  • What a week...! From twisted joists that we're not sure we can use to dramatic thunderstorms, it's all going on at Casa das Parreirinhas this week! Thankfully, it gives Michael time to catch up on a few overdue projects like finishing off the render on the front of the house.
    About Us 🏚️👫🏼🐈🐕🐕
    We're Michael & Becci (the humans) and Tilly (sassy English tortoiseshell cat), Alfie and Anoushka (Portuguese rescue dogs). After four years in Portugal and numerous dreams about renovating our own property, we've taken the plunge and are renovating a schist stone house and its outbuildings in Figueiró dos Vinhos. We're doing most of the work ourselves (or... Michael is!) and we'll be stepping back in time to create a character property with as many original features and antiques as possible.
    Join us for the journey and don't forget to like, subscribe and comment! We love hearing from you 💛

    You're doing a great job! Congratulation! I only hope you're going to use lime mortar to redo the joints. Without cement. Good luck!

    I wonder how the expression "and Bob's your uncle" came about? Love your version of it, planning and working towards making it a case in point. You work hard and it can't be easy doing so much on your own, but determination carries a lot of weight. There's a lot of hard heavy work I was unable to help with too. Leverage rather than brute strength is often the answer I noticed. Clever. Best wishes to you both.

      😅 haha, yes, it'd been interesting to know! I'm sure it'll have confused a few people who aren't familiar with it too! 🤣
      Thank you so much 💛

    Hope you two have a cool off place where you can take a dip.
    The hot season is hot in Portugal so pacing yourself is a must from now till the end of the summer.
    You've made incredible progress over the year, time to enjoy yourself a bit in the summer.
    Yard and land are looking beautiful.

      Thank you so much 💛 we do! We're near a river with areas you can swim in and we also have some lovely friends who invite us round for a dip! Thanks again 😊

    Almost finished the floor beams, the front of house is looking picturesque.
    If you put cardboard down underneath the wood chips it will keep the weeds down for up to 2 years.😊

    Maybe you should try and burn the sides of the joists that fit in the outer wall to prevent them from decaying.

      Thank you 😊 We will definitely treat them. We want to leave them exposed so need to work out the best way.

    Hello,
    Just so you know I was brought up to believe that it is against the grain to trim trees, including wine-stocks, after February. Trimming should be just before the tree goes into the blossoming mode. But it looks good. 🎉

      Eeek. Thank you. Hopefully they will be ok... They were just growing wild and under the roof tiles in places! 😅

    Great progress.... would you consider building a staircase from the lower level up into the upper level?

    Secure ya noggin in one end then use a sash clamp to pull the twist out and pull the joist up flush and square, then keep on repeating 🤔🫡😎

    Fair play to you, but I’m buggered if I’d wire brush that lot off, way too much work. Did you think about having it sandblasted?

    • @PortugalonaPostcard
      @PortugalonaPostcard  หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      😅 unfortunately, there are quite a lot of small stones and looser bits of stone so we're worried about damage. Plus, there's something quite satisfying about going back to basics 😊 thanks so much for watching!

    Won't noggins straighten the joists out as well as strengthening the floor?

    • @PortugalonaPostcard
      @PortugalonaPostcard  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      👍🏻 we've been thinking about how we can use the joists we have so noggins and a plane could be the answer 😊 thank you!
