    On this edition of ThePrint's Off The Cuff, Prof (Dr) Balram Bhargava, Director General, ICMR, tells Editor-in-Chief Shekhar Gupta about why he decided to write the book 'Going Viral: The Inside Story of Covaxin', documenting the challenges of developing India's indigenous Covid vaccine.
    Bhargava also talks about the fascination of having isolated the virus in India for the first time, catching monkeys from forests for animal trials, and his one regret through the pandemic.

    Such a down to earth person he is, I visited him many times while accompanying my uncle for routine consultation in AIIMS New Delhi. He was a professor in department of cardiology and regularly used to see patients in OPD. Later I came to know that he is such a big shot.

    Great interview! A lot to learn from people like him. When he says he should have been a better communicator during the whole process, disclosing that himself is not a public health specialist but got a great team behind and giving credits to everyone who was behind the development phase of the vaccine... How can a person be more humble Thank you so much sir

      The problem with democracy is if you dont have knowledge but elected by people it will have downfall.

  • @atulsaprepune

    Why is Covaxin costlier than covishield if it’s frugal inventions ? Covaxin also did not submit data on time

    • @atulsaprepune
      @atulsaprepune 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @V B covaxin by your logic should be cheaper. If the technology is developed thru ICMR then tech fees should be lower. My guess is that Bharat Biotech has many production issues and the rate of rejection are higher- especially since the it’s a inactive virus, it needs to be ensured that it is really inactive but there could be issues of virus cultivation

    • @atulsaprepune
      @atulsaprepune 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @V B so why is Dr Bharghava talking about this as frugal innovation. Given our population we would need scalable production. Today about 9 percent is covaxin while 91 percent is covishield. We could have done better by ordering more covishield instead of betting on covaxin. It is surprising that after more than 7 months of EUA covaxin has not been able to scale up

    • @atulsaprepune
      @atulsaprepune 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The real issue is that clinicians like Dr Bhargava are taking decisions rather than epidemiology experts. Remember Bhargava kept on talking of 3 wave in august, then sept then Oct now he says it’s difficult

    • @atulsaprepune
      @atulsaprepune 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @V B I understand why it cannot be scaled (somewhat) but then it’s an inappropriate vaccine for india. MfG costs are high and production cannot be scaled. Indian vaccination program needs both these features. What was covaxin issue with data ? No one has clarified ?? What extra info did WHO need? Was it production related. ? Efficacy and safety had already been established !
