A house design that appears to float by drilling into a slope in a rocky bay

NCaved is located in a secluded rocky cove that appears to float just above the surface of the sea. The need to create a protected shelter, in a location out of sight, but open to strong northerly winds, led us to the decision to drill into the slope, rather than creating a series of parallel chambers at ground level.
MOLD Architects applied a rectangular grid to the slope to produce a three-dimensional “checkerboard” consisting of solids and voids. This strict geometry is interrupted by the rotation of the final axis of the grille, which gives the living room a wider appearance. The shift in axis strengthens the sense of perspective significantly, and thus the footprint of the residence appears minimized at the conceptual end of the climb.
Longitudinal walls of dry stone create a vertical boundary that directs the visitor's gaze to the horizon line. In contrast to the solid stone walls, the transverse facade is light, made of glass and can be opened along its entire length. The front is fully open to the eastern views, while the rear windows frame the indoor garden, improving air flow and letting light into the residence.
The stairs in the cave connect the three levels externally and lead to the main entrance, located in the living room attic. This smooth descent into the interior of the house gradually reveals spaces initially hidden within the house, while framing a two-sided view: a visual exit to the sea on the way down, an exit to the sky on the way up.
The area inside the cave is the “negative” space. This is caused by cutting and removing some of the stone. It is this rustic feel of a natural cavity that we wanted to recreate with our chosen materials and color palette. Stone, exposed concrete, wood and metal are used with precision to create a sturdy inner shell.
