wanting to get into gospel bass, this is perfect
Tried this on my bass, it just slap me back. Cool stuff sir
I'm a metal guy, but this stuff pops. Love it
10:10-10:17 was the best part in this whole video. I've never heard any bassists rip the bridge apart like that! STRAIGHT FIREEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!
I played several Israel Houghton songs at church. Wow they were fun fun fun on the bass
Great video!
This video and its teachings are SO useful, no matter which instrument you play as well! Many thanks!
3:21..... teach my wise one!!! That was the cleanest lick I have ever heard with this song and I love that song lol
Thanks so much Scott! I dig every last one of your gospel licks! I'd love to see Maurice Fitzgerald breakdown.
🤜🏾⚡🤛🏻
wow, I love this! I never would have thought to do this. Thanks Scott!
Scott is awesome!!!
god bless u scott . So useful knowledge everytime
Du bist ein wirklich toller Bassist. Ich liebe deine Natürlichkeit, deine Einlassung auf alle Bassisten und dein Können!! Wunderbar!!
That puts a lot of things together, even finger positioning, in terms of right hand, and where you are going to be to be ready to drop down to the next string and which finger does what. Reversing that lick would be a cool asset to the fill catologue as well:)
Scott, you rocked that lick! I look forward to seeing more gospel licks like this.
Really love matching
the theory to the "feel". Putting this in on Sunday!
This is my favorite lesson Scott. This is awesome!!!!

Anthony Jackson is the earliest proponent of 'over the bar' playing that I can think of. Way before the gospel guys.
JnrRumble
Yep. Especially when he was with
Steve Khan and Eyewitness in the late 70's and real early 80's
A lot of gospel guys were inspired by Anthony Jackson.
Till this day. I love the way Ant used to walk his bass lines. So timing in his licks and just goes with the song he's playing at the moment. Anthony just had it😂
James Jameson did with Motown before AJ. Listen to "It's a Shame" by the Spinners and For Once In My Life...Stevie Wonder's version.
Sir Scott you are a blessing !!
Holy cow my mind is blown. Please more gospel videos thanks
Reggie is awesome!!! Scott you should be doing more gospel because this is one of the greatest times I have heard your fantastic tone..

I've just filled up with energy for all weekend!
Tonight my Funk Blues band is having a gig, I'm going to try out some of this stuff

I knew u was a cool guy !!! Always enjoy your videos.
Fantastic lesson Scott!!! You're such a blessing sir!
Scott, you gotta get SHARRAY REED in there mate. His fills and mute techniques, double taps a-la James Jamerson/Chuck Rainey like, are amazing.
BlackRoots UNLIMITED TShaka Roots Mayanja 🙏🏼
And your wish came true lol
I would love to see Sharay Reed on here!
Just hear those notes and I can feel very happy!!!!

Such a fun tip - and will be scouring the comments for more gospel players to look at, as I've been really digging gospel grooves lately!
You’re the MAN Scotty!
I could tell you were having so much fun with this video. It would be dope if you had Daric Bennett on here. He’s a monster on bass.
How many of my absolute FAVORITE gospel players can you include in one video??!?
Another couple greats, that fit right in with these licks: Jermaine Morgan and Darrell Freeman!💛
Great lesson Scott.

Just fantastic Scott!!
