  • Hi, I'm Tom Wright,
    Are you curious about the Fujifilm X100V and its capabilities for personal photography?
    In this week’s podcast episode, "Do You Need the Fujifilm X100V?", I explore the camera's features and compare them to other popular models from Sony and Leica. As a professional photographer, I was blown away by Fujifilm's renowned color reproduction technology, and I believe it sets the X100V apart from the competition.
    But does its convenience and compact size come at the cost of image quality?
    You'll have to watch the video or listen in to find out!
    Join me on this journey to discover if the Fujifilm X100V is a valuable addition to your photography gear.

    Understand what you are talking about, I had the Fujifilm GFX 50R with the 50mm and 80mm lens and to this day I regret trading it in for my current system. Don't get me wrong my current system is great and I couldn't justify keeping my Fujifilm set next to it. During COVID, I used the Fujifilm 50R in combination with the 50mm to capture my neighbours in my street. A photo series that was featured on both the FujiLove website and the Fuji X Passion magazine, as well as in local newspapers. And I still enjoy looking back at these images myself. But it was also mainly a great way to get to know my neighbours more during that time of distance. Creative greetings Alain

    "Gateway drug" 😂 What a great way to describe it. I swapped from Canon to Fuji 10 years ago now (X-E1!) and have been through all the X-E series. I was running with just an X-T4 last year, and missed the small form factor. Couldn't find a X100V, of course, so bought a second hand, massively overpriced (sigh) X-E4. I've stuck a Voigtländer 27mm on it, because it's almost like a pancake. I only shoot jpg on it, using Fuji film simulations, and I'm loving the speed of shooting with no editing faff, and the results. The Voigtländer lens produces gorrrrgeous images. I've also recently picked up a X-H2s too, which is mainly used for client video work. Bizarrely, perhaps, I've not used it for stills at all, yet. But after this film Tom I think I will give it a whirl. Only recently discovered the channel, enjoying going through lots of the back catalog. Sub'd!

      The video files from the XH2s are excellent, I had issues with stills AF and ended up selling mine but I loved the video so much.

    "The best camera is the one you have with you"
    As a Sony user for the past few years I found myself leaving it at home more often than I would want to, just because I couldn't be bothered carrying it around due to weight and size, and it's not a huge camera to begin with. So in my option, it's hard to compare both since the goal for me is different. For a family event ill take the Sony with a 50/85 and get great photos with a shallow depth of field, but when I'm traveling, having a bbq with some friends or just doing some street photography, having something small and light makes a big difference for me.

    Hey Tom! I felt a similar way about the XPro1: it was my personal camera that only got used for family photos and daily life - yes it was slow, and a little temperamental at times but I loved the images I got from it and the feeling I had when using it. I bought it used and it was with me for years until unfortunately it finally broke last year. I haven’t replaced it, but I will at some point. Maybe an XPro4, maybe an XPro3, maybe an XPro2… but one thing is for sure, XPro is my jam.
    I also paired it with an X-T3 that I used in my studio to product shoot my artwork… until last month when I upgraded to an X-H2, and wow - you’re so right about the jump Fujifilm have made, along with how much of an underrated camera the X-T3 is (a great camera to pick up used for some people).
    Anyway, apologies for the rambling… it’s just interesting how people can become attached to different cameras, but also have a similar experience. Have a great week 👍

    • @bytomw
      @bytomw  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No apologies! You just listened to me wax lyrical about cameras the least I can do is return the favour!
      I remember getting an X-Pro 1 at launch and LOVING it. I was so frustrated that I couldn't use it as my main camera for work, I kept dipping my toe back into the fuji system over the years and always loved using them but couldn't make them work.
      The X-T3 was almost it and now the X-H2s is more than I'd need. I'm glad the X100V made me go back to try it again.

    Very personal and very likable statement about your preferences when choosing a camera! I can very well understand your motives, because I make the same considerations.
    I am shooting mainly landscapes and nature, and for that I love my Nikon Z- full frame- equipment with the Z 24-120mm F4.0 bread-and-butter workhorse - supplemented with the Z 14-30mm F4 at the wide end and the Z 100-400mm at the long end. When I shoot people in available light I take the fabulous Nikkor F1.8-primes: The 35, 50 or 85mm. For macro work there exists nothing better than the Nikkor Z MC 105mm F2.8 VR S.
    Nethertheless, an after looking your videos, I am also tempted to grab a GFX 50s, as I have always been interested in medium format. The images have a special look, transport a certain mood you just can't produce with smaller sensor cameras, not even with full frame.
    So it depends on my finances if and when I will get that GFX 50s with the Voigtländer Nokton 1.4.
    One question: Do you not miss sensor stabilisation on your GFX 50s, wouldn't it be more useful if it had one, what would mean buying the much more expensive GFX 50sII?
    I could buy a GFX 50s used for 1500 CHF - but the second version, the GFX 50s II, would cost me 3150 CHF.
    Kind regards from Switzerland.

    • @bytomw
      @bytomw  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For use with vintage lenses the sensor stabilisation is likely to cause more problems than it solves.
      IBIS physically moves the sensor in the body to compensate for shake/drift as the shot is taken.
      It uses the outer edges of the lenses image circle to do this. Most 35mm lenses that cover the Cropped medium format sensor don't have a lot of room to allow that IBIS to move.
      The Voigtlander 58mm for example only barely has an image circle large enough to cover the sensor in its fixed position, it has a soft but heavy vignette that's easy to repeatably remove in Lightroom.
      I wouldn't let it stop me getting a 50Sii in the future but it's not a feature I want, the smaller size and having a single battery across all my cameras would be appealing though!

    Great video! I can relate so much to the idea of fresh tools giving you a fresh perspective! The gfx is a camera I have on my bucket list, I love it’s versatility and how you can use it with different lenses from other systems.

    Love the files of the GFX the DR is incredible.
    Wish I had a compact autofocus setup sometimes for personnal events.... Just for "snappier" and less "loud" shutter ahah.
    I'm having a hard time deciding to buy a XH2S to replace the GFX. S35 is capable, hell yeah but switching to MF to APS-C is a hard bite.

    Great vid mate! 👏🏻
    I’m on the fence with the X100V. Had it for a weekend in Jan, absolutely loved it (portability etc.), but really my XT4 gives me the same (if not much better) results. Ultimately having one would be good for the sake of having a camera on me all the time, but I’m not sure the price at the moment justifies this need for me.
    Guess I need to get to the stage you have with your GFX, and bring the XT4 along always, anyway!

    LOL, I agree the 100V is a gateway drug. I got mine in Oct 2022, fell HARD in love with the system. 4-5 weeks later I got a X-H1 and some lenses. After shooting all winter, I made the tough call to sell the 100V to fund a X-H2 as I am doing more and more personal shoots. The lighter body/lenses makes it easier than carrying a FF with massive lenses. I will keep my R6 and Sigma Art primes for paid work but deep down inside, I may be keeping the lenses to adapt for future use on a GFX50s or pre-owned 100S in a few years.

    • @bytomw
      @bytomw  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That seems pretty wise to me. A bunch of the photographers I hire for larger commercial jobs still shoot canon and I’m always impressed by the art lenses.
      They strike a good balance between character and performance.

    Fuji X100V continues to be my favourite camera because it's portable, fun and quality. I don't like to carry heavy cameras anymore. GFX is a tool. I now tempted to get a Fuji X-Pro 3. Not because I need, but I want. Your thoughts on Fuji X-Pro 3?

    • @bytomw
      @bytomw  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think it depends on your preference. The Xpro3 is the same sensor as the X100v so the real question is do you want larger but faster lenses for a camera that makes files every bit as stunning as the X100V?
      If the answer is yes I think you’ll love the Xpro3. If the answer is no I think you’re already on the perfect camera for you!
      For what it’s worth I like the colours from the Xpro3 more than what I have seen from the XT5 and XH2 but a little less than the XH2s but they are all stunning.

    • @Pikseli007
      @Pikseli007 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bytomw Getting the Xpro3 would be an emotional desire, not a logical one. =D As you said, they have the same sensor. But there's one thing that MOST people forget about X100V: It has an integrated ND filter - love it! My compromise might be to get the conversion lenses (50mm and 28mm).
      You said that you've noticed a difference in colours from Xpro3. This surprised me. I've only owned and tried one camera from Fuji. Is it because the XT5 and XH2 are using a different sensor from Xpro3 and X100V? Also, do Xpro3 and X100V both produce similar colours?

    • @bytomw
      @bytomw  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Pikseli007 The sensor in the X-Pro3 is identical to the X100V, X-T3, X-T4 and X-E4. The colours are identical (aside from variations caused by the lenses you might choose).
      The Sensor from the X-H2 is used in the X-T5 also and they match together perfectly. but they also have a different character to the older sensor in the cameras above.
      The Sensor in the X-H2s is basicly my favourite ever from fuji but right now it's only in this camera (it's stacked and very expensive to produce)

    I have to stop you there and say that Leica tl2 and cl have better build quality than the x100v. They are also in the same price bracket and take excellent images in unadulterated dng format unlike fuji which is more about film simulations and all that hipster nonsense. Also if you want f1.4 for cheap, you can get sigma 1.4 contemporary which is going ridiculously cheap on l mount and if you want expensive you go get a summilux

    • @bytomw

      I'm not arguing the X100V is the perfect camera, in fact as explained I'm using it less now than ever.
      I actively recommend the Q2 and RX1RII as alternatives to fuji's cameras. I have no experience with the TL2 or CL but DNG is no different than .RAF they are both raw containers for data that needs a RAW processing engine to interpret.
      I don't shoot JPEG on my Fujifilm cameras although I know many do and love the results they get.
      To each their own.
