Well Dave, when you reviewed the Boss Katana 50 you expected something amazing and that's what you got it and it came across. So thanks for being honest about the Marshall CODE, it's rare thing for TH-cam reviewers and it's much appreciated.
Well Glenn Fricker (Sectersoundstudios) and Colin (CSGuitars) demoed the 20 and thought it rivaled the Line 6 spider 😂 I thought it might have been the small speaker but not now after seeing this demo lol
I have one too , at first I was over welled by it too . Some of the presets are crappy however I like the amp . The key is to download the Gateway app , it makes it so much easer to fine tune the sound . I also bought the upgrade foot switch to date I haven’t mastered it yet . I give it a thumbs up 👍
You need the Gateway app on your phone, and ignore the stuff already in the presets. Start by turning off the effects, select an amp and cab and get a sound you like, then add effects. This thing isn't like turning on a regular amp and getting a decent sound, like you mentioned with the or120.
15 min of video and I´m wondering if the sound of this amp will ever become pleasant. It sounds bright, fake and harsh. I think we all can tell Dave is not liking it either...
Great video as always Dave. Thanks for the honest review. Looking forward to you posting your follow-up after you've had time to mess around with it. But as for now, this makes me feel much better about my decision to go with the Boss Katana over the Marshall Code.
Hey Dave i own the Marshall code 100 2x12 combo and it's awesome. I would suggest messing with the pre fx and the pre amp and power amp models my favorite presets are numbers 51, 58, 93, and 6 I hope this helps.
As always, your playing and honesty are spot on...the amp...not a fan to be honest. Course, gave you the thumbs up all the same, cause you rock my friend.
Just unpacked the Code 100 combo amp, and it really is quite remarkable. ( Played around with it for 3 hours ) Bought the Fender GT 100 2 months ago, and the Marshal code puts it to shame, in my humble view. You have to tweak the presets significantly , but it really is awesome once you've dialed in your own tones. Out of the box, the presets are pretty bad. ( Except for 5 or 6 ) No clue about the code head that this chap has. But you'll love the Code 100 / 2x12 Combo Amp. ;)
Great playing Dave, some of the amp sounds are pretty good, but I agree, some of the distortions do sound very fizzy!!! Your playing far exceeds the sounds on that amp, great job bro !!!
I enjoy your videos so much, I made it through 30 minutes of this Code video, one of the worst, most overpriced amps in recent memory. This is a testament to how entertaining you are. :P
I tried one on Saturday. I liked the bluebreaker preset. I was tempted on exchanging my cr60 for one, but I don't think it beats the Orange. Also I had Joanne Shaw Taylor like one of my short Instagram posts with the Orange Amp being used.
Great video as always Dave, hope you have the endurance to coax some tones out of this. £250........so many better/cheaper options specially to just use at home (software for one) that switch lag is a killer my Fender Mustang does it as well between patches but not for individual pedals sims thankfully.
I have a 50 and DSL5c with a V30 in. I always end up playing the DSL. The Code just sounds both muffled and flat at the same time plus a much louder noise floor than I would like. Like they modeled it at high volume so theres hiss and fizz everywhere without ridiculous amounts of noisegate. I'm just never happy and always fiddling. It sounds best if I split the guitar signal and just use the code to add low end body to the DSL5c lol
HEY DAVE! wow when you compare this first impressions to the boss katana it is like night and day with the katana it took you just a few minutes to find both clean and over driven tones you really liked.
Those "plexis" behind him are repacked solid state amps. He just makes them sound like the real deal. Actually, he compared them to a tube head once and in my opinion he sounded a bit better on his usual solid state gear.
ya, i just bought this amp head this week. It does sound way too bright and shrill to me too. This is my first Marshall amp. Im always using amp modeling effects processors so i figured this would be cool? I do love the amp tho, but it will take lots of tweaking to get a thicker sound from it. Too bad it doesnt have more different amp models in it like the JMP and the Master Volume amps...Im also running this head through a Crate 8 ohm 65 watt 1x12 cabinet so im sure that makes a big difference in it sounding THIN? I just bought the Marshall Code412 cabinet online last night...hopefully that will make the amp sound much fuller.
Had a recent chance to compare Code 50 vs. Katana 50 combos at low and stage volumes in a proper venue. The Katana sounded far better. Was actually suprised how uninspiring the Code sounded.
Most things in that room are right up my street (including the menacing spider!). That "amp", however, is not. I'll stick with my Vyse BlueRock Custom. Keep up the good work! :)
Just stumbled upon this video and it's an old video so probably it doesn't make sence to write a commend, ...anyway... I got myself a cheap as hell (I mean, my Marshall Stockwell bluetooth speaker has cost me more) Code 25 too and at first it was a disappointment. As a Marshall dude you expect "something", it doesn't bear the name "Marshall" for nothing, if you know what I mean... But no, as you said, I was'nt overwelmed either. But....after changing the original 4 ohm speaker for an 8 ohms speaker (Jensen C10r 10"" ) it suddenly came to life, somehow. With your telefoon as your pedalboard, you're almost unlimited. No, i would not go gigging in a club with it, but I think, for the money I've spent, it's real fun to fool around with it in your bedroom or livingroom. For the youngsters with a low budget it's nice to try and taste all the effects, so they can make the step up to a real pedalboard later and I think that's what Marshall is aiming for...
You might have considered to play it through one of the proper Cabs that was designed for it. Otherwise, learning how to do some basic programming rather than tossing the manual on the floor might be a better, or even fair review. I think this amp is way over quite a few too many heads, even while it’s quite basic in terms of editing options. It’s certainly a great option for people who want access to the wide variety of Marshall sounds who don’t have the options multiple amp heads and cabs, and whom appreciate value and programability.
Great video but I love when you play some for your fans. I really love to hear you play for a little. I would buy a ticket but I'm in the States. Maybe some magic next time.
I have this amp and I never use it to do bedroom practice but where it shines is in a band mix I use a a/b box and when it's time for a solo I switch to this amp and it cuts through concrete, that being said if this was the only amp I owned it would then sound best with a hop and skip flung out a second story window for that vintage crunch and sag
It seems like one would have to thoroughly research the manual and spend a good amount of time with it before you can uncover some good tones. By comparison the Boss Katana was instantly wonderful. I hope the Code works out though because it is a beautiful looking little amp.
I have a feeling you'll be able to find some useful and enjoyable tones. I look forward to your final assessment video. Your honesty is refreshing, thanks Dave.
Be carefull with that knife Dave (Pink Floyd 🤣). Agree that if you need a manual the ergonomics (menu's) are crap (Boss...Roland...or is it just me 😂). Stay awesome Dave 🤠
I know this was 6 years ago., but (I believe) the reason why it's a "meh" for you at the end is because of all the other Marshall amps, cabs and combos all around you,.. it really isn't meant for people that have all those Marshall gear who knows each tone or sound that those amps produce with a chord struck on the guitar. my take is, If there's like around 4 or 5 or maybe 6 presets that you really enjoyed with minor tweaking then I'd say it has served its purpose considering the price. the Katana is on 3rd generation now and tbh that's the entire gist of it, you pick 3 or 4 presets and stick and that's it. just stick with it for the next few years innit? 😄
Hey man, cool stuff! I'd love to see your take on Ghost's tone with the CR120 :) I know they use orange amps so it shouldn't be to hard, and it would really sell me on the cr120
Have you tried the Fender Mustang series of amps? (V1 or V2, not GT). I feel like you'd really like it. It has mostly terrible presets as well, but by tweaking it you can get it to sound amazing.
I've read it sounds best with the cab simulators off. It sounded really shrill and harsh on the video like it had really boosted treble. I have heard other demos where it sounded quite pleasing though. I think after a mess around you'll find its good settings.
Hi my friend Dave! Cool video and nice amp! Id like to ask you why do you prefer the Code in head and the Katana in combo, cause Im thinkin in buying a Katana combo, but at the same time Im a little divided between the Katana head. At first, i thought that id be just buying a combo because is not a tube amp, and i personally think that a head must be tube. But i heard so nice things about the Katana. But if id buy the head, id still had to buy the Katana cab, and and would be more expensive than for exemple a Marshall 20w DSL Tube head + a 212 Marshall cab Mx212... Can you give an advice? Thanks! Cheers from Portugal 🍺🤘
what does john frusciante play right before he starts the bedroom lick. In some youtube videos hes playing a very fast funk punk very frusciantesque style... what is it??
the presets are rubbish, but i did some good sound from mine... sim amps are very well, however the hdfx just sounded like a marshall...which is why a fellow buys a marshall
Good stuff ...for 20 mins you made huge improvement to 20 patches...think you should refine a few and share (sell!) online ... first video ever to give constructive criticism and an option resolve/fix on the fly - hope Marshall see this would be well worth getting few guitarist including yourself to work on their out off the box tones as the most of them are awful - well done you
Hey Dave, hope all is well buddy ❤️... So yea, I was wondering, have you tried an esp and what do you think of them¿¿¿ One of my heros is kirk hammett, so yea ... I've always wanted an esp. I recently had a chance to get one but I couldn't find what I wanted. So yea, I got a jackson ...I'm not sure what model lol, sorry ... But yea, ... 👍👍👍
Facts: 1. Digital Amps are Bright Amps 2. Fender Strats are Bright Guitars. Compliments: 1. You play great, dynamic Guitar 2. You are a Genu-Wine Goof-Ball !
Are those presets editable? if so time to give the push to those you dont like. I did the same when I got both of my mustangs. Likely can get sound you want if you can change them all around. Once that's done it doesn't take any more work than any other amp most of the time. Trick is to set them in advance then just go with whatever 1 you want that day.
Thats a drag, on my mustang 2 it can be a pain on somethings since I hafta use the computer for some of it via usb. My mustang 5 is easier since its all on the front panel. Luckily for me at least I only hafta do them once. Is it 1 of those situations where they have too many things combined together or just really hard to find?
And, that is precisely why I hate amps of that ilk. All of that frickin' fiddling around just to get a decent sound going. It's just annoying as hell and saps my desire to play once I am done screwing with everything. That's why I ditched the two modeling amps that I had ages ago. Gimmie a classic solid state amp and I'm good.
My friend got similar digital Marshall combo amp,but do you got a reviev or some video of that Peavey amp, that is standing behind you in the beggining of the video...Cheers
I have a Code 50 combo and really don't like it. I tried a 100watt head in the store and it has the same problem. I prefer clean/cleanish sounds, maybe some crunch but even with clean sound it makes some kind of weird growler sound. For example: set a clean sound, play some power chords and listen that weird sound. It is easy to hear. It's vibrating somehow. It can be heard even with low gain and low volume. Complete disappointment for me.
Dave! Try these settings out and see what you think, ive tried to emulate John’s tone and i feel that im pretty close. I have the output fairly high on my Dyna Comp so my amp gain is low - 03 Purple Plexi - 1.1 gain - 8.6 bass -6.6 mid - 3.0 treble Power- vintage marshall 30w -5.8 presence and 2.7 resonance -1960x cab -overdrive with 0.2 drive, 8.6 tone and 2.1 level All that with a slight spring reverb
I'm sure I have tried that and even less mid and treble. But I will again. I tried to get them to take it back. They stand behind everything so well. But no my fault.
I think the Katana beats it hands down to be honest from what I can hear. I think Shane from “in the blues” sent his code back after getting the katana. Or was it the guitar geek, or did I image it all?
hmmm . .could the amp sim be set up for direct out cab sim sound .and your playing through a guitar speaker etc...does sound really harsh and orrible on some presets..grat vid ...rock on ...peace.
Can I use the Marshall code 4 by 12 cabinet with a tube amp. I bought the code 100 head and cab. Hate the head if I can use the cab with other heads it won't be a total lose.
I hated my Marshall Code 50 combo computer amp And no Wow in me either , Marshall must’ve been high to design a amp like the code and then market it as a simple Marshall amp to use for beginners - lol with Bluetooth that was a freaking headache 🤕 to work with 😡. Was able to get to the tones and thought they weren’t too bad myself, now I would rather have Marshall tubes sounded off rather than computer chips sound off.. I dump it after several months of use b4 I would’ve lost my mind totally ( my playing time was nonexistent about - grr) ... and then I went out and bought a new cheap tube amp with dials Instead of push buttons computer bull shit .. My gear is now a 20watt tube amp with 2 - 1x12s 80watt speaker cabs on each end of my living room and been happier ever since my deletion of that code combo . ***Dialed , tubes amps is way to go - not computer program amps without tubes ***
Meh. I would just avoid the damn thing. But, I fucking hate those types of amps anyway. So, to say that I have a bias against them would be a massive understatement.
you should have bought the Boss katana Head....so much better sounding.///this sounds so boxy....terrible...I'm sorry but you messed up// get the katana 100 watt head...I have it it's the best of the modeling amps....
Dave, I think you need to work with that amp a bit. It really doesn't sound nearly as good as your other amps and we know it's not you. I'm thinking this amp's a dud. Great playing as always.
It's the presets! Yeah, always hear that excuse with these things. Went though it all with the Fender Mustang tuck ages to get it sounding good, never again...life is too short.
SO glad i didn't get one; if it sounds this bad with Dave playing...i think i'll stick to my valvestate 65R; minus a dozen thin screechy mixed-up effects. That Blues patch nearly made me fall of my seat laughing...Auto whah WTF?! I think marshall should ask for their money back from SoftTube inc. This is the worst marshall i've ever heard;except the silly desktop toys.Move over marshall BOSS are coming through...
Happy Birthday too you, Happy Birthday too you ! Happy Birthday dear Awesome Guitarist youtube dude! Happy Birthday too you !!! ( cue ugly kid joe, everything about you...ending/outro )
For good old rock n roll, from Zep to Purple, Hendrix to Deftones, Muse to Jane's Addiction, Judas Priest, Slayer and all heavy guitar driven bands the Marshall sounds way more authentic then the Katana. The Katana has the fakest most digital sounding overdrive and distortion modeller ever. Just rubbish for playing the bands and style listed above. The Marshall has issues, but is way way more authentic sounding for heavy rock then the Kantana is. I've found the Katana to be downright annoying in it's heavyr overdrive sounds
Well Dave, when you reviewed the Boss Katana 50 you expected something amazing and that's what you got it and it came across. So thanks for being honest about the Marshall CODE, it's rare thing for TH-cam reviewers and it's much appreciated.

i haven't touched my code in almost 2 years since getting the katana head :)
regardless of my opinion, still love your videos mate

Dave is one of the most real people I’ve ever saw on video, so many fake people these days
Great honest review , My Orange Crush Pro still keeps me Happy - Dont want anything else .

Dave this video had me laughing...love your reactions to the presets! Thanks for the entertainment!
thanks for being honest about this so called amp.
As always, your playing and honesty are spot on...the amp...not a fan to be honest.
Course, gave you the thumbs up all the same, cause you rock my friend.
I've unfortunately found that, with digital amps, the hi end fizz is ubiquitous. Thanks for doing the review.
Just unpacked the Code 100 combo amp, and it really is quite remarkable. awesome Dave blasting that cowboys from hell riff in the metal preset haha, and cemetery gates too, cheers man!
Never heard anyone make this amp sound good. If you fail you'll be in good company :)
Also I had Joanne Shaw Taylor like one of my short Instagram posts with the Orange Amp being used.
ah the ol zoom 505...many a happy hour back in the day :)
Great video as always Dave, hope you have the endurance to coax some tones out of this. £250........so many better/cheaper options specially to just use at home (software for one) that switch lag is a killer my Fender Mustang does it as well between patches but not for individual pedals sims thankfully.

HEY DAVE! wow when you compare this first impressions to the boss katana it is like night and day with the katana it took you just a few minutes to find both clean and over driven tones you really liked.
Would be interesting comparing this against the Boss Katana head, with both of them using the same cab.
Try it with the cabinet simulation turned off and see if it produces any better tones.
Dave finally gettind around to trying the modern non-tube side of things. Great going Dave!
Modeling I mean, I know the crush isn't that old.
Those "plexis" behind him are repacked solid state amps. He just makes them sound like the real deal. Actually, he compared them to a tube head once and in my opinion he sounded a bit better on his usual solid state gear.
I wonder what it would be like clean but with a decent dirty pedal in front of it. I've yet to see a video where any code sounded good.
ya, i just bought this amp head this week. It does sound way too bright and shrill to me too. This is my first Marshall amp. Love the bit where you threw the manual away. V funny :o)
Really nice sound!!! 9:37 Jeff Buckley best tone
LOL! "The first cut is the deepest!", you're hilarious, dude.
Had a recent chance to compare Code 50 vs. Katana 50 combos at low and stage volumes in a proper venue. The Katana sounded far better. Was actually suprised how uninspiring the Code sounded.
Damn it, the part when you go from so called “70s blues” to “dirty blues” patch is one of the funniest things in the world :D
Most things in that room are right up my street (including the menacing spider!). That "amp", however, is not. I'll stick with my Vyse BlueRock Custom. Keep up the good work! :)

The setting around 15:15 sounded about the best
It seems like one would have to thoroughly research the manual and spend a good amount of time with it before you can uncover some good tones. By comparison the Boss Katana was instantly wonderful. I hope the Code works out though because it is a beautiful looking little amp.
I agree but sadly the manual for the code consists of one side of A4 paper that tells you basically nothing. :(
I have a feeling you'll be able to find some useful and enjoyable tones.
Great playing Dave love u r vids but I think you should have gone with a katana 100 watt head it seriously ROCKS .
I figured out what the code is. It says this amp sucks!

i have a code 50 combo. the presets are *dog shite* but if you fiddle around a bit you can get a really good sound for a very cheap price.

Marshall First Act Limited Edition!
FINALLY!!!
Just got the code50. Wish I would of gotten the 100. It’s the same price!
Bought one and sold it within a week. Hated everything about it.
I'm curious about Marshall's Origin series. They're somewhat affordable compared to other Marshall tube amps.
I picked up a 20H a year ago. It's a great pedal platform.
Great amp!!!!!
Hi my friend Dave!
Cool video and nice amp!
Id like to ask you why do you prefer the Code in head and the Katana in combo, cause Im thinkin in buying a Katana combo, but at the same time Im a little divided between the Katana head.

The presets give me some harsh Line 6 Spider vibes. I would be very interested to see if you can get some decent tones out of this one, Dave.
What is better for old school 70' 80's metal?
Marshall code or boss Katana?
Katana. :)
Facts:
1. Digital Amps are Bright Amps
2. Fender Strats are Bright Guitars.
Compliments:
1. You play great, dynamic Guitar
2. You are a Genu-Wine Goof-Ball !
Not sure why you want all the presets, 4 or 5 is all you need as your ear and abilities out weigh the code
Similar concept to the Line 6 Spider Mk IV.

Thank you for watching and its a 2002 Fender mexico 60s reissue strat. : )

Dave! Try these settings out and see what you think, ive tried to emulate John’s tone and i feel that im pretty close. I have the output fairly high on my Dyna Comp so my amp gain is low
- 03 Purple Plexi
- 1.1 gain
- 8.6 bass
-6.6 mid
- 3.0 treble
Power- vintage marshall 30w
-5.8 presence and 2.7 resonance
-1960x cab
-overdrive with 0.2 drive, 8.6 tone and 2.1 level
All that with a slight spring reverb
Saved don't know yet, neighbors home.
I'm sure I have tried that and even less mid and treble. But I will again. I tried to get them to take it back. They stand behind everything so well. But no my fault.
Wondering if they updated the firmware to reduce all that treble
I think the Katana beats it hands down to be honest from what I can hear. I think Shane from “in the blues” sent his code back after getting the katana. Or was it the guitar geek, or did I image it all?
Question Mr Dave.
Does turning off bass middle top create a "flat" response?
In my opinion no it does;t but I'm sure some people would say it does. : )
Banjo, banjo, banjo !
When are you going to do a video showing us the Tiesco guitar?
Monday. : )
I have the 100h and it seems the cab effect ruins it. Sounds much better with it off.
I really need to retry this amp. : )
@@thedavesimpson not sure why that get bad reviews? I spent a weekend dialing in 8 presets. Love this amp👍
@@thedavesimpson Definitely;)
hmmm . .could the amp sim be set up for direct out cab sim sound .and your playing through a guitar speaker etc...does sound really harsh and orrible on some presets..grat vid ...rock on ...peace.
What's that marshal combo in the background by the door
Its a Marshall Master Reverb 30. : )
Good luck with that amp, looks a bit too technical for my taste, but am sure
You will sort out those patches.....Cheers Dave
Len is a weird dog
yes I really dig your videos...sorry about the amp.///
Have you tried out a Yamaha THR10C ?
Not yet no. I would love to though. Hopefully one day. : )
Dave Simpson i think they sound great.
hmmm. Sounds like squier. Thin with no character. Probably due to the lack of mids. Have you tried it with the lemon drop or a Gibson?
I have tried it with the lemon drop and it did sound better. Just made me realise that most of the presets were probably made with hum bucker guitars.
what song is 21:23
I just made it up. : )
Is the Marshall combo behind u from the 80 a lead or reverb 12?
Shaun Zimmerman I think it's just an mg combo.
Its a Master Reverb 30. : )
Can I use the Marshall code 4 by 12 cabinet with a tube amp. I bought the code 100 head and cab. Hate the head if I can use the cab with other heads it won't be a total lose.
You can indeed use the cab with another amp as long its compatible with ohms and wattage. : )
Dave Simpson thanks now I have to figure a good amp match for the code 4x12 cab. Any suggestions please.
It's a shame about those presets
Got nothing on the katana
Do you see the $2,500 heads under the amp. He doesn't need a Katana
Did you crack the code?
I think but I never want to have to do it again. : )
Use the Code with your original CAB, the CAB made for CODE. Real cabs, like 1x12, 2x12, 4x12 with v30 for exemple, don't look cool.
Quite disappointing, have you tried out an Origin?
Not yet no. There bit out of my price range. Maybe one day. : )
Dave Simpson Maybe if someone from this community has one and is prepared to lend it for a few days.
17:06 haha
Dave, I think you need to work with that amp a bit. It really doesn't sound nearly as good as your other amps and we know it's not you. I'm thinking this amp's a dud. Great playing as always.
It's the presets! Yeah, always hear that excuse with these things. Went though it all with the Fender Mustang tuck ages to get it sounding good, never again...life is too short.
Hmm not diggin' it Dave... A/B with Katana head ;-)
You have to spend a lot of time to understand how the code series work
For good old rock n roll, from Zep to Purple, Hendrix to Deftones, Muse to Jane's Addiction, Judas Priest, Slayer and all heavy guitar driven bands the Marshall sounds way more authentic then the Katana.
Digital and harsh IMO
