    Great interview and Mr. Amitav Gosh really opened my eyes a bit more.
    Thank you Mr. Shekhar Gupta, this is the first time I am thanking you but in my heart I must have thanked you so many times ... it took time for gratitude to travel from heart to lips, simply because I fear that "thank you " in a TH-cam comment is considered to nothing. An ugly remark carries weight though.
    Dear Mr. Shekhar Gupta I am too old to imagine you or any other human to be an angel, but I know that grace must be honoured.

    Please don't try to compare India and China. Chana government can do what they want. Here, even if you try to bring something with good intentions, the politics will kill it.

    Shekhar Gupta ji is the most vocal supporter of (mostly indiscriminate) infrastructure projects such as Mumbai's coastal road, citing crumbling infrastructure in our cities. While the latter is true, the approach towards it CANNOT be indiscriminate, cannot be ONLY car-focused. There are ways to do it that are both ecologically and economically sound. People with voice such as Shekhar ji must think more critically about these things, not be burdened with old pre-conceived notions.

    I think the speaker is being too critical of India.
    When India is the only major country to reach it's 2° goals, how is it doing worse than china or canada? Regarding EV, we are building the largest EV factory for 2 wheelers and the race for EV 4 wheelers is picking up in India too. As usual, we are behind China by about a decade, why be so negative about the Indian scenario? I think this is nothing short of fear mongering.
    Even if sea level rises by 2 meters in 2050, the coastal areas of mumbai is so valuable that they would build some protection like the dutch did, in coming years.

    There needs to be some answerability for people who predict cities will submirge and so on.
    Because when I was young people were sure.. fossil fuel will be finished by year 2000.
    I am not denying climate change but denying the predictions based on it ..
    I feel since no one really knows what climate change affects will be and to what extent this effects will be, people keep making predictions with no reckoning.

    • @gomezmilkin340
      @gomezmilkin340 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Who was saying that? Scientists? Link please?
      General people would've meant that all of the current reserves will be depleted. But new reserves of oil are found all the time, and technology to extract more is evolving too.
      Also, people do know what effects of climate change will be. Your solution of wait and watch till earthquake to come to see what damage it does isn't very helpful.

    • @Rajan112358
      @Rajan112358 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gomezmilkin340 that is my point, new technologies were found not only new sites to extract oil.
      Also no one is sure how much exactly how much the crude oil is inside earth.
      Now about climate change.
      People are certainly not sure what effects will be of climate change or how sivior it will be.
      For example we keep hearing sea level will rise.
      But how much ?
      Predictions range from few inches to few feets.
      Also predictions of how much economy will be effected or how much ecology will be effected are very arbitrary.
      I am not saying wait for the earthquake.
      I am saying the best way to cope with uncertain future might not be what many climate activist say.
      That we must stop all carbon emissions and other drastic measures.
      I feel maybe investing in people is far better bet to make.
      Because once you reach certain economic level you yourself start taking interest in making air clean and ecology in general.
      But if you force people before they have reached the stage you will have difference of interest.
      So instead of doing virtue signalling, govts( wealthy nations) should make sure that human life expierence get better rapidly in poorer countries.
      Life expireance is not only education, but in general life expireance.
      If that happens there will be willingness as well as innovation
      I am betting on human ingenuity as well as goodness.
      I bet mumbai will not be under water by 2050 or even 2070
      You know why ?

    • @gomezmilkin340
      @gomezmilkin340 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Rajan112358 you don't have 50 years to "find a solution" my friend. You have 29 years to both find it and apply it (read about 2050, 1.5° goal)
      It's like a T20 game - 10 overs might seem like a lot for chasing 80 runs, but if you keep run rate slow and need 20 runs in last over, even if you have Dhoni and Jadeja at the crease, the match can be lost.
      In this case, losing isn't even an option - there isn't a next match to play.

    Don’t want to nitpick, but so many things that are factually incorrect on his comments about Mongol invasions. They completely decimated very advanced cities like Baghdad to the point of no recovery and had profound effects on advanced civilizations like China, Persia and even Kievan Rus. And they weren’t Buddhist, they were Shamanists mainly practicing Tengri (but were known to be religiously tolerant).
    There are even theories as to what would have happened if Genghis’ army would have crossed the Urals to reach Europe (much like predecessors Huns).
    However, he’s right that they weren’t extractive like later colonial powers. But this is because they existed in a pre-industrial society where agricultural revenue was more valuable. They didn’t need any raw materials en masse to mass produce products or have trade monopolies. That concept just didn’t exist.

    • @_Ironhide
      @_Ironhide 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      On his point of Colonization:
      Thailand being more advanced because they “innovated” is actually factually incorrect. Thailand was a pseudo vassal state situated between the British and French Empires. They just struck successful treaties with these powers. Nepal did the same and wasn’t technically colonized but they aren’t developed.
      Also, Hong Kong and Singapore were colonized but emerged as one of the most developed regions in all of Asia.
      Taiwan was also colonized by Japan which had a similar result.
      Japan, on the other hand, industrialized itself based on Western model during the Meiji Restoration because they were forced to open up. Before US’ Perry Expedition knowledge exchange was limited to a small pocket, ie. Nagasaki and the country was highly feudal with not much technological advancement.
      Colonization in general has been highly destructive and extractive to most countries, but beneficial to few because of the industrial knowledge and structural reform they left behind. Depends on case to case and how the rule was.
      For eg. on the same island- French colonized Haiti was a disaster whereas Spanish colonized Dominic Republic is way wealthier.

    A very pleasant conversation by pleasing (Sg, too) personalities. Knowledgeable talk.
    But I have a different take on this climate change debated.
    This discussion on climate change effects and carbon emissions should have started soon after the II world war. All the “energy” spent towards nuclear weapons should have been used for energy generation. All the money spent on ICBMs etc. should have been used for research on generation of clean energy. And so on.. and so forth…
    Tail piece: Discussion on panels and TV by “experts” now will yield little result. People have to cut down on their wants. Governments, now do not have magic wands for creating solutions in a jiffy. Every citizen of this world will need to sacrifice and contribute towards the efforts. As they say in Hindi, “Abhi, Kutch paane ke liye kutch khon padega” ( to gain something something else has to be lost).

In real life we had Rajdeep Sardesai giving wrong news on live TV.. Barkha Dutt, Karan Thapar and Rajdeep were busy in building a negative image of Modi ji,... That led to them falling from public's eye and grace... So if journalists remain true to their profession their image too will be positive in the publics eye... @@sanjaysaksena619 What's there to feel shame about? Did the western world feel any shame when doing colonization, racism, slavery & buring coal to make themselves industrialized? The British for example feel no regret or shame about their imperial empire.
      Most of the wealth that west got is exploited from Africa and India. Yes, they made innovations, but the raw materials to process were looted or procured at a cheap price from the now third world.
      What's there to be ashamed to ask for assistance in shifting to a greener economy? Maybe India can afford to make that transition on its own. But what about the African & South American nations?

      @@sanjaysaksena619 India's govt. expenditure on Defense/PSUs/subsidies is a fraction of what the western world spends.
      They spend billions of dollars on gender studies and other useless timepasses. Why can't they spend a fraction of it as assistance to the third world?
