Transcribed this piece recently for fun, lots of cool syncopation between the left and right panned clavinet sound. Tried to then recreate it on two guitars and bass, with a VST drum kit (provided by NI Battery).

Bass Tabs for 'For Once in my Life' by Stevie Wonder (James Jamerson)
มุมมอง 5973 ปีที่แล้ว
Used a bit of EQ and phase cancellation to bring out the bass a bit more. It even removed the drums almost entirely! Fingering is down at the first position for true Jamerson style. As always though, it's up to you where you play the notes. Try playing it with only one finger in the right hand, for extra authenticity.

Crazy!
Thx bro
preciate you big dawg
google must be listening to me i literally was thinking about this like 10 minss ago
yeah!!!! E' possibile avere la trascizione per basso ?
This bass line of Sharay Reed is simply amazing. He has impeccable timing and all these subtle dead notes just enhance the rhythmic feel. I can’t play this too well - and I can’t play Donna Lee perfectly either, although I’ve played the bass for 45 years. The problem is the timing, and tabs doesn’t help much there. So I find it hard to believe that lack of tabs would stop anyone from learning to play this…
Man is there a 4 string version of this?
Not really, I think if you're interested in this style then having a 5 is pretty important. If that's not an option right now, you could either shift the lower lines up an octave, or tuning to BEAD with some thicker strings maybe for a middle ground. Check out sharays yt channel too, he's using a 5 often
In bar 34, that 15 on the D string is almost impossible. It rings clear in the recording but in the live performance, he messes it up and it comes out muted. In the next bar, he uses his middle finger to help him bar the 15 which makes the 15 on the D easier. But barring the 15 with both fingers and fretting the 18 on the A with his ring finger is insane. I can barely do it with my pinky.
Good research! Checking live versions is always good for a reality check vs a studio recording that might have been cleaned up. If there's anything I can add, rotating the barre finger slightly can flatten the edge and make it easier to apply pressure. Action is another factor, I don't know for sure but Vic might have quite low action/light touch which would help. And otherwise just practicing barring the 15 and playing all 4 strings to check for clarity. In addition it's not necessarily barre pressure that's the culprit but perhaps the finger playing the 18 sometimes touches/mutes the D string. So yeah a challenging bar for sure! There's also wrist position and angle of the bass neck which can make a difference
Tabs?
wow thank you so much I've been looking for this for ages thank you!!
this wrong
thanks for the feedback! Which bit?
@@yamezzyLOL, I'm sure there may be a note or ghost note that's out of place, but it's got the feel of the original, which is by far the most important thing. I like the way you throw those 16th-note open string notes in there, Other transcriptions I've seen don't bother, and aren't nearly as much fun to play. The only thing that eats at me is that in the original song, I kinda hear a C natural instead of a C# on the 3nd bar of the four bar verse riff. It's under a D chord, giving it a D7 sound. Some players on youtube seem to play it that way, but I've never seen a transcription that reflects that. Every transcription, including yours, says C#. Which is probably correct.
@aquamarine99911 thanks for the interesting comment! Yeah the extra articulations like the open strings certainly add to the fun My thought would be.. If we're in A major, the C chord is kinda borrowed from A minor, and under the B the bass is playing E on the strong beats, so maybe it's more of an E9 chord, which gives more harmonic gravity back to the A with each repetition. So my point there I suppose would be that a diatonic D chord in the key would be DMaj7 rather than D7, so that's perhaps why C# works to my ear. But if you're hearing it as a D7, then yeah C would fit better. I wrote this transcription before the variety of stem splitting algorithms were available like Moises, so I just double checked and it is a C# on the original. But, that's not to stop anyone playing C instead, if they like! Thanks again
Thanks so much, I love your work ❤ 🎼
Thank you!
Perfect loop
Amazing!!
what software do you use to make this? Thank you so much for sharing!
No problem! For the tab playback I use Guitar Pro, is that what you mean?
Thanks for posting this. Helps us appreciate this mind blowing bass performance even more. It'll be a while before I can do this justice on my bass, if ever.
this short is the most helpful one yet for this lick

Excellent. Dave Hofstra did the recording, it was before Tracy joined the band.
th-cam.com/video/OXIZJsLiJec/w-d-xo.html
No he didn't.
@@yamezzyJust to be clear, in this link the actual writer of the song is "giving a shout out" to Tracy for taking his rudimentary bass line and turning into something legendary. So there is no controversy - it's Tracy Wormworth's bass line. It's only been the subject of online questioning because the song was recorded in 1981 and Tracy didn't officially join the band until 1982. But her Bass Player magazine interview and the above link should resolve all doubt. No-one else - including Dave Hofstra - claims it. And it's famous enough that you would think Dave would come forward.
Great cover 👍 Just subscribed to your channel after watching your video.. Great to see a good song being covered well, and especially with bass tabs 👍.. I'm self taught at the moment and it's hard to find bass tabs sometimes, it seems to be all for guitar and no bass (very bassist ☹) should be a law against it 😆😅... could you try and tab Weightless by Elbow? Such a cool song, but again no tab to be found anywhere 😫
Thanks! I had a look at Weightless, it is a cool one. In fact I'd suggest it as a great opportunity for a bit of working out the line without tabs. I love tabs, but would usually suggest it as a second step, after having a quick go without, using whatever resources there are. (I work as a teacher of guitar/bass so that mindset is usually going on in the background...) I've made a quick video that might help too here th-cam.com/video/2FmCyI-ZtNs/w-d-xo.html See how you get on, if you're not getting anywhere with it, I'd be happy to whip a tab up for it. But see whether you can get the gist from this maybe?
Amazing. I definitely subscribed. Look forward to hear more
are these tabs available for download? this is beautiful!

That's really amazing, thx alot man!
Not sure how you did this, but it's impressive!! The tabs are incredible! Nice.
Glad you liked!
Awesom! I am learning TJ&E songs lately. Thanks for the tabs and keep it funky!
Around 3:10 to like 3:40 I’m not sure is accurate, it sounds as if way more notes are played than shown
You're right, I didn't write out that part note for note since he's improvising rhythmically over the same four chord shapes so it's open to the players discretion what they do at that point
@@yamezzy ah thanks sorry, I was just a little confused and not sure if I was hearing wrong
Thank you so much !
thank you!
